Lucas did actually say in an interview after Episode one that he got frustrated that no one would tell him when he had a bad idea. Everyone was basically bowing down to him, & telling him that everything he did was gold. 'Yes George, it's wonderful George, you can do no wrong George' etc. He said that afterwards he was asking people 'why didn't you tell me that was a bad idea, why didn't you tell me we shouldn't do that, why didn't you give any input?'.

@ge2719

Denni Bryant because with the original movie he was a unimportant director who hadn't done anything that was a success, so he was essentially going to other people to try and get them to help fix the latest movie he had made that no one wanted to put out and so they told him what he needed to do or just out right re edited the movie for him. but with the prequels everyone was someone who was hired, and he was the boss, so just do what the boss says. If he wanted people who were able to be honest with him then he should have hired people that could do that.

While I have not seen this interview I have to agree that possibly thinking bad of Jesus' sacrifice for us while portraying that sacrifice while also getting struck by lightning would be a major wake-up call for me too. Assuming I survived the encounter I would be thinking if I was not already a catholic and firm believer in God, that I better start believing in a deity who basically gave me the most surreal warning shot in existence. All them people who try to save their backsides by saying something along the lines of "If I am lying may God strike me down." Only to not see any lightning best not test the creator. He knows all, sees all, and is capable of taking such precise aim that hitting someone with a deadly object would not kill them.
@teethgrinder83
@teethgrinder83 7 жыл бұрын
Tony Cast so despite him being up high on something wooden in a country where lightening storms are common, rather than think "wow I should have guessed there would be a higher chance of getting struck by lightning" you would instead attribute it to a supposedly omnipresent and omnipotent being who only seems to reveal himself in arbitrary ways and who is meant to love us yet consistently takes his anger out on us and who also is meant to be superior to us in every way yet is vengeful and petty. That's interesting-sometimes I despair of humans, it's no surprise that the next logical step to some is to blow themselves up for the same invisible being because they feel their path to him is correct. I hope one day we all see sense

The famous (and infamous) French Connection chase scene that blew everyone away in 1971 was essentially guerilla filmmaking. The production company didn't go through any red tape to get the proper permits, in fact no one in the film's production company even attempted to get formal permission from the city to shoot it, cuz essentially they knew the answer would be "are you kidding me? no." So they decided to ask for forgiveness later than permission ahead of time. Besides, they knew some of the cops in the area, who had been involved in the case upon which the film was loosely based, so they just shook a few hands and paid for a few beers and that was it. The stunt coordinators didn't rehearse it down to every minute detail like they would today, and the area was not cordoned off. Nobody who lived there was informed ahead of time (except for some local cops). Assistants to the director "cleared traffic" for five blocks in either direction, and they had some off-duty cops help them in an unofficial capacity by controlling the traffic lights in a few places, but if someone tried to do this today it'd be a lawsuit waiting to happen, and half the film crew would probably end up in jail, oh and a few cops would probably lose their badges. And here's the kicker: Gene Hackman himself did most of the driving of his character's vehicle in the chase! Insurance? What's dat?! They had a stunt guy do the really nasty tricky parts, but that's mostly Hackman himself being a badass. All that risk-taking life-threatening craziness for just five minutes of screen time, but it's an amazing five minutes. Sure beats the car chase scene in the Joe Don Baker movie Mitchell which came out a few years later, complete with intense merging into traffic and exciting use of the right turn signal. Or was it the left? I don't recall. It was so breathtaking. I had a cow. Moo.

In the low budget horror flick "Basket Case", there's a scene where a hotel manager is counting money. That money was literally the entire budget for the film. The entire reason why that scene was shot first was because they had to pay the film license fees to shoot in that area and wouldn't have it later. The speech at the end of "Blade Runner" was entirely improvised. (Tears in the rain) The actor completely forgot his line when the cameras were rolling, assumed it was a garbage take, and just said whatever came to mind. Afterword, the director decided that it was the most profound thing that character could say and decided to not film the actual line. In "Highlander: Endgame", Bruce Payne delivers the line "What's wrong MacLeod? Don't you want to be inside me?" Referring to his energy being absorbed after MacCleod's death. On the first take Adrian Paul, who didn't realize he was in the shot, mouthed "Wow..." and walked out of frame with wide eyes shaking his head. That's all I can remember off the top of my head.

4:41: "In 1977....where he spends most of his time being mad at how much input other people have." He wasn’t talking about “other people” in general; he was talking about studio executives. While it’s true that Lucas had come to dismiss the idea of considering input by all other people in general by the time he made the prequels, that’s not what he was talking about in 1977. He was talking about businessmen making creative decisions that harmed an auteur’s vision, and back then at least, he was right. He may have gone on to be a hypocrite in this sense, but he was still right, since studio interference that results in poor decisions made from a storytelling point of view is still an ongoing practice in the industry.

One of my favorite stories about behind-the-scenes stories involved Bill Murray learning to be Hunter Thompson for "Where The Buffalo Roam" by pretty much living with the real Hunter Thompson. The two would try to one-up each other with dares, pranks, and stunts that culminated in Thompson tying Murray to a chair & throwing him into a pool while they argued who could "out-Houdini" the other. Murray almost died!

If you watch "Platoon" with the directors commentary on you learn about the training the actors received before the filming. During the opening credits there is a night cross country march and the commentator says, "See how scared they look in this scene? They are not acting, they are actually scared. This beat here where this guy slips and falls down this hillside. That was the actor actually slipping and falling down that hillside."

Biggest production nightmare? Othello by Orson Welles. Shooting started in 1949 and wasn't completed until 1951 then finally released in 1952. Welles would also have to take on projects he hated fund production, fire every one, then rehire them a year later to start shooting again. Makes the filming of Apocalypse Now seem like a light romp by comparison.

I don't think JC was in the wrong to complain about the conditions. He was making a commentary on how difficult even trying to replicate under the BEST conditions possible, how being on the cross and acting that part was not "okay" I think that until I actually saw video of an actual person who had been crucified it still didn't sink in, deep enough, what an awful horribly painful way to die that is. I don't think he was dick wagging.

Re: Lucas. Maybe we're all saying it wrong? I mean that has happened before with how people would pronounce JK Rowling's surname. I think she knows her own name the same way Lucas knows how he originally pronounced THX.

Do we know of any more stories? You left one of the most amazing ones out! Shelly Duvall's experience with Kubrick in The Shining? Alfred Hitchcock has a couple of interesting stories behind him, as well.

Goddamn, it doesn't seem like Lucas any credit at all by this point, but is still allowed to fuck around with the films? So messed up, save us J.J.

G Lucas surrounded himself with YES guys nobody was able to to critique George, he was creator of SW trilogy, without critique from outside works can go very wrong direction.

If you read that last article, you'll notice it was apparently the SECOND time on shoot that the Jesus actor got struck by lightning. Now THAT's some bad luck. (Or maybe don't go to empty places and stick a tall cross up in unpleasant weather.)

There's been a lot written and filmed about what a tempestuous environment the filming for "Blade Runner" was. I'm sure there are more than a few stories from that to share.

I don't think general Grievous was a bad idea, he is an amazing character and he only acted how he did in episode 3 (the coughing) because right as he captured the Chancellor and was about to escape, Mace crushed his chest, and seeing how that was where his organs were, it severely damaged him and weakened him.

I'm pretty sure Lucas never intended to use Prowse's voice for Darth Vader, and even more sure he wouldn't use the on-set recording.

4:41 actually auteur film theory is true when the director is competent. The crazed artist is very much alive in the world of film. Orson Welles, Stanley Kubrick, actually most great filmmakers fit this ideal. But Lucas never quite realized he wasn't making Citizen Kane.

I was so glad when The Passion was publically called out as crap, as a member of the third camp who didn't like the movie and was ashamed of the fact. I saw that movie with my youth group and w as like "Wow Peter getting into a fight at the garden on Friday is a bit too long and gratuitous for the admonishment by Jesus to feel genuine" and: "Wow this is focusing a LOT on torturing the guy and less on the important pre and post game stuff (Peter denying knowing him, only one disciple staying to watch and Jesus telling him to take care of his mom)." Can we go back to Jesus doing carpentry with his mom and laughing? I liked that. Why is everyone ELSE crying I feel like a heartless jerk."

LOL he got hit by lightning. If you pause the vid though it says the assistant director was the one directly hit, and had been hit twice before-some people just attract lightning. I saw a documentary on it one, how some people are frankly PRONE to attracting lightning strikes.

How could you talk about Brando's fuckups and not mention "The Island of Dr. Moreau". He wouldn't read the scripts, right in the middle of a scene, he put an ice bucket on his head, Val Kilmer threw a temper tantrum, etc. See the documentary "Lost Soul"

George Lucas also pronounces Gungans differently than in Phantom Menace. Instead of saying *gun*-gan, he says *goon*-gan which is kinda terrible considering what stereotype people think Jar Jar and the Gungans represent.

the reason THX was pronounced the way and not as T.H.X as most know it by today is because he wrote and directed a film called THX-1138 well before Star Wars and Robert Duvall's name in that film was enunciated that way
