Rookie Rockhounding

Күн бұрын

After a couple of rockhounding trips in the creeks south east Queensland Australia, it’s time to look inside the stones and see what treasures are hidden. Join me while I use the tile saw to cut some of the many rocks, including Rhyolite (rainforest jasper), Moss Agates, Plume agates and more. You never know what you’ll find inside a rock.

Carnelians are red, Sapphires are blue, I only wake on Fridays, To watch what Rookie will do! Haha🤓🐾 Gooday brotha! What a day of cutting eh? You're really getting great at shaping those babies. Well, to be honest, I think you've done an amazing job from the start dude. Watching some of your past cuts have actually inspired me to start shaping stones myself. I aspire to make a tower someday out of...something cool Idk haha! But it's makes me happy watching what you come up with and is why I'm sending you some rough to play with in your package... Which I just officially sent dude!😁 There is also some stones I pre-shaped a little that I thought you'd like and could play with or give away...i just couldn't find the time to finish them myself. My saw blade is done for at the moment and I need new polishing pads...again! Haha Anyway, excited for you to get it. You're going to shoot me (not literally obviously) when you get it. It's heavy...☺ But back to your viddy... 2:50- I would absolutely call that a plume my friend. And boy is it magnificent! 5:10- 100% plume ALL DAY!!! And hells yeah it looks like dragons fire 🔥 I'm nicknaming it Smaug🐉 Now dude... I seriously love ALL of the rhyolite you find... You know that but... the one at 10:47- 💥BAM the colors are poppin! All the colors of nature in one stone 🌈 Wow!💖👌mwah! Stunning Cannot wait to see them all shining pretty✨ 2 more weeks... I'll be there😎 Cheers m8🐾

MARLAINAAAAAA! Dude! So sorry for late response! I’m here now and just loved that first bit haha! Ohhhh yes! Your gonna shape your stones, it’s so much fun, I don’t know if they’re considered specimens or fancy paper weights but it’s so much fun, you wait mar. Tip I’ve learnt, the more flat sides the easier to polish hahaha! Buuuuuuuut you’ve got a cabbing machine now so that’s gonna make funky shapes so much easier to polish. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! Absolutely can’t wait M! Aye! Yes! The dragon from the hobbit!!!!! Okay the rock shall be henceforth known as Smaug. I love it cause it was the only book I’ve read of the series because the movies came out before I had a chance to read the others haha! I’m so so looking forward to the package! And there’s rough pieces in there! Oh and the chance to finish something you started is like a collaboration piece! I cannot wait. Unfortunately though, I think the polishing video is going to be pushed back cause I need more time haha! So I’m gonna do a small hunt video first. 🤪🤦‍♂️ I really need to not say what the next video is hahaha! It will be coming though! It will! Sending much love to you and the family and just hope you’re all doing well. I genuinely massively mean it mar! Talk soon on the gram, probably tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🐺✨🍻

It's always fun seeing what's inside, isn't it? I love all the agates/Chalcedony, but the rhyolites you spent some time talking about around 10:30 were really cool. I love fun patterns in the stone like that.
@Rookie_Rockounding
@Rookie_Rockounding 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rob!!! Yeah, man the Rhyolite can be so cool inside hey. I need to do a test on it and see what it’s mohs hardness is but most of the time it does take a polish it just might have patches where it doesn’t take a polish depending on what mineral and things are where. So scientific right haha! But fingers crossed they shine okay 😊

I'm a brand new subscriber -- I'm glad you were recommended to me. I've loved rocks since I was a child (some 60 years ago, now) but I've never been a rockhounder, per se. Since I retired a few years back, I've gotten into jewelry making and the natural stones are my absolute favorites. I love to see what patterns you are finding when you cut into a stone. Lots of those slabs that you cut, jewelry makers would pay good money for. The one you cut at about 5:10 did indeed look like dragon fire! Awesome! Others that you've halved would be beautiful just mounted on wood blocks or in small window box frames , as art objects. Thanks for sharing and for breaking up the boredom for a housebound senior.

Hi Kim! So sorry for the late reply! I’ve been a bit behind lately. Thank you for your lovely comment!!! I would love to one day be able to share these pieces around. @@Rookie_Rockounding I know what you mean about finding a market and dealing with the shipping and all of that. My two best jewelry customers and cheerleaders passed away in the last two years (and thus their contacts as well), and now my own health issues make doing craft shows no longer an option. I'm thinking perhaps an etsy page or an online store, and I've got two willing daughters who can help. I've got a crazy amount of inventory to do something with. I hope you can find an outlet for your stash, too. Because, seriously, jewelry makers are craving natural stones. Take care, stay well! Thanks for responding.

I just discovered you and subscribed! When I was a girl my great-uncle used to bring home rocks and cut them in half just like this. They were beautiful and I became fascinated with rocks and minerals at that early age which continued throughout my life. Thank you for sharing this and I look forward to watching your other videos.

Wooooah! Rookierockhound! Everything you find is tight! I love the rhyolite pieces! Different materials have a specific "gravity" or "mass". when everything is molten the layers will separate out depending on how much they weigh. Some other things like chemical composition can seperate things into layers (we won't get into that) but basically as it moves layers will cool then a different material will flow over the same spot adding more and more till... voila beautiful paintings! I love your videos always! Thanks man!

:) Mass = how much of a substance is present, no matter the density S.G. = the density, no matter how much material. 11:12 - that depends a lot on the amount of available oxygen. Since rhyolite is extrusive (and usually explosively so), it has a lot of available oxygen, so your greens are likely copper based, reds and yellows iron based and minerals that tend to stay black-grey are likely minerals that were already oxides (ie hornblende series minerals). At depth, in the absence of free oxygen, greens tend to be caused by nickel (chrysoprase, emerald) or chromium (uvarovite), reds by potassium (k-spar), mercury (cinnabar), or arsenic (realgar) and yellow (in diamond anyway) is caused by nitrogen. And yes! The way Rookie cuts and polishes them, really does let the artistic beauty of each piece burst forth!
@13mjunky
@13mjunky 4 жыл бұрын
@@thirstfast1025 I always forget some components for colors like blues and yellows In crystals. I fail at some things lol (mass=the quantity of matter which a body contains, as measured by its acceleration under a given force or by the force exerted on it by a gravitational field.) I had to find this because I have a hard time remembering.

Ah, another Friday and lo and behold... fresh stone goodies from Rookie served up on a platter for us to digest early in the morning! 👍 Thanks for sharing your playtime on the saw my friend, always has been my favorite game in this hobby, that first look inside these beauties to see what magic lies within. 🎁 Exposing the hearts of those little treasures is not just a pastime, its a gift to be cherished and leaves us with memories that will be with you for all your days sir! The "dragons breath" plume piece is an example, those plumes truly do look like a type of fire being sprayed across the stone and a perfect example of discovery within the earth below our feet! 🤷‍♂️ haha Recently returned from another desert trip and two of the larger chunks turned out wayyyy better inside than the outside, one was completely a guess. Thank you for being who you are my friend and for sharing some of your world with us nerdy rock hungry KZfaqrs😁✔ Kudos bromigo and hope you have a super weekend ahead! *drops mic*

Awesome work mate. I just cant help but go Ohh and ahh when you show the hidden beauty in the rocks and I love the special way you share them with us..I hope soon we see jessie move toward some cabbing of these treasures..Food for thought, you can purchase diamond lap discs in a set of 4 varying grits for under 40dollars and I see no reason you cant use your speed controlled sander to drive them at a good manageable speed..A simple mount for the machine through the front handle threaded hole and away you go..Then finish polish on your current discs and some carpet with tin oxide and I think you will be very pleased.. love your show man..

Oh man, to do cabs would be amazing, I like your idea, and recently Pauly actually got the same tool I have and rigged it up in his garage just like how you mentioned. I don’t have an inside place to set up a bench permanently so I need to figure out how to make a demountable thing. But I also need to make some dop stick out of dowel and then get some dip wax and give it a try at least on the machine I’ve got. Haha! Not sure how that’d go but definitely a great idea and food for thought Wayneo! One day I want a whole shed with all the gear in it... one day haha!
