With the departure of the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, the Beluga XL is likely to become the largest commercial aircraft in production in the world. With its large hump and vast interior space, it is perfectly suited for carrying aircraft components, like a pair of Airbus A350 wings, across Europe.

But looking at the aircraft you can't help but wonder if Airbus ever gave any thought to converting these planes back into passenger usage. After all, wouldn't it have all the advantages of the Airbus A380 but with twin-jet economics?
The Beluga XL is 63.1 m (207 ft 0 in) long, and has a wingspan of 60.3 m (197 ft 10 in), which is around the same of an Airbus A330-200 - what the Beluga XL is based on. The real advantage is the internal space - 2209 m3 (78010 ft3) of it.
The internal area of the plane is 46.56 meters long, 7.7 meters wide, not including the sublevel cargo deck for freight, and 7.9 meters high.
The a380 has a fuselage dimension of 8.4m high, its cabin is 6.54m meters wide and 50.68 Metres long.
So, lets install some seats - time to do some maths. Looking at the cross-section of the plane, its clear that we can fit in two decks - if not three. These two aisles would be 40 inches combined width, or 1 meter, leaving us 670 cm, or 264 inches to play with. If each seat it a nice 18 inches wide, or 46 cm, that means we can fill in 14 and a half seats across...This would have to be in a 4 - 3 - 3 - 4 configuration. We might have to take out a seat in the middle to make a third asile, so we will say 14 seats.
If the seats have 31 inches of legroom, or 70cm, then we could fit in 55 or so rows, leaving room for door spaces.
This would mean on one deck, 14 in 55 rows would be 770 passengers in total if all economy in the tightest configuration. If we include the second level, its likely we could get this plane to 1200 passengers if all economy, or close to.
Naturally we want to include some premium space for our more full cabin of 22 inch business class seats instead on the lower deck. This deck, being based on the A330-200 fuselage, would be the smaller 525.78 cm or 17 feet and 3 inches. This space would have the same twin aisles, and fit 6 business class seats in a 1-2-1 open suite configuration. At 78 inches of legroom, or 200 cm per seat, we could fit 20 or so rows. - because I love bars on planes. This is 4 passengers per row or 80 passengers in total.
This gives us a total capacity of around 880 passengers. The A380 by comparison is rated for 538 on the main deck and 330 on the upper.
The width of the plane would also lead to some pretty crazy ideas, such as including suites, private cabins, and even restaurant and dining areas. After all, remember that cargo subdeck I mentioned? its a cozy 16 meters long and shares the same width as upstairs. If not filled with the passengers' suitcases, this deck could be a boarding lounge.
Because the aircraft has a giant door on the front, this could be used as a way to very quickly board and disembark passengers - after all, the front of the plane comes off and everyone could just walk off.
This aircraft could be a combi plane. Because of the way its designed, who is to say that a passenger section couldn't be slotted in and out when needed!
This plane has a cruise speed of only 37 km/h (458 mph, 398 km) , Mach 0.69. Meaning it takes a bit longer to get where you need to go. It also only flies at a lower 11,000 m (35,000 ft), which would make it susceptible to clouds and other weather events.
It only has a range of 2,300 nautical miles, or 4,300 kilometers. London to New York is 5571.55 km or 3008.39 nautical miles - putting this plane out of practical use for arguably one of the most popular routes in the world.
If we said 600 passengers, at 60kg each, the average weight of a person, would be only 36,000 kg. Say 9,000kg of luggage, that takes us to 45,000 kg, a nice 5,500 kg under the max limit of 50,500 kg (111,333 lb). This means a bigger fuel tank and 5,000 liters of fuel, which might be enough to get it to where it needs to go - especially if it had more modern engines like those used on the A350.
Speaking of engines, this plane would end up burning far less fuel than the Boeing 747 or Airbus A380, and give the double-decker design the advantage of twin-jet economics. The plane as well would only have the footprint of an A330, and would be able to land at smaller airports and require no change to airport gates.
Airbus fully intends to sell or rent off the Bulga aircraft at the end of their service life at Airbus - likely within the next 20 years. This means that this aircraft could see a second life for all sorts of operations, including passengers. Airbus ask for ETOPS certification to fly the aircraft across oceans - meaning they are full considering either using these planes for overseas charters.

Fun fact: the most people ever flying on the same airplane was over 1,000 in a Boeing 747 back in 24 MAY 1991 during Operation Solomon in Ethiopia. Someone was even born mid flight.

The capacity of the plane was nagging on me the whole time. I was thinking 'surely Airbus wouldn't have spent time and money on the a380 if the beluga was so easily retrofitted.' Not to mention wondering just how much the beluga can carry in terms of weight. I didn't think it was much; given it tends to carry bulky, but light items.

Yeah, It's MTOW is actually reduced by 15 MT compared to regular A330 due to worse aerodynamics and payload to 50T from -200F's 70T.

@@joel_ph your seat cushion can be used as a parachute in case of emergency. To use, simply hold it above your head and hope the tiny extra surface area will be enough to slow you down at all.

That’s interesting, Sadly it wouldnt work in reality, I’m an aerospace engineer and to change the concept, you have to consider, an imposed load( passenger and luggage weight) a variable load ( passengers moving about) this plane was designed with a fixed dead load, meaning any extra designed weight or overweight and the plane due to its irregular shape would make the plane unflyable. Good idea tho it looks good. 🙂

How about cabin pressurisation ? If everything is add up it will be heavy as a380 . The more powerful engines will require. Those a330 are not powerful enough

I lived in Houston and saw the super guppy up close and flying on multiple occasions. It’s one of my favorites just because of how wild that thing looks. It looks like there is no way in hell it should ever get out of ground affect, yet there it is buzzing around. Such a wild looking plane!

You know, as much as there are drawbacks, that's actually a pretty good idea and I honestly never considered the thought of using the Beluga in this way. In fact, I think the ranges would improve if they update the engines like a NEO version of the Beluga and maybe a wing redesign as well.

The reason that the 747 and 380 walked off into the sunset is that there is no demand for such huge aircrafts. Beluga XL is basically a high volume freight mover. It doesn't have either the engine power or fuselage and undercarriage strength to carry huge amounts of passengers. To carry the passenger number suggested the entire aircraft would have to be redesigned with more engines.

Greetings from Hamburg! Here you can sometime see the Beluga lift off from Finkenwerder, where Airbus has a giantic factory including an own airport. Quite an impressive sight, especially as that thing looks so slow it´s barely believable there´s enough aerodynamic going on to keep it "afloat".

Well, despite being unfeasible turning the "Beluga" into a passenger airliner, you can still turn it into a sort of airship-like ultra-luxury craft, cargo upstair, passengers on the lower deck in an all-Business configuration. Just an idea, might still be unpractical...

When watching this video, I was surprised by how well a plane with such a huge cross section could fly, and it made me think: Has any aircraft manufacturer considered a concept for a plane, based off the regular 2 engine model, that seeks to gain a significant increase in internal volume, without much of an increase in the size of the aircraft, it's weight, it's carry capacity, or it's fuel consumption? And if not, would such a concept be possible? A new type of aircraft, around or slightly above the modern double egines in weight and size, but with a much larger cabin internal volume, that could be used to finaly stop packing seats so tightly, and give the passengers some much needed leg room? *(literally)*

Beluga is larger not because it's optimal for cargo transportation but because it has to be that large to transport the desired cargo, you can't increase the internal volume without increasing the weight of the aircraft

@@Uryendel I understand that for the beluga the large frontal cross section was a necessity, as well as the fact you need more material for the structure, but here is the thing: the beluga still has remarkeable range and cross continent abilities, running on only two engines What I am proposing is not something as big as the beluga turned into a passenger aircraft, but simply something out of the same weight class as planes of similar size today, but that has a slightly increased diameter for the cylinder of the cabin, sure you would need a bit more matierial, but the fuselage is one of the lightest things on an airplane, and the volume grows at a factor of the diamater faster than the area of the enveloppe, so you could get big gains in internal volume by making the current 2 engine planes, just a tiny bit wider, and that is the point of the concept

@@anonymous-rb2sr Belgua doesn't have a remarkable range, its range is way lower than a regular A330. You realize that the goal for aircraft manufacturer is to produce the largest cabin possible that can fly? A bigger cabin than an A330 is called an A350, and they were able to make it only by making the fuselage lighter to compensate the bigger size of the aircraft. The only way you would ever see bi-motor aircraft bigger than an A350 (with the same wing-span) is by having lighter material and better engines (or better wings)

@@Uryendel The cabin on the A350 is mostly longer, and it tapers less towards the back, it's straighter, and this is where the extra room comes from But the A350 has 315 seats, which is a large increase from the A330's 260 seats (again the extra space come from the plane being longer rather than wider) So the 350 isn't at all what I was proposing, and it falls into the trap which I said to avoid, which was to avoid using the extra floor space to pack more seats Of course by virtue of being bigger it would consume a bit more fuel, but this is the entire point, this is the drawback of the concept A plane, that has roughly the same weight, but more internal volume, at only a small cost in extra fuel consumption It's really straight forward but you seem having trouble understanding what I am saying, I keep repeating myself, it's getting a bit annoying And by the way, the A350 is more fuel efficient per passenger than the A330, so if you were to focus on the extra volume rather than taking in more passengers, you could run the A350 in a configuration that has the same fuel economy as the A330(lower), while having significantly more room inside, and keep in mind that this remains true despite the A30 in no way being optimized for that goal

I was wondering about the weight capacity of the Beluga. Nice to see someone already crunched the numbers. To make all that cargo space usable at normal passenger/cargo densities I suppose you'd need to replace the engines (and probably the wings as well) with something stronger and with more fuel capacity.

Mate, that's very interesting. Maybe you can do a similar video base on the space shuttle if they never get retired and still in service, and someone like Richard Branson bought those shuttles from NASA and converted them into passengers space shuttles, to fly them between Sydney to London, for example. Then breakdown into the cost, practicality and feasibility. This will be a very interesting video to watch. Cheers.

The cargo doors of any retrofitted freighter are extremely sensitive to wind. Even the small ones on P2F conversions like on the 757 can only be opened to a certain amount of wind speed. This is the reason why Airbus built special hangars to load/unload the Belugas independent of the weather. This works for special freight but would render passenger services uneconomical. So it would make most sense to keep the fuselage intact without cutting out the door in the first place or modify the plane in a way that it is sealed and can never be re-opened.

Great analysis however I don't think 2 engines would be enough. We can upgrade this further by attaching some A340-500/600 wings and 4 A339 engines, alongside a third main landing year leg. The new wings would help to keep the range between 2000-3000nm ;) Also I think an upper deck would be better off in a 3-3-3-3 configuration or 2-4-4-2 allowing for wider aisles so we could get rid off evacuation issues.

Great video, but I think the real passenger mission for a plane like this would be as a flying yacht for a billionaire. A glass nose, a lounge, bar, bedrooms, throne room (!), sweeping stairs, a garden, skylights, toy storage, etc, etc.

If they can figure out weight and power issues, it might be good for commuter routes, as those are short and sometimes dense. However, it would be even less economical than a 747, as it has way more seats that are harder to fill. If this was a private jet that could actually fly far, it could work.

empty it could fly quite far I believe. The issue is boarding, but as its nose can open, whos to say that it couldn't load in a whole deck of passengers (who board at the airport and get put into the plane). that would be a fast turnaround

@@FoundAndExplained yeah. The AN-225 can also fly far when not holding cargo. However, airplanes are meant to be carrying something. And I'm not sure how heavy the average private jet weighs when compared to fully loaded commercial aircraft of a similar size. 🤣

Beluga cargo compartment are not pressurized, when it climbed above 15000 feet (4500 meters) everyone onboard is dead, except pilots , the only part that's pressurized is the cockpit and small crew compartment behind the cockpit.

With a little bit fitness human can still breathe normally (and walk) at 5000m+, 6k m are also possible without extra oxygen(for example at mountain climbing). I start recognizing the thin air from 4500 to 5000 m on, walking at 5500 makes a major difference to 4500 m. Overweight people may get problems earlier.
