Beautiful work. What is the screeding material that you are brushing into the joints at the end? Looks to dark to be sand... stone dust from the road base?

Phenomenal work and excellent videos! I'm currently building a flagstone walkway like the one in your video but am using very large, two dude flagstones. Should I put screenings down before j do rough layout or layout stones and then pick stones up and do 1" layer of screenings? Felt like walking all over screenings and moving stones around would mess up my final base layer. Greatly appreciate the help!

Do you need the concrete edging/curb? I've seen flagstone paths that seem to have no edging (metal or plastic) at all, will those stones loosen over time? Also, do you recommend landscape fabric underneath? If so, at which layer? I like that you used the natural edge of the stone for the side of the walkway, looks great.

I recommend the edging because it keeps the stones, jointing material, and weeds out of the bedding layer. If the base prep is deep enough and compacted well then I don’t typically recommend a weed barrier. If the base isn’t ideal and you want to strengthen it then I’d use a non woven geotech cloth that doubles as a weed barrier between the sub grade( bottom of excavation) and the sub base (gravel layer)

Great video! Question regarding the curb: I'm building a flagstone patio which will transition to grass. Would you recommend doing that quick curb to lock in the stone as it transitions to the grass? Currently the whole area is raw land. No grass yet. I'm assuming the process is patio first, then install grass, but I'm not sure how to keep the patio's exposed edge intact, so as to keep the base layer from eroding and the stone from dislodging. Any advice?

Hey that’s great. Yes absolutely do a curb or plastic edge restraint where the grass will meet as well. Just be aware that you’ll need to keep it low and small enough so the grass won’t be constantly brown against that edge. So there’s as much soil under it as possible but balancing that with a strong curb to keep the patio in tact as you said

What do you use for a saw to cut through this flagstone? And is there a certain type of blade that works well for cutting flag stone? Thanks, from Nova Scotia!

Hey Mark! I like to use the battery powered 10" Stihl cutoff saw or grinder. A segmented diamond blade is ideal.

Hey! How is the edging material made from leftover material? Also do you reccoment any programs or courses for getting into hardscaping? Thanks!

Hey I like to mix leftover sand and gravel with cement to make mortar for the edging. You can buy higher strength pre mixed bags of it as well. I have some online course modules if you’re interested! You can checkout my website www.hardscapetraining.ca

What did you brush into the joints? What is the best product for joints that is the lowest maintenance in the long run to prevent weed growth etc. I am thinking of putting in a flagstone patio around a pool, I’m in the Midwest so have freeze thaw to consider also. Curios to what joint fill you would recommend for that application. Thank you your videos are well done Sir!

Hey we just used our fine gravel called screenings for this application, but for less maintenance I would recommend a polymeric sand. You can check with a local supplier as to which one would be best, and that it’s formulated to work for the joint width you will be using. Thanks and let me know if you have any other questions!

What is the concrete curb material? Can I get it at a local hardware store?

Hey yes you can use a standard pre-mixed concrete, bagged product available at Home Depot etc. Or you can buy type 10 cement and mix it with sand or gravel that you may already have.
