The MX Mechanical keyboard from Logitech has been getting a lot of attention lately - so I decided to buy it. 3 months later, and after a lot of usage, I thought it was time to share my opinion. It's a very good keyboard, but it has one big issue... the mechanical experience.

Note: this is not a TKL layout! A tenkeyless layout is the same as the full layout except with the numpad chopped off. This is a 75% layout. Ontop of the numapd, you also lose the printscreen, scrolllock, pause, and insert button!

Hey {{3}}! Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you that the Logitech MX Mechanical keyboard has a layout that's more 75% than TKL. It's important to clarify these things to avoid any confusion. By the way, have you considered the HOTO Compressed Air Capsule for cleaning your desk setup? It's compact, powerful, and perfect for maintaining a spotless environment. Let me know if you need any more recommendations or if there's anything else I can help you with!

What does the Pause button do though, you know? I had to search on the internet and after a few links I found some explanation saying it's supposed to do something when you boot your computer like using it to check the POST BIOS messages before you boot. POST BIOS messages!

As a professional, typing experience is secondary to function. The mechanical offers a better feel than membrane, and the features you mentioned that Logitech seemed to focus on? Those are WHY we buy this keyboard. Being able to press a button and instantly connect to another device is the single best feature about this keyboard as someone who is working from a phone, work laptop, iPad, and personal computer throughout the day. Also I NEED it to be as low profile as possible. So much so I almost considered downgrading to the membrane version. It needs to fit in a backpack comfortably. Being twice as thick would cause problems and that’s before adding a very necessary carrying case. Yes the keychron is a better typing experience. I’m crunching numbers, answering emails- not writing a novel or updating a personal diary. I have a custom built gmmk pro for my personal set up. It’s miles better to type on. But I’d never work with it even if it was wireless.

Exactly, it seems like he completely missed the point of it. I want a keyboard that's reliable, has long battery life, and connects without issues. And that's where Keychron is short of Logitech. I do not care about slightly better typing experience, if it comes at the price of bluetooth connection being unreliable.

@dspserpico

“I’m crunching numbers” also a reason why Keychron and Logitech make the only mechanical keyboards I would consider for my office or home office. Need a numpad with a full size zero. I must be the weird old millenial who learned ten key typing.
@highbrassrule
@highbrassrule 2 ай бұрын
@@dspserpico I won’t argue with you here - I used to use 10 key a lot. I don’t really need it as much these days. If I needed a 10 key I’d either get an external one or I’d get the full size MX Keys Mech. I do a lot of work in excel but I’m not really doing a lot of manual data entry so 10 key isn’t a big priority for me these days

I bought the nuphy air a month ago and the typing experience was incredible. The wireless, however, was so incredibly awful that it was just simply unusable. I went back to the Logitech brand with the mechanical mini, and I have to say the typing experience is a disappointment, however I've been typing with it all week long and have not missed a single keystroke yet. I'm returning the linear version I got for the clicky though. I think this keyboard is a little clattery in general no matter which one you get, so I recommend avoiding the linear version as it just sort of rattles. The clicky seems to be the way to go, or at least the tactile. This is not a quiet keyboard, but if that works for you, and you like clicking this, it can be nice to use still. And again... Logitech... You can't find anything better as far as practicality.

I wholeheartedly agree with your review. I ended up returning my MX Mechanical Mini as the typing experience is sub par at best. It feels stiff and "uninspiring" to type on. I do have to credit Logitech for the seamless transitioning from different devices and the awesome battery life. Nice review!
@NicoCoetzee
@NicoCoetzee Жыл бұрын
Nice review, but I would disagree on one aspect. The "extra" features that you stated is not really the primary selling features is actually exactly the reason I went with the MX Mechanical. So, I guess it depends on what you as the user really want. I pair mine with Windows, Linux and Mac laptops and the switching "just works". The only issues I ever experience is with my Linux laptop sometimes loosing bluetooth connectivity, but it happens rarely and is quick to resolve (turn the bluetooth off and on again) and I don't think it is related to the keyboard at all. I have paired up with the MX mouse as well, and the two work really well together and I really enjoy the cleaner desk area with less cables. I use a desktop LED stand in place of the monitor light bar, but this is mainly personal preference and related to my own setup (my monitor is rather huge and therefore a little far away from the keyboard for a light bar to work effectively). I have both the older MX and the mechanical - both with the number keypad. The battery life on the mechanical is a lot better for me. Also, I experienced some key wear out on the normal MX and that particular keyboard does not have an option to replace keys, which was actually the reason I tried the mechanical. I am very happy with the MX mechanical and as a full time software engineer I spent more than 10 hours a day on this keyboard, 7 days a week. I have not yet tried other mechanical keyboards, but when the time comes I think I will return to your channel for some updated tips! Thanks again for a great review.

Exactly being a developer myself I am more concerned with the seamless switch between devices and the battery life. Not a big critic of the typing sound it produces so might will go with MX Mini after all given the other key areas where it outshines all the other low profile keyboards.

This is a wireless keyboard, so you really need to compare it with other wireless keyboards. The Keychron keyboards are really nice to type on but their wireless functionality is awful... they are unreliable, slow to wake up, and battery life is bordering on unusable compared to the Logitech. My Logitech goes weeks without needing a recharge. I would love Logitech to do a proper keyboard that is compatible with standard key caps, but until such day I will stick with my MX Keys... I was cynical before I bought it but the typing experience is actually really good!

For me, the difference between brown and blue switches is not volume, it's pitch. The blues are high pitch, which grates on my nerves after a while (like little pebbles dropping to a concrete surface right next to my ear) while the browns are more clickety clack. I reckon a lot of people buy the blues thinking "I like clicky keyboards", not realising the browns are just as clicky, just not so high pitched. As for the Logitech MX Mechanical - It looks pretty good but needs to cost less. For almost $270 AUD, it puts it up against some pretty strong competition. On the other hand, at least you can just walk into a Big W or JB HIFi and buy one.
@kozas0

Same for me. It's not about the others, I can't stand the noise the blue switches do myself. I lose my focus and can't work. That should tell us how bad is for *other* people.

Before MX Mechanical, I bought MX Keys for programming because everyone said was the best keyboard for programming so I give it a try, after one month of use was uncomfortable, so I decided to try a mechanical keyboard Keychron Q1, it's been great for me and you have the option to customize it, you can swap the switches if you're looking for a different typing feel and the keycaps for a different look. There's a wireless version for this keyboard now Q1 Pro, and lots of other cheaper options if you want to give it a try. I love Logitech mouses, I'm using the MX Master 3 but keyboards is a different story.

I have a fancy custom keyboard for home use with GMKs, oil kings, lubed owl stabs, etc, etc. I bought one of these for office use where I only go in 2 times a week and its been an absolute dream over there. Would I buy one as my main home keyboard? Absolutely not, for the same reasons you mentioned in your "Bad Stuff" section. It's a bit silly to compare the switches to a non-low profile model. It is a fantastic keyboard for Dev work on a mac if you need a secondary keyboard that's thin and backpackable.

Have you tried the G915 TKL? You can't replace the switches and it's low profile but I have the clicky version and have been using my gaming machine since release which is an over two years at this point if I remember correctly. I really like it, I can use it without a wrist rest. I'm still using the Apple extended on my Studio because of Touch ID. So use to it on my MBP I don't want to use a Mac without. I'm still personally in awe how much I like the Magic Keyboard, my MBP keyboard and the G915 considering a kept rebuilding old Northgate keyboards for almost 15 years then used a Corsair with MX Blues on it for about 6 after that. If you haven't tried the G915 it's lightning or BT so not like the MX Keys (have one it's ok) or this but you can do dongle to your PC and BT to your Mac and switch back and forth.

The MX Mechanical Mini for Mac offers a slew of features that checks off all the boxes for a pleasant typing experience, including a small form factor, backlit keys, multi-device connectivity, and a very, very long battery life! I also like the "classic" Pale Grey colour reminiscent of the retro Mac machines. It’s sleek and minimalistic in a way that screams “Apple aesthetics”, and while I don’t hate it, more colourways would be preferred to best fit our themed desks because people have different tastes. The white keys against the black lettering does offer a nice contrast and stands out even in the dimmest lighting, but there also seems to be the sense that the keyboard will be prone to yellowing if used for a prolonged period. Can anyone confirm that? PS: The pricing is fair, I'd say.

Hey! This was me last year! I’ve actually got both a Keychron AND this keyboard so I can talk a bit about my experience. One of the main things you gotta think about is the profile. If you’re thinking low profile, this keyboard is a fantastic start, though expensive. For standard profile keys, I’d suggest Keychron. I actually got this keyboard first, and it really is quite a nice keyboard, but yes that premium price tag is a bit off putting. I don’t really have any other low profile keyboards I’ve tried out so I can’t say anything else about this. For standard profile keys, a solid first recommendation is the K2V2. You get the feel of a mechanical keyboard, the customisability, for a very affordable price. This is a pretty common starter keyboard, and was my first too! It does take a while getting used to standard profile keys after using membrane keyboards from Apple, but I think you’ll come to enjoy the satisfaction typing on a mechanical keyboard :) …switches are a whole nightmare to go into, but to summarise: * red = linear. Quiet, presses down fastest. * brown = tactile. Just a little bit louder, but a slight bump when you press down. More satisfying feel. * blue = clicky. Don’t get this in an office, people will kill you. Keyboard enthusiasts get this because they like the sound! Hope that helps! Sorry for the text dump lol

I touch type, so I never care about the keyboard backlight. I have the MX Keys Mini, and find it better than my old apple keyboard. The dongle is a must. I had too many connectivity issues when connecting via bluetooth. I use a Mac and PC so it's nice to switch between the two with a button press. I don't care about clicky-ness, and would prefer a split dome keyboard over a mech low profile keyboard any day. My dream keyboard is low-profile, multi-OS, split, and mechanical.

I have the MX Keys keyboard and I love the toggle between computers feature. I can seamlessly bounce between my work and personal computer at the press of a button. Solution to this is the mx720 mouse, which has that button on the top of the mouse. Way cheaper, but does lack some of the polish and some functionality of the master. I've gone for it over the master, but am still tempted to get the master and then keep whichever one I prefer less as a backup (cos I got the m720 for only 25 bucks). One thing I don't understand is why people prefer mechanical keyboards. I hate the sound of keys clacking so much prefer membrane keyboards. I also am a two finger typer so I may produce more noise than a touch typist.

I don't get the fascination/obsession with cordless keyboards. It's unlikely that anyone needs to regularly do party tricks by flipping over your shoulder & carrying on. A corded equivalent will be cheaper, with no fear of disconnection & without the expense of ditching it when the battery finally turns up its toes.

Logitech keyboards have their flaws and weaknesses, but the things that Logitech does with their Logi Options software (which empowers owners to customizes their Logitech keyboard and mice), Logitech's "Flow" feature, and the USB dongle features really make Logitech keyboards and mice stand out. Another Logitech advantage that's underrated (I use a K850 keyboard) is the dual markings on their keyboards. Whether you use a properly-marked Logitech keyboard with a Mac or a Windows PC, the keys at the bottom of the keypad as clearly marked for both MacOS and Windows. You will always be able to see where the Command key (or the Alt key) is because it's plainly visible. Most keyboard manufacturers don't do that; this includes makers of the fancy mechanical keyboards. It would be nice if either Logitech made a nicer mechanical keyboard (with all of the above features) or if someone else made a mechanical keyboard with Logitech's superior markings. Either way, one major disadvantage that ALL aftermarket keyboards suffer from is the lack of Apple's fingerprint ID sensor that's found on all of Apple's latest "Magic" keyboards. Booting up without fingerprint ID under normal circumstances is a minor inconvenience, but when you need to boot from a pre-formatted thumb drive to "clean install" the Macintosh operating system, doing so on a modern Apple-silicon-based Macintosh can be a major pain. So, advantage Apple "Magic" Keyboard, but also lesser-advantage Logitech as well.

I’m gonna write a thoughtful comment here. I’ve tried keychron and Mx mechanical. I like the sound of the mx mechanical. At first, I thought keychron stuff is better. But I’ve realized something. The keychron Force you to have your hands placed in a focused manner because the groove of each keyboard is more detaily and has a sharper curvature. It gives the feeling of detail-y. But at the same time, I feel like i have to use a bit of my brain to focus/ put my hands closer together to fit the groove of each keyboard. The Logitech Mx mechanical keys feel flimsier.(yes, feel like a cheaper material) But, I found it somewhat more pleasant. Because it just works. Another thing I like about Mx keyboard is that I don’t have to press deeper into it. One thing I don’t like about Mx mechanical logical is that it has no USB version. I strongly believe Mx keyboard is perfect for typing email things/essays. And, obviously I will use something else for gaming. I feel like Mx mechanical would be unforgiving to an emotionally charged finger press. Other than that, Mx mechanical would be perfect for me. (I also read it somewhere that Mx mechanical USB only does charging. And the connection is only by Blue tooth. So if battery stops working and stops charging, that might be it for the keyboard. I’m not 100% on this matter but please double check for yourself.) pricing wise I think it’s a bit pricey but I strongly believe it just got the ergonomic part correctly. I don’t think I can find something as good as this even if I spend $500+ on a keyboard. It feels like a BIC ball pen. There are Cheap feels but just fits hand easier and feels nice to press down on. The space bar of Mx keyboard was a bit of problem for me. The sound first. And, also worried if it would give out after many use. But, I think I’m gonna buy it. It just felt right. Apple keyboards have the smallest height. And, that makes me having to tilt my wrist the least. This Mx mechanical would be the 2nd lowest height. A tad higher than Apple’s but I think my wrist would be ok with that. I currently have a gaming keyboard from Corsair. It’s decent for gaming but I regret a bit when it comes to diary writing or everyday email writing. I think I have to get Mx mechanical keyboard. For adobe/sound work, shortest key height works the best like the Apple’s. It gives you that confidence the key was pressed in and only once. Instead of accidental double entry. It does happen.

The only culprit to me being the not so replaceable, but really nice for me keycaps, they are excellent keyboards worth their premium. I had a keychron k3 and while a great looking keyboard, it required charging almost every three days of 8 hours of work. Well after just 6 months, the bottom of the keyboard bulged due to a swollen battery. Very poorly made and with equally poor customer support! Long story short they told me to replace the battery myself! I am using my MX mini mech for 4 months or so now and I love it. Small sized, sturdy, packed with nice features and not upsetting everyone around me at the office.

I am so torn on my next keyboard, I love the idea of a customizable full sized mechanical keyboard, need to have a full numpad (have debated just getting a separate one and getting an 80% or TKL keyboad) I like the low profile, something like the Keychron K5 (or Pro/Max) or even a 96% layout like the K17 Pro since the numpad is still intact and the backspace and del keys are in standard location... however shine-through legends are a must for me especially the keys I don't use as often, like some of the higher F keys, the various parentheses, some of the operator keys and the secondary functions like media controls mapped as secondary functions on the F keys or any non-standard locations for other modifier keys. So many times in a dim room I struggle to see these less used keys and when I've tried any sort of lamp or desk illumination the glare just causes me eyestrain. I've been searching tirelessly for keycaps I could use on the keychron low profile switches with shine through top-faced legends but they just don't exist anywhere, and the south facing illumination on most newer pcbs don't help my case either. Corsair and Redragon do a really good job of shine-through but I'm not crazy about their fonts, I have been reduced to just settling for a redragon vata or splurging for either this logitech or else the Corsair k70 (but then feel like I'll wish I ended up going with a keychron or some other more customizable one instead).

Lightning on the magic keyboard, at the time it was originally released in 2015, was very much a decent design choice, main reason being most mac users have an iPhone, and are guaranteed to have a charger for your stuff that way. At the time it was originally released USB-C wasn't really super popular yet nor was it the "standard" like it is now. However, them STILL using lightning is a dumb decision since iPad has been USB-C for a while, iPhone has now switched to USB-C, and all of the Macbooks have been charging with USB-C. for quite a few years now, and certainly since they updated the keyboard in 2021.

Keychron, MX Logi or other mechanical? 1. New Mac user 2. Use a Logitech vertical mouse (Lift or other larger vertical one if not travelling) 3. Writing is my business 4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 5. Post-sales customer service for when I have a problem are paramount to me 6. Portability and pleasant *sound* are very close seconds (all in video are a bit too high-pitched for me, but 'brown' the best) 7. Tactile handgasm is valuable 8. Low or even moderate price is not a major consideration (in other words, I am willing to pay twice the price for the perfect keyboard) 9. Don't care about customisability Additionally, how does one try out multiple kinds of keyboards without spending a lot of money and time? The demo display in shops are free but you can't type anything real. P.S. I window-shopped in Malaysia and strongly disliked the multi-colour lights on gamer keyboards. What's the point?

I HATE mechanical keyboards! The noise drives me nuts, and if I am working near someone who uses one, I want to do really mean things them if they type a lot. Apple's keyboards are nice and quiet and they work well for me. I just bought an Apple keyboard with Touch ID. I love that I no longer need to reach over to my MacBook Pro and use the Touch ID sensor. I was using a really nice keyboard from Satechi that has a backlight function. The keyboard feels great to use but its battery runs down way too fast, even if I keep the backlight function turned off. Somehow the backlight function keeps finding a way to turn itself back on. Because it doesn't integrate with macOS fully, I don't receive battery low warnings while using the keyboard. I know the battery has run out when the keyboard simply stops working in mid sentence! The battery issue is the number 1 reason why I decided to to get a new keyboard, and the Touch ID sensor was number 2.
