This is at Oshkosh. He's been given the instructions to land "on the orange dot" (which you can see reflected on the underside of the wings... Which just means this pilot's under a lot of stress; he doesn't have "the whole runway" and if he does the Go-Around, he has to go back to the beginning of the "Fisk Arrival" and do the whole approach again.

As a pilot who learned in tricycle geared planes and then got a tail wheel endorsement, I concur with "fly the airplane all the way to the hangar." Twice, I went about as far around in a ground loop as you can go without actually going around. Didn't drag a wing or do any damage but it was embarrassing. It’s a 180. Keep full flaps and trim it forward. Should never have been trying to 3 point in wind like that. Carry lots of power in to touchdown and stick it on left main with lots of Aileron input needed to keep that wing down. Do not dump the flaps on that airplane until you are completely slowed. The left turning tendency from dumping them aggressively can catch you off guard. Don’t be afraid to pin it hard on touchdown. Commit to the landing or commit to the go around. This guy committed to nothing and in that airplane it will bite you hard if you don’t commit

No flaps ..wheel landing is the answer. No crabbing. Dip that wing into the wind . Use rudder to keep noise on center line. Increase approach speech and cram the wheel onto the ground on side of crossing and build it there More like a carrier landing. Hold that yolk all the way forward and aleron into wind until other wheel settles in runway. Then tailwheel settles down. Keep flying the plane to tie down .

The guy in the video is using so little rudder you can’t see it move when it should be at the stops in a “30kt” direct crosswind. That’s why he ground looped by the way, no rudder use. The windsock was straight out as morning wood so I doubt the 70°-90° x-wnd factor. He'd be all over the grounds like Benny Hill given the small amount of control surface movements I could make out. The plane never fully quit flying till it ground looped(nice plane - ouch). I say that because the tailwheel is barely touching the ground and then it was lifted, bounced twice off of the ground either due to brakes or, down elevator being applied instead of up elevator, then he totally forgot about left aileron and there goes the right wingtip and possibly even more expensive damage to the right wheel rim and pant; behind the airplane all the way. He had it on the mains all he needed to do was get the tail up to press them into the runway and roll in left aileron till you can't hold the tail up any longer. When the wind is this strong you need to be constantly aware of the wind's direction to you and move the controls as needed even when taxiing, right to tiedown. Tricycle gear aren't totally immune either when the wind is blowing hard and gusty.

It’s a tail dragger….those that haven’t flown a tail dragger need not comment because you don’t know what you’re talking about. A tricycle gear airplane is inherently stable and easy to land. But a landing in a taildragger requires a lot of practice to perfect. In a Taildragger the C of G is behind the main wheels making it inherently unstable directionally. In any type of left/right nose movement on the ground the tail wants to overtake the nose. The airplane wants to ground loop, the only thing stopping it is the pilot. Once a directional swing starts it will continue unless aggressively arrested with opposite rudder. In this landing as soon as the nose began to swing the pilot needed to stop it by aggressively applying opposite rudder to stop the swing, immediately followed by an aggressive but smooth application of rudder back in the other direction to stabilize. When taking off or landing a tail dragger in gusty conditions the rudders never stop moving.

400 comments and half about flaps. It isn't about the flaps, it's about letting the wing come back up and directional control.

That could happen to anyone … but 27 knots probably exceeds the cross wind component for that AC.

In that scenario. And the crosswind component. I would’ve picked another airport.

My sons flight school had this happen to one of their airplanes on a first solo. Totaled the airplane. It got the landing gear torn off and a lot more damage when it slid off the runway. My son is bothered by it because it was their best 172 which he liked to fly.

in the tailwheels there are two types of people, there are those to whom it has already happened and your those to whom it will happen

This was at Oshkosh where you keep it airborne down the runway till you get to your colored dot. Pretty sure he was intentionally floating it till he got to that red dot.

He should have known his aircraft’s crosswind component rating

Problem was not so much the wind it was the flaps. And if you noticed not much rudder control going there…. Sad. Damaged a nice C-180

Trade it in for a 182 with "Land-O-Matic" tricycle gear.

He was told by the tower to land on the orange circle, looked pretty good with everything going on. It’s done a lot coming in to Oshkosh.

Needs rudder training. Bank into the wind. Do a wheel landing. Forward wheel to keep weight on the mains.

Mike Patey's Draco lost on takeoff to high crosswinds, but he did have some curved wingtip levers that may of aided in this crafts fate.

My all time favorite crosswind landing (attempt) was the Lufthansa wing strike from several years ago. If you haven't seen it it's worth a look (KZfaq). The crew did some amazing flying on that landing.

I never use an aircraft when i fly. My arms are just fine. Crosswinds are a problem for me at times but usually never.
