I noticed that my laser also had the X axis skewed after I did my initial tests. I think it came okay but when I moved it around I may have messed it up. But I was able to fix it using a pair of calipers to measure the gantry distance in each side carefully while adjusting. You got good results with 6nm considering the 10W laser. I needed 2 passes at the recommended settings for 5mm MDF. I think the 4 diodes in the 22W are not making as small of a spot size as would be ideal for cutting.

Interesting that the 22w is still needing 2 passes on 6mm. I was pretty happy with how the 10w is cutting so far. Going to do a full bot out of MDF in the new year to run in our non destructive league

I use a piece of scrap gypsum board as a spoil board under the cutting surface. The paper on top gets laser burned, but the gypsum is unaffected. I use baking racks instead of the fancy thing they sent you, but same idea.

Gypsum is a great idea, I'll look at picking some up. Baking racks are also a good idea! A nice affordable alternative to Ali honey comb

This is a bit of a weird ask but what screws do you use in the top plate and motor mounts of slightly crude? I am planning on 3d printing the fram and entering it into my local events.

I can't remember, but either 2mm self tapping screws or m3 screws, if it's the version that uses M3 screws you need M3 heat insert nuts If you print it and the holes are larger then M3 you need the heat insert nuts

What kinds of materials can this thing cut through

Basically anything that absorbs that laser light frequency and isn't reflective. Most metals are out, some transparent plastics are too, but otherwise sky is the limit. It might start a fire trying to cut hardwood though and most materials produce very toxic fumes when lasercut.

V-rollers in 2023, I know it's how they keep it cheap. But I think everyone is over them.

Yeah true, a linear rail and bearings would be more accurate but also more expensive. I think this level of hobby machine is going to be v-roller based for a while yet
