Crashed my new motorcycle on the PanAmerican Highway

I finally conquered the backroad up to Laguna Mojanda on my new Honda Xr190L. The ride up was super difficult so I decided to take the east main road back home. Big mistake. On a twisty stretch of the PanAmerican Highway I hit a patch of sand and gravel, slid out of control, and hit the guardrails. I was thrown from the bike and landed in in the rocks. I’m mostly ok and so is the bike. I don’t know how I didn’t die. Just lucky I guess.

Fairly new rider here. Went down on my vstrom 3 months ago. I got up and tried to pick up my bike which slid 60 yards down the street. lol Luckily it was super late and nobody was out. Broke my collarbone and fractured ankle. Collarbone needed surgery. Just now able to run again on the ankle. Im a traveling contract guy like you. Most people thought I would sell the bike but it brought me so much joy from exploring. Plan on riding again when I get back to Texas, just maybe not at night time. Glad you lucked out.

Man, I’m hearing a lot of stories about broken collarbones and bikes. Good to hear you didn’t give up on something that brings you joy. I’ve been trying to explain this to my wife as I refuse to comply with her ultimatum that I sell the bike.

Ouch. I don’t know what a scapula is but breaking it sounds pretty terrible. Yeah, I got really lucky in this crash. I’d love to have a horse, and maybe one day I will, but I need more land to keep one first.

I’m already back in the saddle. Slowly rode the bike into town to buy lunch and groceries. I can’t quite manage to use the foot brake yet so I have to take it really easy coming down the steep dirt roads with only front brakes. I expect to be back to normal in a week or two.

Thanks, I’m pretty happy to see that I’m alive too. My moment of bad luck shouldn’t scare you off that road. It was just an unfortunate combination of me being very out of practice on a motorcycle and the road having a bunch of sand on a sharp curve.

I am glad you are okay. I had a similar experience down on the coast here in Manta few months ago where I wrecked my motorcycle after having a blowout on the highway. I was also Super Lucky and only ended up with a broken collarbone and a metal plate. Be safe!
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 9 ай бұрын
A broken collarbone doesn’t sound all that lucky, but I suppose any motorcycle crash you survive is a win. About 30 years ago I was riding an old Honda CB 600 with a sidecar on I-5 south of Seattle. Sidecar tire blew out and send me out of control swerving back and forth in heavy traffic. Blowouts on a bike at high speed are terrifying.

Glad you were able walk away from that one. I used to ride but sold my harley 48 sportster, just too dangerous in south florida really. I think the most scary is watching youtube videos and seeing something called a "death wobble " omg , so freaking scary lol !
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, I’ve seen some of those death wobble videos. My old Hilux had what I called a death wobble that no mechanic was able to solve. I kept finding motorcycle death wobble videos when I searched for information about it. I thought it was just annoying rather than dangerous until the axle came off on a mountain pass. Despite the dangers, riding around Florida has to have been a blast. Ever considered getting something more modern and nimble to ride?

@FallofftheMap well I have a bit of news here, the reason I followed your channel is because me and the wife are retiring to Ecuador, next month. We will be living in the Manglaralto area. If I did get another bike over here in Ecaudor , it could be an enduro, well I guess now days they call it a multi sport.

@FallofftheMap we will be renting house for a while in Montanita, but a more quiet part of the town in a neighborhood called El Tegrillo. I like Olon as well. I like the whole area, Manglaralto, Montanita. Olon. We had already done our exploratory trip a few months ago. We went from Ayangue to puerto Cayo back then. So hope to settle for good here in a few weeks. My wife is originally from Colombia and is fluent in both languages. @@industrial_prostitute thanks. I’m hoping today is the worst of it. I don’t think it’s actually road rash. I didn’t slide at all. The bruises and scrapes are from the impact with the guard rail and the impact when I landed in the rocks.

I hope you heal up fast man! I’m curious to ask, does the recent violence in Ecuador worry you?
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 9 ай бұрын
Thanks. Yes, the recent spike in violence does worry me a little. While to real risks to people that are not directly involved with the gangs is exaggerated by the media, there is also an increased risk of violent crime targeting people no involved in the gang wars, specifically muggings, car jacking, and home invasions that have increased in frequency and level of violence used. I am more hesitant to travel to certain parts of the coast, go out at night, or visit certain parts of the city now, so it has altered my behavior a little bit. I don’t think this is the new normal for Ecuador. The people are furious with the situation and it’s very likely Ecuador will eventually follow a path similar to El Salvador and the Philippines and adopt an extreme tough on crime solution that “solves” the problem but creates an entirely new set of problems in the form of human rights abuses. All that said, I’m still happier and more at peace here than in the US.
