Creating A Poor Man Food Plot For Better Deer Hunting - Start To Finish

Thinking of creating a food plot on your hunting property this offseason but you don't have the big equipment like the guys on TV? Don't worry because that is NOT a problem and in this video we show you how to create a poor man food plot for your hunting property.
These smaller food plots have many names, micro plots, pass through plots, staging plots, kill plots, and really they are all referring to the same type of food source. It's a food plot that the deer on your property feel comfortable coming to and feeding in during daylight hours.
The location of this food source should be located in between the bedding area and the destination food source and I try not to make these plots much larger than 1/4 of an acre in size. Because of the smaller area being planted for the whitetails we need to make sure we are planting a very browse tolerant variety of seed. I personally really like to plant clover and cereal rye for the first two seasons as I work on weed control, as there are a few herbicides that are friendly to clover. Once I feel the weeds aren't terrible, I mix in perennial chicory into the clover stand and the deer LOVE it!
These smaller plots offer you the hunter a safer place to target deer as well as the whitetails will likely stop in your poor man plot and then continue on to their destination food source, giving you an opportunity to get down from the stand / blind.

If Past Jake can cut and clear a 1/4 acre of trees all by himself, I'm impressed. I'm shot after cutting down and clearing out only three trees - those suckers are heavy. Micro plots are a great idea but I'm leaning toward hiring a dozer and operator for a day and having him clear out a few predesignated mico-plots. Am I getting poor man's plot confused with lazy man plots? All kidding aside, did you also use a prescribed burn for the dead vegetation? What is the future plan with the existing stumps? It seems like they are taking up space and preventing you from a full planting.

Ha. Past Jake might have had some help from his brother. But we burn wood all winter so we blocked up those trees and got them out on an ATV. With other micro plots I’ve just made huge piles for rabbits. Hiring a dozer or someone with a forestry mulched to shape a plot would be much easier and it would be easier to bring in an ATV to disc / drag / pack the soil in the future. I’m all for the lazy man plots! As far as the weeds, I just sprayed 3 times through the growing season and let the dead weeds decompose. No burning on this one, some people do that every time they spray. By late July I had no weeds and a pretty good seed bed. And for now I am going to leave the stumps, most were maple and elm, both are great stump sprouters. This means they’ll take up water, not necessarily good for a food plot, BUT they will pull minerals from deep within the ground and those nutrients will be available in the new growth coming from the stump. They act kinda like mineral sites and I need as may of those as possible because baiting is banned in Michigan. Lookup Mineral Stumps. Some cool studies have been done on them. Hope that helps!

Hey Mark. We use 3 varieties of clover in our plots to ensure that at least one of them will be thriving depending on the conditions (soil / weather / etc). We use Ladino / Dutch / Alsike clover mixed equally, so 1/3 each. Every once in a while i'll toss in some radish, but that's normally once the plot is established, i'll throw the radish in there before I mow the plot for the last time in early august. I do throw cereal rye in every clover plot over Labor Day weekend. This helps build the soil, suppress weeds and offers a food source into the winter months.

I think that an ATV is all you need. If you're able to connect different implements, an ATV, sprayer, disc, drag and cultipacker. You don't need all of these items but this would be my 'wish list' for using an ATV to prepare plots. Really you could just get away with only having an ATV and a drag.

Thank you! We haven’t taken a deer out of the plot we created for this video yet but we’re waiting for a very specific deer on that property. We also need an East wind to hunt that one so the hunting opportunities are more limited. But each time we’ve sat overlooking the plot we’ve seen deer moving through. We have taken deer out of other micro plots and I was actually fortunate enough to shoot my buck this year skirting the edge of one while he was checking the plot for does.

What about the large stumps? Won't they destroy tiller? Thoughts? Good video

In these small, in the woods plots I am leaving the stumps. I am not using a tractor / tiller in these locations so the stumps do not bother me. I actually like them as many will sprout providing additional browse within the plot. The stump sprouts have shown to have much higher concentration of minerals as well! If I am using a tiller to mix in lime, I am using a small walk behind garden tiller, not one on a tractor or ATV. Hope that helps!

The best way is to get a dozer in there and push them out. I’ve also heard of guys drilling holes in the stumps, soaking them with diesel and burning them down. I’ve never done that so maybe Google that before trying it. I normally leave mine to see what ones sprout up, free mineral sites! The ones that don’t I take the chainsaw and cut them flush with the ground (once my blade is already shot and I don’t care about some dirt in there). I just now my clover plots so as long as the stump is below the mower deck I’m happy with it.

I think it would depend on how much sunlight is getting to the ground. Don't check the area out now but go back in the summer. If there is not sunlight hitting the forest floor and there is nothing growing currently, you will not be able to grow a food plot there. It needs light. If there is a big enough hole in the canopy and you can tell there is a bunch of weeds and grass in this location you'll probably have decent success once you address the weeds and soil fertility. But most of the time putting in a plot in the timber requires a few trees to come down. Hope that helped!

I don't use food plots, but I'm sure there has to be natural ways of doing so. Glyphosate causes cnacer all kinds of problems. It's been patented as an antibiotic. Think about what that does to the deer's gut. Glyphosate kills bacteria. Deer require the bacteria in their gut to break down what they eat. If the microbes and bacteria are killed off by glyphosate, the deer cannot break down what they eat and can suffer malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies. Most humans have measurable amounts of glyphosate in their urine. Look at the explosion of gut problems in Americans. IBS, IBD, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colits. Glyphosare is destroying the gut microbiome of those who consume it. Trying to avoid it in the Standard American Diet is almost futile. Do we really want to add more of it to our diet when we're already exposed to dangerous levels?
