this was probably the most helpful KZfaq color video ive seen next to Cullen Kellys stuff. Especially that trick with cleaning up neutrals. Thats a huge challenge sometimes with camera work in forests where everything is yellow green even after a general balance. The slight reduction on lift is perfect.

Just want to let you know that you can do the same functions in your HSL look nodes with the color slice tool instead. The color slice saturation slider applies saturation in a way that doesn't increase luminance which is the same as what you're doing with your HSL workflow. It will save you the time of disabling channel 1 & 3 every time.

This one is a bit more sophisticated than the previous highlight/white and shadow/black matte trick. But this one is a lot more friendly towards my lousy 8-bit images. Not pushing it hard means will not break 'it'. The use of HDR is superior to conventional primaries in 8-bit realm; desired looks is achieved within seconds, without breaking a thing. Literally in seconds. However, it is overly fine-tuned/specific that the FallOff (fade) sometimes does not successfully work on that particular realm. Thus, as with all things equal, there is no one-size-fits-all. Because primitive stuff is used, rendering is friendly towards my lousy system. (I do not use power window. Power window probably consumes extra power. I do not know, really, as I never use it, not once, because I am not into "cinematic" fad. 8-bit image will become ugly very quickly and easily.) Oh, as for the invert of black node, I need to invert mine. Look at the 'key' thing, the mask ought to be white in the shadow/black because it is the dark part what needs to be smoothened. I am stating the obvious for n00bs such as yours truly. LMAO! There is no clear separation for me to look at the effect and hence I tested it with some test images/charts and feck me... it really separates the black and white! It is a no wonder George is 'obsessed' with matte. I should be obsessed with matte too! This thing simplifies my life! I can spend more time sipping coffee until my teeth are stained rather than whipping up node after node creating a vicious node cycle until the cows come home! 99.999999% Internet colourist gurus, 'scientists', and 'mathematicians' do not use matte, low soft, high soft, HSL; they focus too much on 'cinematic' malarkey. OMFAG! Look at their convoluted nodes, they call their nodes "The only node structure you ever need"! I think they deliberately make things difficult and label them 'secrets' so as to secure their own income. Another thing about George is he explains every move. For example, HSL node is to clean up the neutral/s, hence -0.01 is already overwhelming. Some other gurus use HSL but randomly turn down to very low number and turn up the HSV without explaining why the need of that HSL. Some do 50% down HSL, 50% up HSV, also no explanation as to why those odd moves. N00bz like me can spend all our life adjusting and we still see nothing much different with or without HSL (keyword here is 'visually imperceptible'), and so we drop that HSL and stick to HSV instead to free up brain power.

What a fantastic look breakdown! Using an alpha of the same image to limit certain operations is so clever - loved that! I just had a quick question - is there a reason why you're using just the G channel in your HSV and HSL nodes? I noticed that you are switching channels 1 & 3 for the HSV & HSL nodes. So whatever you do in your Gamma and Gain is already going to affect the saturation only. So I'm curious to find out if there is a reason why you do your adjustments to the G channel only instead of doing them to the YRGB. Thanks for your input in advance. Incredible work! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
@george.colorist
@george.colorist 18 сағат бұрын
Thanks Marieta! In regards to adjusting the G channel as opposed to using the YRGB wheel, its just a habit of mine from getting used to adjusting individual channels. You can adjust via the YRGB wheel or the G channel. It will do the same thing.

Question for you. In your saturation layers why are you only manipulating the green channel?
@george.colorist
@george.colorist 2 күн бұрын
This is because we have changed the RGB channels into controls for Hue, Saturation, and Value inside of an HSV color space which we set in the node settings. In this set up, the Red Channel becomes the control for H (hue), the Green channel becomes the control for S (saturation), and the Blue channel becomes a control for V (value).

Thank you As a beginner I have some questions 1. How do you create that matte node in color page? 2. Does the matte target high luminosity or the color white? Thanks in advance
@george.colorist
@george.colorist 3 күн бұрын
1. Right click on any node, go down to Add Matte, and select the name of the clip you're working on. This is shown in this tutorial if you need a visual reference. 2. The matte node creates a key using the luminance range of the shot, creating a smooth natural selection. By default, it targets highlights. You can invert the mask to select shadows. You can also further refine the selection by using another key/mask tool such as the Qualifer tool or the PowerWindows tool.

I would appreciate a detailed explanation of how the lift, gamma, and blacks functions work in this context. Additionally, a tutorial on this topic would be very helpful. If possible, a comparison with the density saturation in Davinci 19 and DCTL methods will also be beneficial. Thank you!
