My comment would be how great education was way back then in the Philippines. The pinoy youth ( now senior) can speak english fluently and very well verse with his deas. I can vouch for this since in our Language Kapampangan (one of the major languages in the Philippines) we refer to Blonde hair as "Malutu ya buwak" (His/her hair is red). "Malutu" literally means 'red'. I hope I can clear this up, since I think Yuriko didn't necessarily refer to "Red-haired" people, but instead for people with a lighter hair color (could be blonde but could be anything but black) :)

Thank you Lucy for pointing out generalizing prejudices by continents is crazy at 7:05 because it’s so timely how every Asian is being attacked here in the US because of the corona virus when Filipinos are so different from Chinese, from the Japanese from Indonesians and so on. People who generalize all Asians as virus carriers is just wrong when the virus didn’t originate in all of Asia.

This conversation on race is taking place in the late 1950s, and it was primarily in the 1950s and the 1960s that most of the activity in the US within the Civil Rights movement took place. Jim Crow was still entrenched in many parts of the South. One of the students mentioned knowing about "Till," and she is referring to Emmet Till, a 14-year-old black teen who was lynched the year before in Mississippi for talking out of turn to a white woman. So at the time this interview took place, understand the historical context of where these young people were and what was happening in some parts of the US at that time. Some very scary stuff. Obviously, all Americans weren't racists, and there were many white Americans working alongside their brothers and sisters of color for racial justice. "Eyes on the Prize" is a multi-part history of the civil rights struggle in the US, and "American Experience: Freedom Riders" is a 2-hour telling of the story of groups of black and white college students from the North who went into the south to fight together against segregation. You might have no interest at all, and that's fine. But you seemed interested in what they were saying about race, so I thought I'd put this here for you just in case.

That is the problem with Western leaders I guess, they justify colonization with "being helpful" in the colonized country's progress without actually asking the people if they want to be colonized or helped in a way set by the Western standards. Just like the British teen said, they get to choose when a colonized country is ready for its own independence. This choice should be decided by the country's people. Just like today, Western leaders still put their fingers on Eastern countries' affairs and still decide their fate.
