Inspector Gadget works because it strikes the perfect balance of taking itself seriously while also being a wonderfully comedic farce. It's too easy to swing one way or the other when writing. People lean into extremes, making a complete joke that has such little substance there's nothing to care about, or something so deep and serious that there's no room for joy and optimism to fit in. The contrast of confidence and (in)competance in the good inspector make for something genuinely endearing, in both the cartoon and it's star.

Even the first movie is similar to RoboCop 1 with a cop dying but is brought to life as a robot to protect the crime before he stumbles into the case involving the main villain responsible for turning him into a machine. I think the wildest thing about the entire Inspector Gadget franchise is that it's sort of a spin off of Lupin III. Way I heard it, DIC wanted to do a Lupin VII series set in the future, and there was going to be a cybernetic Zenigata to chase Lupin's descendent. That show was scrapped, but they kept cyber-Zenigata and made Gadget.

@@BMask Inspector Gadget the original cartoon from the 80s actually had a soundtrack LP later CD in 1995 made in Australia which is not an easy find but I have it! And some trivia for you in regards to the cartoon. In the original pilot Gadget had a mustache but it was removed due to him looking too similar to Inspector Clouseau. Also Inspector Gadget was orignally voiced by Gary Owens and Jesse White and yes Frank Welker before finally settling for Don Adams for the series. Also in the original pilot Brain and Gadgets roles were reversed. Meaning Gadget was smart and had more wits and Brain was the one messing things up LOL! This would change after the pilot. Penny was voiced by Mona M. Lanotti and would be replaced by Cree Summer for season 1. 🕵🔍🐕👱‍♀📕

I think the most frustrating part about it how good this film is that they actually made the BEST modern version of the inspector gadget theme song… but not only did they not use it for the film, but they split it up into 2 parts. One part of it was used for the teaser trailer they made for the film, and the second was for only the dvd menu itself. People have managed to create fanmade full versions of the song by stitching the audio clips together but the songs ending isn’t fully done… so it’s a huge shame that objectively the best version of the inspector gadget theme song will never be fully complete.😭

You gotta remember that when Gadget 1 came out, most of us were unaware of the original cartoon and simply became attached to Broderick's rendition of the character, so it makes sense why the second film wasn't received as well due to how different it was to the first one.
@BMask
@BMask 2 ай бұрын
I think this is a very centralised sense of revisionism. When the first movie came out, it was ripped apart by critics and written off by quite a lot of older kids who'd grown up on the cartoon. The second was badly received not in any way, shape or form by an audience who wanted something more like the original movie- the changes got their praise, it was just seen as another crappy cash grab on home video. As stated, I feel it at least makes an attempt to be a little more than that- enough to elevate it from just a cash grab to a statement from someone who wanted to prove the original show's content was worth putting out there properly- but it was in no way hampered by anyone's 'devotion' to a movie that landed like a thud in 1999. Please enjoy the og movie if you do, sure, but don't try to gaslight me into thinking that first film built a massive majority of fans that caused G2's hampered reception. Hundreds of comments here stating the opposite, and letterboxd/RT score and IDMB scores don't remember the first film that way, either.

Fun fact: Sigrid Thornton, the actress who played the mayor in the sequel, did actually go on to play Judy Garland in the miniseries Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door. Wouldn't be surprised if the producers saw IG2 and thought "That's our Judy!"

I remember watching this film randomly on holiday when I was pretty young. The bubblegum truck scene at the end stuck with me for years. After Doug did his NC review of the first it reignited my curiosity about this movie. I remember re-watching it and feeling it was much more faithful to the original show, plus a fun movie in general!

Oh man talk about a blast from the past. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gadget movies, the first because it’s actually filmed in downtown Pittsburgh and every time I got to eat near there I say “Hey, that’s where Claw’s hideout is!”(and also because it still has to this day the best Happy Meal toy). The second I had on DVD and would watch it constantly due to all the special features and games on it.

I remember not caring for either of the films as a child, but the one thing I do remember enjoying was the joke in the second film where the Inspector goes undercover at the bar and, in order to convince them he's a tough guy who fits in there, orders a glass of milk-chocolate milk. That got me and still makes me smile years later, admittedly.

Honestly I loved Inspector Gadget 1. Simple origin story, found it hilarious, loved the Evil Inspector and the Spider in his body, etc. but 2 is great as well. I'm just shocked this is how I find out most people apparently don't remember 1.

I KNEW Soundwave's voice sounded familiar in the Live Action Transformers films. Yes I know it was Frank Welker at the time, but I heard that voice somewhere else in media, but couldn't put finger on it. Now I know. It was Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget. Dr. Claw's voice in that role was iconic.

I'm sure someone else has said it, but I'm not scrolling though the comments to find it right now. The Mask was a great movie but no one I know actually knew it was a comic adaption and not and original script until something like 10 to 15 years later. Unlike more than a few modern movies, it was well written, acted and directed. If you didn't know about the original source, you would have nothing to complain about. Having missed the original gadget movie and not knowing there there was a sequel, I appreciate this video. Also your description of the execs and creatives at about 3:29 was great.

Its funny I remember enjoying this movie as a kid, despite the fact even as a kid I never actually liked Inspector Gadget. While I get thats part of the joke, Gadget's absolute cluelessness would always venture into grating halfway through any episode of any ver. of the show. Even as a kid my disbelief of everyone buying into Gadget taking all the credit was paper thin. The first movie tried to address this but in the worst way possible by making him not feel like the character at all. But this movie I feel found a great balance. Gadget is a clueless idiot like usual but still has him being there when the chips are down and actually engage with the crisis rather than stay filly oblivious to it. It makes me root for him even more. Also agreed 100%. Give me a reboot with G2 and itd be a thousand times better than any of the weird gimmicks they tried in other show. Itd definitelly turn the cast into the perfect dynamic: Gadget is the clumsy oaf with charisma but barely understanding whats going on. Penny the smart one having to steer things along And G2 the more competent one but having zero social skills and can be as naive as gadget to the point of comedic fright The comedy writes itself
