Tower of Power was one of the few soul\R and B groups that was almost universally respected by all of the rockers back in this era. A lot of rockers were not tolerant of other genres (ever here of disco record burning events? Look it up). The other one that comes to mind as being universally loved is Earth Wind and Fire.

It's so worth checking out the Tower of Power 40th Anniversary Concert on KZfaq. I had the blessing of introducing TOP to my Dad who was a trumpet and sax player, but had never heard of TOP and was outraged that I knew about them and he didn't. This was CD one of an number of my Dad's favorites (Anita Baker, George Benson, Amy Winehouse (Frank/Back to Black), Marvin Gaye, Errol Garner, Sarah Vaughn, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Brady (his first CD Ordinary was really good), Nancy Wilson, Sadé, and others) that we had on rotation in an old fashioned boom box while he was on hospice at home in 2016.

I remember being a line cook in the 70s, and there were five of us on the line and we came out and sang this song when it came on to all the female waitresses in the restaurant. Those are great days.

I always enjoy your reactions but this one is special. Tower of Power was from the Bay Area (East Bay) and was huge in the late 60's & early 70's. Rick Stevens was one of the great soul singers of that period until he went to prison and the band never was the same after that. Great memories...thank you once again. "So Very Hard To Go" by this group is also a great song to react to.

@@michaelasay8587I actually grew up in what used to be called Broderick and Bryte but it's now all part of West Sacramento. I graduated from Washington high school in 1972. They shut that down and joined it with Marshall high school which is now River City high school. At least, the last I heard. lol. What part of town did you grow up in?

@@michaelasay8587yes, I'm very familiar with that area. I also drove and owned my own taxi for twenty years so I know Sacramento fairly well. I moved to Las Vegas in 2009. In 2022 I retired and moved to Thailand. I still have a son and daughter who live in the area. My son is in North Highlands now and my daughter is in Modesto and of course lots of cousins and friends still live in the area. Closest I ever got to the Florin area was when I lived in Oak Park around 12th Avenue and 34th St

I guess you could call this song a TOP standard a song they always do on their shows. Background story is band founder/leader Emilio Castillo was in love with this woman who was some years older than him. She broke up saying these exactly words "you're still a young man don't waste your time"!
