Philippines was next to Japan in that era in economic terms. She was able to provide assistance to poorer countries in Asia and her education system was well regarded. Now they have all dissipated into thin air...a country where her youngsters can never relate to the nation she was. What price Philippines. Cry the beloved country.

It’s a side effect of colonization. Look at the colorist issue that existed in the country since they were colonized and up till now. The society pushes European features (a high nose bridge, light skin, etc.) as a standard of beauty (look at the majority of their celebrities). Despite it not being a feasible achievement for them unless they have mixed ancestry or get cosmetic surgery. They grew up w/ those msg and have subconsciously taken it in. The younger gen does seem to address these issues more than the older gen; and they’ve taking up an interest in the culture that was there before the Spaniards came. I think the ones that make a lot of noise are the ones that are insecure and want that external validation. Obviously, not all Filipinos are like that. Some couldn’t care less and just want to live their lives. Maybe it’s also a way to see the brighter side of the country and it’s ppl considering the political, economical, and class problems ever since they’ve faced major corruption. It can put a damper in their perspective of the country since they live and experience it. So maybe seeing how foreigners appreciate the Philippines and it’s ppl brings back some hope or a more positive perspective towards their viewpoints. Obviously, again, not all Filipinos feel this way. These are just some possibilities of why they do it. You’d have to actually ask those individuals since they’ll have their own answer.
