you could always import the meshes as obj and just use 'meshtoNURBs', then 'MergeAllCoplanarFaces' to reduce the geometry. Massively saves on time

Yep, this works too!
@landeralonso2 ай бұрын
I've used that method and the problem is that if you want to edit or divide the buildings you are going to have an open polysurface and not a closed solid, and if you wanted to close the polysurfaces you would have to do it manually in most cases because its bases (of the buildings) acquire the shape of the land and are not flat. Therefore, the video method is very valid, in my case it has helped me with that problem. Thanks man!

First of all, thx very much, this workflow is really good and interesting! I was wondering though if there was a way to import the correct heigh data of the buildings from google or NASA ?
@NikoDellic3 жыл бұрын
HI, sorry for missing this! To the best of my knowledge, if there is any municipal data available for your selected site, the height data will be automatically applied. You can test this with like Toronto or Manhattan etc. However, this isn't the case for more remote locations, in which case you could either get specific GIS data ... Or you could just fake it by getting a general sense of the building heights in an area and making a small grasshopper script to create random building heights within a range. I would recommend the latter if its just for a school project.

Thank you for the great tutorial. Can I ask you, if it is possible to show the widths of the roads?
@NikoDellic2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but what you want is actually called the 'curb'. I'm pretty sure if you include all of the data types from BlenderGIS, one of those layers includes the street curbs. Cheers!

Hello thank you for the great tutorial. Unfortunately, at the 12:04 marker, the video cuts off showing updated layers. I only have one layer with a grid surface and the poly lines of the roofs.
@NikoDellic3 жыл бұрын
Hey! All I did was bring in the geometry one after another. I created new layers while I was importing to stay organized. All the other layers are just extras from preparing the tutorial. If you have a similar setup as to what is visible in the 3D viewport (surface topo and building outlines), then you are in good shape!
@TheeCashSavvy3 жыл бұрын
@@NikoDellic I will try that out, thank you again!!
@NikoDellic3 жыл бұрын
@@TheeCashSavvy Sure thing. Also if you keep watching I actually revisit the import process. I just forgot to mention to check the scale so I added that cut in there after I did the first recording.

Brilliant tutorial and a really cool result, but I am stuck at 9:25. I can't seem to select the top faces like you show. I hit tab, blender appears to go into edit mode, but I can't left mouse select faces, only first by pressing alt, or selecting all four corner points around the edge of a cubic building say. When I do manage to select a face, shift-G-Normal only picks out some of the other flat faces. Does anything seem obviously wrong? I really want to see this through. Thank you.

@@nathan1459 if you look in the top left next to 'edit mode' there should be three squares to its immediate right, the one on the far right lets you select faces rather than vertices!

Sorry... But no newbie will be able to follow this. Especially online not. To many sidesteps from the necessary ones, far to fast clicking on the mouse, to chaotic file management at the beginning. Also it's been not clearly explained why to extrude the buildings from the lowest point. The map topology is above this anyway. A last point is for this method the buildings are missing any texture. Bad for background models in Rhino. Good if one wants the surrounding area to be really stand back.
