Impressive day as we first witness locals from the Vanuatu island of Pentecost risk their lives jumping head first of a wooden tower and we have our own adventure being ambushed by twice the amount of wind sailing to Santo

I also noticed on boats like L450/L46 that when sailing on a broad reach (or close to downwind) with lots of TW/AW, the boat becomes difficult to control because the force from the mainsail tries to turn the boat into the wind, while the jib is not big enough/has not enough wind to counterbalance this action. I guess then that taking the jib down only makes things worse. This situation is probably more prevalent on catamarans because one cannot put out the boom far enough and the turning force is thus greater than on a mono.

It was those surprising numbers on the instrument display. Boat speed goes from 7.8 knots to 11.2 to 13.5 to 14.8 to 16 to 17.3 to 18.3 to 21.7 at one point.

I like the technique of totally furling the headsail and then readying the main halyard for a fast drop. Then on a nice surge, or small surf I reduce apparent, then turn up into the wind with good steering, then run forward, main fully eased and drop the main totally once the boat has got to about 60 degrees apparent. Then, if you are fast enough, you can bear away again in about 15 seconds, with most of the main down and use the steerage way you still have to bear away again and unfurl a full genoa. If you decide to leave some main up you can reef it properly when you are surfing downhill again with the genoa out full. For this I use marks on the halyard to let me know where to drop it to - but I can only do this with a very deep reef so as to not break the battens. (My cat is 38ft so everything is a bit easier and faster to do). Easier to do the full main drop if worried. I did this last about 2 years ago when about 35 knots came in fast - the sea state was still flat and the main was mostly down at 60 degrees apparent, then I ran back to the helm and bore away with leftover steerage way. I try to do it early whilst the sea state is flat still. Leaving it till later has not worked out well for me. Cheers Phil

thank you for sharing the sailing part, it is very cool of you guys to also show when things don't go well. What I did not understand is when you reefed the mainsail, why did you not put a little of the solent out when you knew that the catamaran was unbalanced with just the main in those conditions. Does outremer allow you to use the solent without main? On monohulls, I have often sailed with just a partial solent in 40+ winds, as the solent is easier to reef in big sees

Sailing with the front sail only is a very good option as well. We do that regularly. Here we decided the other way around as we had to go more upwind around the corner towards the anchorage

Great video as usual! I am surprised the native don't hurt themselves. You mentioned how the other boats had to stop sailing due to repairs. Did you buy some sort of maintenance package with Outremer as they seemed to fly around the world to help you out?

We’re part of the GLYWO around the world rally where there are 6 or 7 scheduled technical stops where a whole technical team flies in. If something major happens technicians have been flying in as well. E N O R M O U S benefit over being on your own especially if your technical skill level is comparable to mine 🙈

Head into the wind. That will deflate your sails and break your speed. Then take your reef(s), then unfurl a bit of headsail.

Start the engine(s), turn upwind, set the autopilot to hold the wind angle, set the throttle to maintain steerage, and go reef or douse your sails.

I think I know the right answer but I don’t dare to tell you guys for if you do it wrong you will capsize. So I am daring Outremer to come up with something cause they build these boats for people that want them for cruising

why did it turn into the wind without your control? that would worry me in big seas going thru side on swell .

That's what boats do when overpowered: they head into the wind if you let go the wheel. The rudder loses all steerage.

It happened because the balance between main and front sails was too much aft. If you sail is able to withstand the forces while luffing initially it’s not a big problem (no worries here in Oz, too easy).

You guys are a danger to yourselves - which I don't mind - but you are going to damage a crew as well. No thought goes into your sailing. It has to. How long before you send the mast or a crew overboard, flip the boat or hit another reef. PLEASE be more cautious. You are dealing with several truckloads of thrust and forces that can easily damage people if they are allowed to. Outremer 55's are a fine boat, but they are not for cowboys. The barrier to disaster is small and easily breached. When I first started delivering yachts an old skipper once told me that there are three kinds of sailors: begginers, pessimists, and dead ones. You need a little more pessimism
