Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. I have been working on this video for months. The first few incarnations were immediate copyright claims. The music got me every single time. But I didn't want to chuck the music entirely. I decided to implement a Pitch/Tone change to the stand alone segments. It modified the music just enough to get it by the copyright monitors.
3. The opening monologue music is from LA Machineguns. The closing monologue music is from Gunblade NY. Two games also by AM3.
4. There are also GBA and PSP releases in the Crazy Taxi series.
5. I am shocked Sega has not made an updated Crazy Taxi arcade game. One would think it would do great at the Dave & Busters of the world.
6. Should you own a DC, this uses the VGA box and supports the Racing Wheel. A killer combination.
7. Crazy Taxi 2 takes place around a city designed after New York.

Honestly, the arcade pick-up-n-play nature of the Dreamcast is one of the main reason why I regularly return to the console to this day. (More than any other retro console even) I feel like modern games are extremely tied to conventions these days, often target the boring ubisoft-like open world formula. With endless lists of chore-like stuff to do. It feels like games are relying much more on completionist behavior rather than the fun factor of the games themselves. I miss the Dreamcast, but the machine most definitely left an incredible legacy of games behind, a collection of games that can-, and will be enjoyed for decades to come. :D

Imo the greatest 4:3 system ever made. Yes, I'm aware that the dreamcast can output wide-screen with the atomiswave hacks and I'm a gd-emu owner who plays my DC over hdmi.

@@Gummibri Same here! :) GD-EMU and HDMI does a lot, I do connect it to my old CRT from time to time, and modern displays just can't do the Dreamcast's RGB analogue output justice. On a CRT it's both, sharp and smooth, basically free anti aliasing :D But yeah HDMI is definitely the most convenient setup these days.

I went back to Dreamcast recently to play shenmue to roam around its open world with endless stuff to do 😂 one of my favorite games ever

@@ChrisRobba hahaha, that is so funny! :D Yeah but I agree, Shenmue was amazing. A very slow paced open world exploration game. Today the game mechanics would probably be considered pretty obscure (except the fighting), something you would find more in indie games rather than AAA games. :) But really, what made Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Phantasy Star Online etc. so special, was because they offered something completely different to the arcade-focused library on the Dreamcast. I guess that's why I have enjoyed the library over the years. A nice mix of everything, with focus on addictive game mechanics. I love Shenmue, and played it extensively back in the days, but it's not a title I pickup every month nowadays, like the arcade titles. And those are extra fun when people come over and you play some silly arcade fun like Dynamite Cop. :D

I bought this for my dreamcast when I was 16 with money from my first job at burger king. My top score was around 21000$ dollars on the original arcade map/setting earning the "crazy" license when you enter your intials, the run lasted over an hour and was a highlight of my gaming life at that time.

I had to copy MP3s to my PS3 to get around that. Thankfully it supports custom music. Same with the new Xbox systems, Crazy Taxi is backwards compatible and I have my own playlisr just for this game.

The game looks clean crisp and dynamic even today. Most importantly the game is still fun to this day.

Yes indead,not only that but but it crushes most ports such as the GBA version wich should,ve never to be existed,because it suffers from a low framerate,poor visuals,blockey graphics,laggy controls and a low cold colornut,also the music was changed and it was all in monoq,had this game been ported tp the nintendoDS or 3DS, it would,ve be much much better in every way, The GBA was simply just not ment for that.

I agree 100%. The PSN port had redone voice acting for certain locations that they no longer had access to, as well as musical changes, and terrible texture work. Having a Dreamcast hooked up via VGA to HDMI out, I figured that the PSN would be perfect when it came out, and I was definitely wrong. The comparison wasn’t favorable to the PS3 PSN port. The best place to play it is still the Dreamcast, and without one, on a Dreamcast emulator. For 1:1 arcade graphics and sound, the DeMul emulator plays the original with the correct rom sets. Crazy Taxi 2 had an incredible graphical boost with far less pop up despite having a lot more going on in every stage.

When I played this in a Best Buy kiosk I thought it was the most realistic looking game ever, I was blown away by the graphics.

Probably tied with the Genesis for my favourite console. I loved the Dreamcast and the games it had. Was indeed a magical time. It should be noted that the PC version on Steam, can be easily modded to re-add the licensed tracks and buildings, just hit up the steam forums and there's a post there for you.

The Dreamcast was one of the first consoles I played till it died. I loved the fighting games and to this day I met lifelong friends from the first version of pso. I was a freshman in highschool and it was one of the best times of my life.

Street fighter Alpha 3 is FLAWLESS on the DC. My friends and I played Virtua Tennis and Sonic Adventure for days when the DC came out!!!

@@RevanMartinez I wouldn't say it was flawless. Despite less characters I'd put the CPS2 version over the dreamcast one. I don't like what they did to the sprites on the DC port.

There's a Crazy Taxi arcade rig outside the Birch Cinema in my local area, people line up to play it. It's still really exhilarating.

It's true, this series brings back really fun and great memories. I remember when the Dreamcast came out and my friend owned one. I used to go over to his home to play Ready 2 Rumble, Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure. I had a blast. Miss those days.

Dreamcast version is the best. Ps2 port is extremely difficult to play as Dualshock 2 lacks proper analog triggers.

This was one of my favorite Dreamcast games! I got it immediately upon it's release and spent countless hours with it at home - such a fantastic game and I loved this review of it! I wish the magazines of the time explored games in their reviews half as thoroughly as you do. Thanks for doing all of these, and as always I'm looking forward to the next one!

I loved the Dreamcast bought one at launch because I’d been playing all these games in the arcade, house of dead 2, sega rally 2, ready 2 rumble, crazy taxi, it was amazing to have them at home, totally under rated system, one of my favourites 🔥

Oh man, I loved this game when it came out and in my opinion it was quite the looker. It had an awesome soundtrack and really was to me one of my favorite arcade cabinets. Later on my dad bought this game and a Sega Dreamcast because of it so I had plenty of experience with playing it (without a VMU). Also thanks for making me remember the Harley Davidson LA Riders game, that was one of my dad's favorite Arcade games. He wasn't super big into gaming but definitely loved the arcades (especially the more interactive ones) and while I might be disappointed in him at least I have those good memories of him with both of us having fun in the arcades, especially in Gameworks in Vegas.

Easily one of the best "pick up and play for 20 minutes" games ever. Tons of fun even today. And I agree with you, its original soundtrack is essential to fully enjoy the game. Nice review, it's always a pleasure watching your channel.

I remember playing this with my sister for like 3 hours straight some days. Just swapping the controller back and forth to see if we can top each other's records in the top 10. Our rounds would be 20-30 minutes each

Recently I purchased a Dreamcast with an internal gdemu SD card drive, this is one of the many games I've been enjoying as of late. And even running this on a 4k TV with an HDMI adapter, this game still looks, and plays great. As much as I love my PS2, there are times I wish Sega had won the console war. The Dreamcast had so much potential

Use VGA or get a DCHDMI mod on your DC. The quality with those adaptors is ass, S-video even looks better in some cases than the adaptors.

The Dreamcast was the first console that I owned where I felt I had "the arcade" experience at home. I aways envied how arcade games blew away my Sega Saturn or Playstation from a graphics standpoint so getting the Dreamcast fulfilled a dream I had as a teenage gamer.

Love this review and nothing short of aggravated that the soundtrack has to be altered in order for this review to be posted (without copyright strikes). I'm sure SLX has to feel the same. Nothing can come close to firing up this game on an old Magnavox CRT, seeing (and hearing) this game, and being completely awestruck by it. At the time this came out, nothing could touch it. The game and console felt like the absolute future of gaming.

It was a frustration. So much licensed music plays that literally every second of this video had to be timed with my voice to cover the lyrics of the songs. The only way I could do stand alone segments was to purposely shift the tone of the music so it sounded way different. Seems fair use for reviews means nothing anymore.

I would really argue the game never gets old as long as you treat every play as a "speedrun" and chart out your fares to play the game as long as you can on 1 play. I used to know every part, every collision problem, most of the npcs you could trick into running into your car....oh the memories of driving into water to trick a fare to stay in after their time elapsed...just finding out what buildings have collision on top is fun with the endless speed boost with your car on steps/walls glitch was a lot of fun. Oh the music was top notch too!

The more I think about it, Crazy Taxi was the predecessor to things like Goat simulator. The main point of playing CT is to try to break the physics engine as far as you can.

Those distorted vocals made me howl with laughter. This is one I remember playing in the arcade too. I'd love to see a review about the AM2 Top Skater well. That one was hard but that still remains my favorite non traditional arcade cabinet because of the skate deck interface

When stopped it you shifted into reverse and then drive then hit the gas you would get a speed boost from a dead stop. Made a huge difference picking up fares. And that arrow showing the destination was claimed or patented or trademarked by another company and that company sued I believe.

You hit on the head. The Dreamcast was so far ahead of the pack when it launched. It's quality library still holds up over 20 years later. I still break this out for some quick fun. I forgot about the bike! I hope I still have the save with that unlocked.

Arcades were starting to die, Sega did a tremendous amount of damage to its American reputation with the Saturn, and the Playstation 2 was also the cheapest DVD player on the market at the time even if it cost more than a Dreamcast.

@@andysee6996 Mega-CD had mostly slightly enhanced Mega Drive games, or FMV based games with limited replayability, 32X failed, Saturn Failed, everyone expect Dreamcast to fail, and since PS1 was the biggest selling console in history to that point. More than SNES/Mega Drive combined. So everyone expect PS2 to be the best ever.

Sega fucked themselves with the 32x and sega cd add ons. Also giving upon the saturn year after usa launch didnt help.

@@mitchconner187 Less the CD than the 32x. CD could have been revolutionary, but outside of Working Designs, absolutely all 3rd parties were lazy with it. And the FMV games don't even frustrate me as much as the lazy genesis to cd ports do, at least the FMV games were something that could ONLY be done on discs of that time. "Lets take the same exact game. Record new music for it and ship it, brilliant!" NBA jam could have used the CD's scaling to make it more arcade like but literally just gave us the genesis version but with the arcades music.

The years that the Dreamcast was popular were indeed some of the greatest. There were so many great titles. This one was one of my favorite along with Jet Grind Radio. The licensed music in these games were great and helped me expand my musical tastes.

I only played the arcade version ages ago, but it was a fun ride! Sega truly was the best at bringing the excitement of arcade games home to their consoles. It still surprises me that Crazy Taxi and its sequels haven't been officially ported to modern consoles like as a "Crazy Taxi Collection HD" or something. I'm not sure if something like music licensing is part of the reason or it is just that Sega forgot about the series.

This has been on my phone since launch and it’s always the first thing I install when upgrading. Even when I switched to android that one time. The phone version has the original soundtrack if the console versions are still missing it 😉 Of course I had it on Dreamcast and PSP that came with Crqzy Taxi 2 too.

Pretty good review! Man, I love Crazy Taxi and I used to play it a lot in my childhood. The best part of the game for me is when you discover the hidden side of it. If you master the tricks, the maps and the customers, you'll have a whole new spectrum of the game who includes +2 hours longplays and getting INSANE scores and amounts of time. Again, great video 😃

I took my brand new Dreamcast to my friend's place, back when we all hung out and drank beer together all the time. After playing some Crazy Taxi, my mates all bought Dreamcasts of their own. For a good while, this was really the only game all played, always going back and forth with topping each other's scores. Such great memories ensure Crazy Taxi is always going to have a special place in my heart.

I just got a job out of high school at a Funcoland near when this came out. It was the best thing going at the time. I traded all my NES stuff with the employee discount just to own the system and the game.

This is 100% the game that immediately sold me on a Dreamcast. Will never forget seeing this one in motion at Kay Bee Toys in February 2000, at that point I had never seen the arcade cab. My friend Mike and I, Nintendo 64 owners, stood their with our jaws dropped to the floor. That night I was able to convince my Mom to go halves on a system for my 13th Birthday present. Man those were the days

Crazy Taxi is one of my all time favourites. I spent so much time playing the Dreamcast version back in the day and I’ve since bought the PS2, Gamecube, PSP and iPad versions and they’re all great. It’s a game I regularly go back to as I just never seem to get bored of it.

I remember renting this game back when i got a Dreamcast. Man i was blown away at how much fun it was. Me and my brother played it so much that weekend that we scratched up the disc enough to where it became unplayable. I still love putting this game in whenever i don't have a lot hours to get locked into a long game. This game is just excellent for some quick fun.

I remember going to Ci Cis Pizza as a middle school field trip and playing this there as well as CarnEvil. Best Crazy Taxi Memories ever. This type of entertainment was unheard of at the time.

I skipped school to get my imported Sage Dreamcast and was the only person in my school to have it, I fired up Power Stone and was just amazed at the arcade feel, I got my friends to skip school to come and experience it, Get Bass fishing with the rod and Blue stinger just looked amazing, then after waiting eternity to stream the Shenmue trailer on 56k modem I skipped school again to pick up Shenmue soon as it arrived, the anticipation and excitement was like a nostalgic bundle that I will take to the grave, These days I play all Dreamcast games on my phone or TV via HDMI, how times have changed no longer do we have these anticipations.

Imagine if Crazy Taxi was remade w/today's graphics! As long as it included the original soundtrack, I'm sure it would be a BIG hit!

No it wouldn't. Modern younger gamers wouldn't spend more than a few minutes in it. If it became a hyper casual mobile game yes, but not as a general framework for a single game.

That's the game that made me an Offspring fan. Sadly, buying the game and playing on modern hardware, you just don't get that soundtrack.

Crazy Taxi and Soul Calibur were the games that truly felt like arcade perfect ports at a home console. And man, that soundtrack... brings me back

Absolutely loved the review! When I was first starting out in college with my video game design degree, I took a programming class using this software program called "Alice". I don't know if anyone else will know of this program by name, but if you do please comment to me about your experiences with the software. Anyway we had to make to "video games" as 2 different projects for the class. My 2 projects were based off of 2 Sega franchises: Crazy Taxi, and Ecco the Dolphin. My Crazy Taxi project was promptly called "Driving Alice Crazy". The Ecco the Dolphin project I think I just called Ecco the Dolphin. I got very creative with both projects, and still have both saved on my flashdrive. I remember for the Ecco project, I got the Sega logo, and boot up sound to be in the beginning of it. That was the perfect touch for that project!

I played this game to death. Learned the techniques for crazy dash and crazy drift, and the game became exponentially fun. I got so good that at one point there was no more customers to pick up, and didn't need the arrows as I had all the destinations memorized. Loved the city landscape and soundtrack. Awesome memories. Thanks again SLX.

The original soundtrack was just as much a part of the game experience as the gameplay itself. I still get a rush when I hear the announcer say, "Are you ready? HERE. WE. GOOOO!!!" then right into "Ya ya ya ya yaaaah!"

Crazy Taxi was may favorite game on Dreamcast and also the one that i've played the most on the system. Along side Shenmue and Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi is a timeless masterpiece that was the reason to own a Dreamcast back in the day. Soooo many memories...Thanks for the amazing review!

Some of my fondest gaming memories came courtesy of the Sega Dreamcast. I used to go over my friends house after school and play this, along with Marvel v Capcom 2 which blew me away.

I was instantly hooked on Crazy Taxi when it came out while I was in college. It was next Gen and you knew that those graphics were the start of a new gaming era. I had that Rickshaw bike code memorized for the arcade version...

I got this second hand in 2000. Very nice game. There were so many great games for the Dreamcast. I remember reading a magazine with all the reviews and being frustrated seeing the games I didn't have like Soul Calibur and Virtual On Oratorio Tangram - I wanted all of the games NOW!

The Dreamcast was such an awesome console. I had an N64 and later a PS1 and Xbox, so only got to experience Dreamcast at a select few friends' houses.

Anytime I hear Crazy Taxi, I remember SoulCalibur, VF3TB, Powerstone, Daytona, MDK2, and other cool games etc. I played Crazy Taxi during the dreamcast era, and had alot of fun with it. Nice review.👍 10:51 Nicely said.👍😄

Dreamcast was a major milestone back then in 1999 not only because of exclusives but it's arcade perfect ports directly from Sega. To buy a game like Soul Calibur and it looks better than the arcade version was unheard of. For it's price of $199.99 you got the feeling of an advanced tech like a Neo Geo, high end PC, or arcade machine without the hefty price tag. I'm glad Nintendo followed a similar approach with Gamecube because I couldn't afford dishing out money on a PS2 or XBox at the time. Despite both systems not living up to commercial success it was really high end tech and the best bang for your buck. It's no wonder why both systems still get so much support and admiration from the grass roots homebrew community til this day over 20 years later.

I remember loving the concept when I first saw the arcade game. It was cool being able to get it so quickly for the Dreamcast. I had a good bit of fun with it, but it lacked staying power for me. First, I learned that I didn't enjoy exploring and memorizing the city for the best routes as much as I expected. Turned out I preferred traditional driving games the whole time. The other main issue is that one of the game's biggest hooks, the music, also became a drag for me. The limited number of songs got old for me fairly quickly, which is an experience I tended to have when game music had vocals. I didn't hate the Offspring, but their sound was one I could only take in small chunks. As I said, I did enjoy it for a while so no regrets picking it up. I just thought I'd get more out of it.

I was hooked on this in the arcade and getting to play it at home on my Dreamcast was so special. It's an extremely one dimensional game with extremely fun gameplay and that's why it's one of my all time favourite games. I own it on various formats as I've never been able to say no to the idea of playing it on the console I owned at the time 👏
