One more thing i'd like to know when the printer pauses, either by clicking pause or by filament runout: does it dis-engage the stepper motors? Every time i have paused a print on my ender 3, after i think something like 10 minutes, the motors dis-engage, which has allowed it to drop the gantry a little bit, enough to cause a collision when resuming the print, and if the part hasn't popped of due to the cold bed already, the nozzle smashing into it as travel speeds surely would

20 seconds into your video and I can answer your question. No, you should not back a Kickstarter from an already established company. I don't care how good the product sounds or how promising it looks. In my opinion, Kickstarter is a way for new startup companies to secure funding so that they can begin initial operations. Established companies that use Kickstarter look like they don't want to take responsibility for the risk that product development necessarily entails. It's almost like they haven't done their homework to determine if this new product is viable, so that want to place that risk onto anyone else, rather than exercising due diligence first. Think about it. If you are a company and need money to bring a product to market, you have three options. 1) spend profits from other products you make, meaning you get all the risk and all the profit from the new product; 2) find somebody else willing to fund your development (an investor), but they're going to want some of your profit of the new product in exchange for their risk; 3) go to Kickstarter and beg for money, shifting the risk of failure to others without sharing any of the profits with them if it's successful. Option 3 is CLEARLY a noob startup move you use it you can't go option 1 and option 2 won't step in because they think there's to much risk. There is only so much money available for everyone seeking option 3, so an established company using it to shift their risk hurts other startups and makes them look like greedy jerks. Don't donate your money to profit margins of established companies. Don't keep funding things that the same company keeps going to Kickstarter for over and over after they're gotten their feet under them. Kickstarter isn't a business model, it's a first step for a risky business.
@redavatar
@redavatar 4 жыл бұрын
Kickstarter isn't IndieGoGo though and Creality is unlikely to fold so you're as good as certain you'll get the product. I understand your view because it's essentially a pre-order but considering vids like these are available meaning they are not keeping the machine limited to just its specs ... well I'm going to take the risk. I think Creality is indeed using it as a way to get more traction. Don't forget though: Kickstarter eats up a good chunk of the end total so this is not some kind of free marketing trick, they'll likely be selling these machines at very small margins.
@AlexTalksTwo
@AlexTalksTwo 4 жыл бұрын
If Kickstarter doesn't exclude established businesses from it's platform, how is it not a valid business strategy? You can dislike the moral implications of pushing risk onto the consumer, I get that, but at the end of the day, the consumer will back what they want for a variety of reasons. You don't have to back it if you don't agree. R&D can be a costly game and although I can't speak to Creality's financials, I can see the allure to having that cost offset by utilizing Kickstarter
@BigfootRunning
@BigfootRunning 4 жыл бұрын
You should direct your frustrations towards “Kickstarter”Creality have simply found an innovative way to market their product and Kickstarter made this possible (while profiting). It got my attention anyway. Perhaps you would like to see Kickstarter add restrictions for established companies. Either way the Creality product appears to be innovative and I am personally attracted to the extras being thrown in with each stretch goal etc. This is actually the first time I’ve looked at Kickstarter despite knowing about it for years. I have since been browsing many interesting products, many from smaller start up companies and artists. I will end up pledging for additional products that otherwise I may not have discovered. Just trying to find a positive spin. 👍 Thanks for the vid Joel, I’ve been hanging out for your follow up. Nice work.
@WarrenGarabrandt

@@AlexTalksTwo Sure I get what you're saying. Ideally: Businesses would act ethically and not offset the risk of development to people who have no recourse. Realistically: Everyone is going to do whatever they can get away with. I get that the gulf between idealistic and realistic behavior is a wide one. My point is that businesses shouldn't be taking advantage of a system designed to help startups get going. They're going to do whatever they want to though, and I'm going to continue looking down on and harshly judging that practice. Up to the point of refusing to do business with some businesses that badly abuse it. Creality shouldn't be doing this, but I'm just simply not going to join that kickstarter. You and everyone else has to figure out where the line is for you.

My main worry is all of these high profile reviewers being sent the best printers, and the build quality varying heavily once production happens. As much as I love my CR-10, it's taken a lot of work to get it to a state where it's reliable, with plenty of aftermarket parts, and the build plate that came with it wasn't even usable due to warping. I'm hopeful that the production units will be as polished as the review units, but I'll have to wait until some of these are in the field before I decide to throw down the money.

Hey Joel, just a quick update in case you haven't been following. Kickstarter users are FURIOUS with Creality over this printer. Many of them are arriving broken, miswired, potentially bad enough to be fire hazards, faulty power switches which might be shorted out, and today they announced that they're starting to sell to resellers before even completing their kickstarter backers' orders. I received my printer yesterday without ANY of the add-ons I ordered (almost $200-$250 worth), and many others have had the same thing happen. Creality is deflecting and not answering questions directly at all. I think you should seriously consider posting a third update about everything going on, maybe reach out to Creality about it, because being such an enthusiastic/vocal person who supported the idea of this campaign, their recent shenanigans might reflect poorly on your channel which I really love and support.

We all know dual z lead screws, auto bed levelling sensors, filament runout sensors etc. So its pretty simple to kickstart that compared to pre-ordering a game. @pixel_arc8550
@pixel_arc8550 4 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewCislak I run an ender 3 pro and with the right profile (Cura) you can get absolutely perfect prints with common materials. The only problem I ever ran into is the fact that you kinda need to replace the extruder feeding part with a metal kit (10-15$, its super easy to install) because the stock one might break. Id say that if you dont want to print fancy materials like PC, the ender 3 pro is a steal of a deal at 200$. If you have the money and know that you will stick with 3d printing, the CR6 might still be worth it. However, if you want the abality to have access to the largest community that has the same printer and the most mods, the ender 3 right now is the best in this regard. Modding support for the CR6 will likely be large too within a short while as the printers arent too different I think. Over all, if the difference in price seems like its worth it to you (auto leveling is kinda cool to be honest, especially if you are a beginner) for the many quality and quality of life improvements, go for the CR6. If you are not sure you will stick to the hobby or your budget is a bit tighter, better get an ender 3 (with the metal extruder kit would be best, it really is super easy and cheap). The leftover 80$ is enough to pay for 2-3 rolls of filament or any further upgrades you might want down the line. Final note: Please use Cura, nkt Creality Slicer. I conducted a small test and Creality Slicer is pretty good, but Cura has so so many more options and results in visibly better prints. Also, Cura has the former mod called Creawsome integrated into its Creality profiles. This mod is basically an almost perfect profile in every regard, its absolutely amazing. Pardon the eventual typo, Im on mobile and english isnt my first language.

$319 is honestly pretty fair. Considering the upgrades in specs that they did can be done on a $200 printer that doesnt have them. It would still cost close or more than $320 total, while also risking damaging the printer itself. I don't think the auto bed leveller is as good as the bltouch, but its still going to do its job.

A year later, trying to get back into 3D printing, I bought this machine. So far, it's worked great with Creality filament, although it has been a real challenge to get prints to release. With my ancient previously opened filament, I've not been able to get it to stick prints. I've got two more ancient but never-removed-from-the packaging filaments to try. Wish me luck...

The trick to using the Creality glass build surface (on my Ender 3 Pro) for ABS is to coat it with ABS dissolved in acetone. It sticks very will. I turn off the fan and heat the bed to 100C, nozzle temp (+-)220C . I've used it quite a bit. I need an enclosure to print large ABS prints. I get layer separation at about 3/4" tall. I have two separate glass surfaces, one for PLA, cleaned with alcohol and the other for ABS with the coating above.

The flexible filament is filaflex from recreus, a Spanish company. The website was on the spool. They also make some less flexible ones that are easier to print on a bowden setup

I’m helping Creality with firmware stuff for the Ender 3 v2, but there’s likely to be some overlap with this model, so be sure to keep us posted about any issues you see. The probe is particularly great. You get the very best results when the probe is the nozzle.

Actually it is still very much a kickstarter project. The simple answer is the same for a lot of Kickstarter projects. Ordering mass amounts of components for the associated volume based lower cost is dependent on volume of sales to justify and secure the orders of parts. Most Kickstarter projects are exactly this. People are probably confused because they have a recognized brand already.

Creality is smart in doing this. They get most (if not all) the money up front for a production run of a new printer that they were unsure if it had market share. The truth is...You can get an Ender 3 and upgrade it and it will be cheaper than this printer at retail and will get as good as or better prints. The CR-6 isn't earth shattering in what its bringing to the table. There's nothing "new" or exciting about it...As in no new tech being revealed. Linear rails and ball screws would have been a nice upgrade. But in the end, it basically an updated looking smaller CR-10. Don't get me wrong...The updates they made to it are nice and what a lot of people are already doing. But for the same price you can get better upgrades and make it the way you want it. For a brand new user to 3D printers...this is a very nice option. I still like it. But I don't think think bang the buck is there if you plan on doing mods. $429 is a lot of cash you can use for upgrades to an already popular and very good printer.

They are not being honest with the Backers, and there are major QC problems- Serial defect fire hazards, and faulty parts causing reliably unreliable print operation. i hear you on the flexible build plate but i have a (i think) similar bed on my cr10- v2 - i have come from a flashforge printer with a flexible build plate and while i loved that i found the usual problems of prints not sticking... with that i had to use a glue stick and a raft every time to get it to work. granted, as soon as the print was done i could remove the build plate, bend it and get the print off but...the build plate on the cr-10 which i think is the same one as this is fantastic, i use isopropyl to clean the bed and as long as i have levelled it propperly it sticks straight away and my first layer is beautiful. once the print is finished and the bed cools the print literally pops off so i dont need a flexible bed anyway. took me a while to get used to it but i love it now.

Complaining about not having a flexible build plate, shows how Joel is out of loop in regards to Ender-3 owners, when everyone and their cats bought the glass build plate specifically to remove the flexible one. (Mostly because beds are warped and the glass fixes that).

Just a quick note for everyone using Creality Slicer: It's not worth it. I didn't know that even existed, but I just tried a bit with my Ender 3 and the result is: Cura is better. top surfaces are cleaner, layers are more consistent (esp. visible with semi-transparent filaments) and details are better. On the Benchy, the lower front looked a bit more clean, but only very little, in general Cura was far superior, not even considering the advanced options. Of course, my Cura profile is more tuned, I made most of the sae adjustments to my Creality Slicer profile as well though. Maybe, there is more to be gained, but as an advanced user, Cura definitely is better in my opinion. I dont know how just the plain stock profiles compare and I only tested one filament (an experimental spool from Spektrum filaments, only exp. colors though) which was semi-transparent and therefore is a good benchmark. I don't want to hate on Creality Slicer, just wanted to throw my results out there.

Yeah totally agree with you Joel. I don't get why Creality went the Kickstarter route. I've back a couple of failed Kickstarters, and they really have a reputation of maybe you'll get something, maybe you won't. Is Creality really hurting for R&D investment that badly?

It would make the hole printer more rigid and stable no?

Great point about the morphing of KS! I've been active with KS campaigns from almost day 1, and have been burned by a couple. Presenting almost complete products gives backers a heckuva lot more confidence that they will actually see a product in the end, so I have no problem with KS as a "pre-order" system. In fact, I kind of prefer it.

Great review, thanks! I do hope they leave the build plate on during paused prints, that needs to happen. I actually wish (and I'm sure there will be a hack for it later) there was a way for an audible alarm to sound, as well. Even if they just have a normally-open connection get closed by the runout sensor so I can connect a buzzer or whatever.. I don't care too much about ABS not sticking, I've never printed with it, and between warping and fumes, I'm not really interested. The flexi was a pretty amazing fail, but I wasn't expecting a bowden to print flexi super great anyway. I actually have only used direct drive on my Anet A6, so I'm not well-versed on the bowden style. (How do you continue a run-out on bowden, anyway? Does new filament just force the other through the tube reliably and contiguously?) I think the kickstarter price is a good deal and it looks like it's going to be worth it.

I thought the same. This is for them to get a feel of the demand for this model category. So it was a pre-order system and some cash infusion. But it will be hard from the pre order system to find out how many people are going to order the unit once it hits full production. They will need to dump the ender 3 pro. They need to have a cheap sub $200 printer (Ender 3) and then this unit in the mid $300 I would say $350. FYI I pre ordered , I have an Ender 3 Pro, and slowing building farm so this new unit is cheap.

So I know I and at least another person who after seeing your review decided to go ahead and back this printer. Seeing how creality has dropped the ball and all aspects of this " Kickstarter,"such as broken printers arriving, with no replies to help emails, the fact they are selling to people via chat and other means when they stated that kickstarter's would all receive their printers for such retail, but clearly have not stopped to that. Not telling backers who pledged even more money for add-ons that no matter what tier they pledged or time frame they had chosen would get pushed to the back of the line and completely ignored. As well as seeing the mean feature of the printers selling point being the auto level bed, but actually functioning properly, or units arriving that won't turn on or turn off mid prints, Etc. Has your opinion on this printer changed? I regret backing this printer, it was a lot of money and they splurge for myself and this being my first creality printer has certainly left a bad taste in my mouth for this company.

Clearly, this printer was not designed by an engineer, but rather by a marketing department, let me explain: Dual ZZ motors, linked together by a sync belt... for what? Either it has 1 ZZ motor driving both lead screws via a synchro belt or have 2 zz motors driving each zz lead screws, separately, where the auto-leveling function keeps them in sync and leveled. There are many other severe flaws that Joel pointed out, like the dodgy firmware. But this one, in particular, triggered me the most. I hope the marketing department had these into consideration when coming up with a price. Other than that, good review, very thorough.
@remotheman
@remotheman 4 жыл бұрын
It's used for syncing in case of missed steps, I have seen that solution some time ago. It looks like you can disconnect that belt - so whats the problem? Also - autolevel is not able to keep z motors in sync when they're radomly loosing steps - belt helps with that(if one motor loose step - another keeps gantry in sync by helping rotate first motor leadscrew). Of course Z motors should not loose steps to begin with.
