Its all the joys of algorithms.... I probably need to work out how to "play" the mechanics of KZfaq better but that seems like time I could be spending doing 3D design.

I rarely comment on videos but I genuinely don't understand the lack of comments and views on this man's channel. He provides such detailed explanations and offers answers to questions I haven't even had yet in addition to one's I thought of but didn't full research. He thinks as the viewer. It's really impressive!

the window boolean cutter you can bevel so you dont need to use a cube to boolean the cutter again. you can also used symmetrize in sculpt mode. and avoid the error using the mirror tool.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
That's very true. Sometimes it's nice to mirror so that future changes will also be mirrored but you can definetly do as you have said.

Just curious, is there a reason you are not using bisect when using the mirror modifier? I feel like I am missing something as to why not. Loving your work by the way. Really helpful. Especially the callout of shortcut keys. I can never follow along with the onscreen keystrokes that most others use.
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. I think that was just me in a rush to be honest. The bisect option would be the way to go to make everything a bit quicker/have less issues.

@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'd say explaining the why it more important than just showing how so it can be applied to other situations but you're welcome to watch at whatever speed you like and on mute if you prefer 🤣 It is one of my older videos so hopefully they are a bit more time efficent now, but I think that explanation element will always be part of my videos (so sorry if it annoys some).

16:49 - would it be easier to just select 'bisect' and 'flip' in the mirror modifier? I believe it does the same thing and might save you some steps. Fantastic tutorial btw!
@ArtisansofVaul

Thanks, I was trying to do the gothic arches with proportional editing and then inset but I couldn't get it to look how I wanted and the inset and bevel would go funky around the point of the arch - I will try this method instead.

@@ArtisansofVaul It went great, I finished the "windows" and uploaded the result under "40k Rhino alternative Headlights (Baneblade edition)". You can see my awkward attempts at arches in an older set of headlights from a year ago, these are much better. Thanks again!

So good, thank you. Quick question: will the intersecting faces (where the columns intersect with the window frame) be an issue with printing? Would a union bullion be beneficial for that or do we just let the slicing software handle it?
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
You would definetly want to boolean everything together before printing and then cleanup as normal.

Possibly a silly question, but what's the difference between mirror and symmetrize? When would I want to use one over the other
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question at all. So symmetrize is a one off event that copies one side to the other. That means you could then change one side but it wouldn't change the other (unless you symmetrized again). A mirror is a modifier so it stays active so anything you change continues to be automatically changed on the other side as well.

@@ArtisansofVaul hi, I have no idea of its origins, can only trace family tree back to tha late 1890's. I do know there's an Island on west coast of Scotland, think it's called Tiree or Tyree which has a village/small town called Vaul. My Bro went there years ago. It's an unusual name So how come you is ArtisanofVaul??

My computer really starts freezing up when I use booleans. I suspect it is because I use really low poly modelling and subdivision surface (lvl3).
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I found the same thing. I found that it had much less issues when the sub-D was applied or I just used other methods to smooth everything off (like using bevels over sub-D where possible. But I realise that isnt possible for everyones workflows.
@ft7397
@ft7397 2 жыл бұрын
i also use really low poly. with subd . my pc is not good either. but generally it dont freeze. noticed it tend more to have hard time when using booltool

Wouldn't it be easier to make a 180° arch and use proportional editing set to root and drag up from the middle part? I used this to model a whole gothic cathedral and it tales just seconds
@ArtisansofVaul
@ArtisansofVaul Жыл бұрын
That would work too for sure. But it could result in certain proportions of the arch being different in thickness as if stretches I think. But it depends how exact you want to be
