In today's Adobe Photoshop tutorial we're going to have some fun creating a map of our own fantasy world, just like the fictional story settings of Neverland, Middle-Earth or Westoros. We'll use Photoshop's built in tools to establish the landmass and sea, then construct hills, mountains and deserts with some simple filter combinations, before finishing off the artwork with a vintage paper texture and place names to simulate an old map.

Fascinating! is it possible to shape lakes/rivers let alone 'generate' mountains in particular places for a real world map? also 4:53 Range and Fuzzines is greyed out, u hit some hotkey to enable it?

If anyone is curious after the Stylize: Emboss step around 5:45, you'll notice the 'mountains' on the map seem more like canyons, cut out of the land. If you want them to actually look erected from the ground up, hit ctrl + I to inverse the layer. Great tutorial though.
@ED-zm8ut
@ED-zm8ut 28 күн бұрын
Yeah it was hard to see them as mountains and not canyons. I'm guessing you mean inverse the selection *before* the emboss so that the main land area looks sunken compared to the mountain areas. Makes sense, going to give it a try. Thanks!

Excellent post and great tutorial. I'm fairly new to Photoshop, but got a good result after some practice. A couple tips that helped: 1 - The mountains look more like canyons. You can fix that by changing the Emboss angle at 5:15 to -45. 2 - If Barry is going too fast for you, turn on Closed Captions and open the Transcript - it *really* helps! Thanks for this, Barry!

One addition I would recommend is inverting the embossed layers (with CMD + i on Mac) so the light looks like it's coming from the top of the page. I tried this and it turned out really well.

Absolutely amazing. For everyone who is complaining about how fast he goes...well, he does go pretty fast. What I did was turn on closed caption and open the transcript. Then I completely screw it up the first time and started over. THEN I got it. Thanks a ton!

An extraordinary tutorial. You've made what seemed impossibly professional pieces suddenly become able to be produced at our fingertips. With your expertly detailed guidance I've built a map I needed for a story I'm building, and would have been lost without it, relegated to legal pads and sharpies, and possibly lost interest. Now I have a map that looks like it's from a finished book on maps about the place I want to tell a story about. Very inspirational. Many thanks!

The big disadvantage of this method is the fact that most of the map features, as mountains, are random. I would rather like to have an opportunity to draw these features where I want.
@Idontknow-ep5gq
@Idontknow-ep5gq 4 жыл бұрын
Although it may take more time, you can select the mountain you want and press ctrl + J to duplicate it, you can then move the mountain around and place it where you want. In addition you can use this method but press delete to remove mountains where you don’t want them

I don't even know why I don't have the clouds options and when I checked the Adobe store I didn't see it either. I have to be honest, I have never used Adobe Photoshop and I don't know the interface as well as you do. I would've preferred the video be a little more catering to those like myself. Still a great video, I just don't have all the prior knowledge on how to properly use the program so sadly I have to find a different one who dumbs it down for me lol.
