Today, I'm planting the new Douglas Fir trees that Leszek collected in the mountains of Alberta.
I want to create a bonsai version of the giant "Big Lonely Doug" tree that grows in British Columbia Canada!
Here is a link to the book "Big Lonely Doug" by Harley Rustad.....

The Farm That’s even still a “young” Douglas fir, with age it’s bark instead of being blistered will crack and furrow. Douglas fir aren’t true firs, but their immature bark mimics the abies genus (true firs)

I started Bonsai with a Douglas Fur. I bought it for my mother but could never find the right place to plant it so I kept it in a pot. I figured it would die, but after several years of pretty harsh weather (drought, freezes down to 6 F, heat above 100 F and very rarely watering) I realized how hardy it was and that made me want to keep it. Then one day I realized it was a miniature of an old, beautiful tree. It was full of dead growth on the interior and unwanted growth on the exterior for a true replica of mature large tree, so I cut them away and then wired it for some training. It is was my first and most prized bonsai I have, and seeing your video has inspired me to do some more.

"Big Lonely Doug"...before he was lonely. I like that idea! I'm looking at preserving some of the trees we have in our area through Bonsai. ...of course, I'll have to hone my Bonsai skills, first. lol I'm thinking of starting with a tree that is in my Mother's backyard. We call it "The Chicken Tree". My great-grandmother planted it in her chicken yard when my now 82 yr old mom was a very young girl. The chickens roosting in the tree caused 3 of the 4 trunks to grow at about at about a 45 degree angle and it's been the tree on which my cousins and I...and then our children...and their children...learned to climb trees. So, I'm going to gather some sprouts and see if I can recreate our "Chicken Tree". ...and this is because you take the time to share your knowledge and skills with us. Thank you, Nigel!

Hello Good Sir, Again, looking forward to these D.fir's progression. But wanted to comment on the Pumice, as I get the same exact stuff, for my trees. literally the same bag. It was the only pumice I could find in my area, and it was found at a Marajuana growing supply store, so a hint to you and others, they have a lot of similar supplies as us Bonsai people. Grow pots, colanders, Nutrients, and more. I noticed you sifting the pumice, and I did as well at first, but found it was all that necessary, so I haven't on the last bunch of repots. I will say rinsing them with water is a good idea. Great vid as usual, and always nice when I see others doing or using similar things as I, which makes me think Im on the right path. Happy Trees to all! one last thing, is the use of rocks, I have been doing the same, first was to help hold trees in place while working alone, but as things progressed I began using them on most plantings and like the look. In a weird way, I feel like each pot having a rock or 2 will be like my signature characteristic, haha.

Good to see them planted.. I have a suggestion.. I think the oldest tree should be grown as a single bonsai and the two longest trees should be grown in the forest along with other three smaller plants.. this is my idea of growing them after seeing the Big Doug pictures you have shown. But as you know better than me, I would like to wait and see for the updates on these trees.

Hi Nigel, its me again! I come from South Africa, and my grandfather owns a flower nursery, of which he grows the occasional bonsai. Ive been interested in the bonsai art for 5 years now, and i just wanted to tell you about the trees i have available for you, if you would like some. They will come in seeds, but im not sure about how to get them to you... The trees i have in my garden will be baring seeds very soon, so I'm looking forward to your response soon The trees are, African Coral tree( beautiful flowers and bark) Leopard tree( flaking bark with a white and brown colour) And Adenium( a succulent, native to South Africa, has pink flowers and can grow very large Cortex's based on how often you dont water it) All seeds will be available soon, i hope you read this and perhaps look up some images of these trees. Looking forward to talking agian Jon Fulcher

I live in western Canada, and I've always had these trees in my back yards. I also recommend you do a yellow cedar tree. If you like the smell of these, yellow cedar is always better. One of the best smells ever created, actually :) I also recommend putting some kind of First Nations' symbol(s) near your trees. A raven, orca, or bear should calm the tree. Ask a First Nations for help about that though. You might be able to get some rock-based artwork.

@@TheBonsaiZone Nice, keep your eye out for red cedars as well. My understanding is cedars like to grow a large tap-root straight down sometimes upwards of 60 feet deep, so I'm not sure what would happen in a bonzai situation. I have two in my yard, but they have like 1 meter diameter, so they're slightly too large for me to work with :)

Also I have to mention, but we have some Arbutus trees locally. They are among the most beautiful species I've ever seen, and they only grow in windy, dry, sandy conditions such as in crazy cliff locations directly beside the ocean. They are incredibly beautiful, and a very hard wood. I think it would be worth your time to figure out how to get a couple/few of them. I don't even know how. I've never seen a baby one in real life.

What about using one of the saplings as "Big Lonely Doug"? it could show how even great powerful trees were at one point far from exceptional and allow you time to grow out the seedlings in proper upright form since most of those collected trees have slanted root bases due to growing on slopes... plus then you won't need to force a larger tree into becoming the tree you imagine.

@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good plan! The Frankincense is native to the Arabian peninsula. I would try and find a pot that reflects the natural sand colour of this area. A more free form pot might reflect the desert sand, but a formal pot would look good also. I would try and get a shallow oval pot to give a landscape look to the planting. The root base of the tree might determine how shallow you can go with the pot. This is just my take on a possible pot, there are many different styles that would suit the tree, you could try searching the internet for similar trees and try and find a tree pot combination that looks good!

I started a douglas fur bonzai about 3 years ago now; she looks like a mini christmas tree now. I haven't pruned it yet, but I found the tree in the corner of my yard growing out of a 45 degree angle hill, so it has the most beautiful trunk, it almost grows sideways and then casually bends up. I imagine it will look very good after 10-20 years if I can learn how to prune effectively. Can you tell me if the tree will naturally stop growing if it gets root bound? or do I need to hurry for ultimate shaping?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
It is very important that you keep your tree healthy and growing well. Putting the tree in a pot will definitely slow the growth of the tree down. It is important to get as much of the root system as possible when you transfer it to a pot. After it is in the pot it may take a year or two before the tree gains enough vigor to be worked on. Major work is usually done when the tree is dormant. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJiah86Kr6fRhKM.html

@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks. I harvested the tree 3 years ago and retained hopefully all the roots. It's been untouched in this pot since then. Amazing as always! Can't wait to see it develop! I have a question, I recently collected a maple pretty large maple tree, about a meter tall, with a trunk that splits into two major "trunks" and then five major branches/mini trunks pretty quickly Anyway, i collected it less than a month ago I believe, and I'm keeping it on my glass balcony through winter since I'm pretty sure it's at least two years old So my question is, when is the right time to chop off somw of those extra "trunks"/main branches? Should I do it now before all the leaves fall off, or wait until spring when new leaves come in? Thanks!
@TheBonsaiZone

It is best to do the chops late fall after all the leaves have fallen. The tree is dormant and it gives it some time to heal before the sap flows in spring. Thanks Rin!

Hey Nigel, I was wandering, have you ever done a wild plum bonsai?

We have then growing in our yard, but they get diseased after only a few years, they get that black knot growth on them. I had one long a go, but I had to give up on it as it too got diseased.

They are often used as Christmas trees, the Douglas Fir is not a true Fir tree, here is the Wiki... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_fir

How long after repotting would you consider waiting till you start trimming and wiring.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 4 жыл бұрын
I would wait until it starts to put out strong growth, this usually takes at least a year. My trees grew very weakly last summer, just barely surviving, I'm hoping for strong growth this year.

@@TheBonsaiZone I have a douglas fir I plucked out of the forest here in BC a few days a ago it must be about 7-10 years old I believe. The weather is freezing at night but hot in the day so I've kept her inside since repotting but I'm wondering if I should allow it to commence rerooting before trimming and or wiring

Hi Nigel, is it too late to pot evergreen trees now
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
It all depends what you do with the roots. If you are doing a lot of root pruning, it is better to wait until spring when the sap has flowed and your needles are back to the normal green colour. They can be re potted safely, in fall if you limit the root pruning to a light trim.

can i create a bonsai woth every small tree that i can find in the forest?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, any tree can be made into a bonsai tree, some are more suitable for smaller size trees than others, and some are easier to shape and care for.

Why didnt you wire them in the pot??
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 5 жыл бұрын
I like the freedom of moving them around until the final position is determined. The wire can leave nasty marks on the surface roots, so I always hold the trees in place with rocks until the roots grow enough to keep them firm in the pot. This usually happens over just one summer.

At the moment he is by himself in the real world, but new trees will be growing in around him. In the past he was surrounded by an old growth forest. I'll be picking a tree out in the future that will represent Big Lonely Doug, but I'm not sure what time period I will represent for the composition.
