The prep work is always the tedious part but makes the end result so much better! You’re basically doing the back to Eden method which is perfect for trees and shrubs! Looking forward to seeing what you add to the space :)

Jenny, this looks amazing! You got a beautiful curve on the edge as it narrows down the side of the house. GOOD JOB👍🏻 That’s a lot of heavy work. Im glad you had Dave to help you. I’m starting a similar project tomorrow. It’s just me, and I’m not as young & strong as I once was. 18’ X 8’, joining up 2 existing raised beds & 3 evergreens. The trees are getting bigger & harder to mow around. Between 10 & 15 feet tall. I planted them at about 18” tall some 7#8 years ago. So I’ve got my cardboard, grass clippings, leaves & some compost at the ready. I’m signing up for chip drop for free wood chips. I’ve got some metal edging to install the 18 foot space between the 2 raised beds. Im dreading how much heavy work this will be, but you were an inspiration to me tonight. 🇨🇦🌺🪻🌲🌲🌲🌹🏵️

Everything looks great. That is a lot of labor and I really appreciate taking your time to get it to completion. I'm finding I can't get done in a day near what I used to but coming to grips with it is what really counts.

Love it. All these “not enough” and miscalculations would never happen to Martha Stewart but these things do happen to real people. You’re very relatable. My kind of gardener. Thanks for not editing out the reality.

I loooove seeing new projects like this 😊 A lot of work, but it's really worth it! Did my border end 2022, still very happy with it, it's decomposing slowly but surely, hoping to have healthy soil in the next years. Good job you two!

That's a huge space! Those rolls sure do make quick work of laying down cardboard. I use wood chips on top of cardboard as well, but I usually wait a few months or even until next season to actually plant up the bed as otherwise, I find that the grass starts creeping into the spots where I put the plants & it's a right pain to weed out. Can't wait to see the progress as you plant up this bed!

This is going to look great. I used this method for all my garden beds. Just a tip for next time, I cut my edge first then put down and folded it over the edge, that way the grass is covered and can't grow around the cardboard. I also found it better to add a layer of soil first and then mulch. Happy planning for your garden.

I do love me some symmetry. You put in the hard work and it looks great. I was making notes to insert comments for things I would've suggested 😂 but you covered everything! Right down to the v-notch in the grass and having a sharp blade. I plan on using Ram board for my lawn conversion. As much as I love shopping, there's no way I'd have enough cardboard. My only note would be to perhaps wait to plant in the area that's just chips without compost or leaf litter. That'll allow more time for the chips to break down. But there's a bunch of different ways to do it and they all work.

Hi , I am also in the process of doing a border , a mixed border like yours. Thank you so much for sharing this video and taking us along. Mines about 35’ full sun w 6+ hours but it’s right next to our driveway. I started w a Jane Magnolia and a little Miss Kim lilac. I have a witch hazel in there which is native. I’m in southwestern PA zone 6a. I’m looking forward to following along.

Great job Jenny. I was confused at first why yo made a straight line, but glad later you amended that. So much work. I also am tremendously thankful that you mentioned ram board. I'm about to start this kind of project and bought " contractor paper". No place could I find out what contractor paper was. I bought that from Amazon but haven't used it yet. Now buying ram board which I've read is 5x stronger than contractors paper. So thanks so much for my this info.

Fabulous project. Are you planning to add some medium size native flowering trees like redbuds or viburnums for dappled shade? Even when plants are labeled ‘full sun’ that doesn’t always mean full afternoon sun in the southern summer.

Dang girl ... that was a lotta work - well done !!! I wonder - do you know how long the Ram Board takes to break down. I have several beds that are overgrown with grass & weeds, but also have daffodils in among the "unwanteds". After the daffies are done (gone yellow), I would love to cover the area and mulch it but don't want to inhibit the daffs ... Any suggestions (other than getting in there and weeding them out) ???
