This is why as an “upper intermediate” rider, I only do really tiny jumps. 1 out 5 of my jumps I’m accidentally in the wrong body position, or compressed my suspension too soon or too late, or slip off the pedals, etc.. on a small jump those mistakes are scary but manageable, on a bigger jumps it can end you for the season. Kudos to the dudes that nail it 5/5 times, but as a 4/5 times dude… forget it. Not worth it

I've ridden bmx bikes my whole life but when I got a mtb it felt awkward wierd and front heavy and if I wasn't in the exact right position I'd eat shit kind of like you are saying. Since then I've added riser bars and changed the stack height and I've also messed with the suspension and now it jumps really well without wanting to buck the rear end all the time.

sheesh, i’ve had that feeling like any mtb has too… When popping off of a jump, make sure you don’t just piggy hop your way through but actually a proper front to back bunny hop, that’ll help you from landing nosy on jumps. Check out the first season of How to bike from Pinkbike, it’s great to learn jumps too.
@janataman9196Ай бұрын
On this footage it´s obvious that you´re tending to land after a jump nose-heavy. I think this happens because of a slightly wrong body movement in front of the jump. Most of the time you got away with it, but on the last jump there was a lack of speed, too, so you cased it. But falling down is part of the game, and I´m glad to hear that nothing´s broken mate. :)

@charliesrandomthings5457Ай бұрын
hey man- it doesn't look like your fork and shock are responding as they need to, you should probably open the comp, lower pressure to a 30% sag when you get on the bike, and set rebound accordingly

@petedog9581Ай бұрын
You were pinned and riding great... and then one miscalculation. Glad you walked away bc you guys were rippin fast. When the front wheel starts to dive, lightly squeeze the back break in the air and the drag will help to drop the back wheel and get you level for the landing. That was a big gap.
@JS-cg6trАй бұрын
Is that right? In motocross you brake tap mid air to bring the rear tire up (when you are nose high)
@petedog9581Ай бұрын
@@JS-cg6tr You must squeeze the front brake to do that. It is physics. A faster spinning wheel has less drag than a slower spinning wheel. Drag will drop whichever wheel on anything.
@jpmohr930118 күн бұрын
@@JS-cg6tr As someone who rear brake taps frequently, you are correct. Rear brake tap in mid-air makes you slightly nose-heavy, and the front brake makes you really nose heavy, both at once sends you nose down very aggressively. It's basic physics, the energy from the forward rotation of the wheel is transferred to your overall flight trajectory when you brake with either wheel... squeezing your back break when you're nose heavy is a great way to paralyze yourself, @petedog9581 has no idea what he's talking about
@JS-cg6tr17 күн бұрын
@@jpmohr9301 I was fairly sure but I didn’t have any first hand knowledge as it pertains to mtb. Thanks for confirming!
@avlehtine17 күн бұрын
@@petedog9581 Dude, that is straight up dangerous advice. Using the front brake in the air is a big no-no. Losing the gyro force will very easily throw you off, not to mention the squirrely landing when the front wheel has to get back up to speed. There is also zero chance that any change in drag will outweigh the transfer of angular momentum from the rear wheel to the frame (and you) and bring the rear down. Anyway, with bicycles and the relatively light (compared to frame and rider) wheels and tires, using the rear brake does very little, you may be screwed if you screw up the takeoff.
@Tristin-hp8ow16 күн бұрын
I really think you need to spend some time working on bike control. It seems you end up nose heavy off all the jumps where you really need to stay level in the air to be comfy. I would try riding a smaller bike like a dirt jumper or BMX and that really helped me learn. Manuals, bunny hops, and leaning to bunny hop/pull off of tight steep lips helped me feel super comfy in the air. When you stay level in the air, even if you case or get sideways, it is almost always better than coming in nose heavy. I had a t-8 compression fracture in my spine from staying too back heavy off the lip which caused me to go nose heavy off the jump. I realized only after a long break from riding that I always jumped like this. I would preload the rear suspension too hard and always get kicked foward a little even if I was clearing the jumps fine and always landing fine too. But once I was traumatized by the spinal injury I realized just how much I was doing this and now I feel super comfy on the bike. Hitting a jump should FEEL no different from a massive assisted bunny hop. I think that ideally you should not be rotating forward as you travel through the air. One way I got rid of that habit was just by practicing really strict and level bunny hops on flat ground. Idk I said a whole lot of gibberish and none of this prolly makes much sense but I know just how terrifying a bad crash like that can be as I had one myself and I do not want that to happen to anyone else if I can prevent it😂

Beginner type of skills ,combined with a big squishy bike, results in riders convincing themselves that they know how to ride, when by any serious measure, they do not. Learn to hop, well. That will build the skill, muscle and reflexes to be able to make a fast correction to get the front end back up where it should be while in the air, when you find yourself in an endo position. And, remember, with a hardtail, bucking is far less common. In skating, you aren’t a skater unless you can ollie and in MTB and BMX, you aren’t a real rider unless you can hop. It’s the basis of nearly everything, beyond beginner-level riding. Anyway, respect for taking a scary wreck. Salute! 👍
