How To Create A Buck Vacuum On Your Small Parcel

There are several whitetail habitat, herd and hunting steps that you can practice to attract and hold more bucks on your land this Fall. You can create a vacuum on your small parcel that sucks bucks into your land at just the right time of the year to create a quality herd and hunt. If your land can only be hunted during the rut for the oldest bucks in the neighborhood, then drastic changes need to be made. The steps discussed for creating a buck vacuum in this video, will help you attract bucks, hold bucks, protect bucks and then hunt those same bucks if desired. Whether you call it a buck magnet, a buck vacuum or just simply a set of practices for creating the conditions to hold more bucks on your land, here is how it is done...

This makes perfect sense and I would have never even considered this. I have a 40 acre farm and I provide food for deer year round. I'm covered up in does and fawns. The last two years I wasn't feeding as much and I had nice bucks on my property from July on through the rut. This year, I've yet to capture one single decent buck on camera. Just a couple young ones. It's too late for this season so I'll hunt it the best I can, but for next year I'll try to deter the does and fawns. Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

I am absolutly amazed by your videos ! Here is why : I'm hunting since 1994 in Germany. Mostly roe deer, wild boar and red deer. Your findinds on whitetail habitat, hunting strategies, population management etc. can be easily transefered to our roe deer Capreolus capreolus and Odocoileus virginianus are basically cousins within the Capreolinae family. I am following your channel recently and its so interesting to confirm your concepts and tipps. Although hunting another deer species on another continent with a different habitat i can absoluty confirm almost everthing you are saying in your videos. When it comes to movement peaks of bucks, food preferences (clover and alfalfa) importance of water in dry areas, salt or mineral licks and so on - you are on spot with your tipps as they work the same way on roe deer. The only one difference is the rut and even there are some similarities. I have my own 520acres of hunting ground 4 Kilometers away from my house. In the last couple of years i saw less bucks, less quality bucks and they became more noctural. First i thought it was because of me and my brothers hunting pressure. Or the rising numbers of hikers and mountain bikers in the woods. But a professional hunter then told me to take a closer look at the doe population. This winter i am supposed to take out as many old does as possible. From what i have told him the amount of old and overaged does is too high. An indicator for too many and too old does is that they only have 1 fawn instead of 2 while there are plenty does visible at daylight. And their avarage weight has dropped over the past years. The strategy is now to convert the doe population to less old does and to less but younger and healthier dows in the age class of 3-4 years. Those dows will lead to better bucks. How do seasons in germany work? What weapon are you allowed to use and does germany allow out of country hunters to hunt? Do you have any public hunting land? Just curious. Very interesting comment.

@@greatlakespowerstrokefx4 I have leased 600 acres of forest land for 10 years from a private forest owner. This costs me 65.000€ for 10 years. I have to shoot a minimum of 20 roe deer, 6 red deer and i can shoot as many wild boar and predators as i want each year. My brother and a friend hunt with me and they also pitch in some money. So each year is like 2000€ per person. 48% of the forests are public/ state owned and 52% is private owned. On farmland : farmers can combine their land from minimum 200 acres up to 3000 acres to set up a hunting club. No matter if public land, private or hunting club : They give out leasing contracts for hunting grounds from 200 to 3000 acres. If you lease more than 3000 acres you have to hire a professional hunter / conservationist by law! Contract length can go from 1 and 3 years (small hunting grounds) up to 10 years (big hunting grounds with red stag or other bigger game that have a large home range) On public land you can also get weekend hunting tickets for various creatures or single tickets for trophy red stag for example. I can hunt on my lease all year. Wild boar season is from Januar till end of December. Roe Deer season is from May till January and Red Stags from August till December. Then there are also certain shooting times for birds, ducks and rabbits. Hunting is only allowed with adequate firearms. Bow hunting is discussed recently because game is more and more moving into urban areas where rifle hunting is too dangerous. Looks like bow hunting will be allowed only in these areas. It is very common for foreigners to hunt in Germany. Also germans like to hunt in eastern or western europe. I myself go on a hunting trip to Sweden every year for elk and bear. If have met american hunters on driven wild boar hunts in Germany also on public land. I also heard that there are some americans who love to get very rare trophies and therefore some come over to hunt the very rare and seldom black roe deer. I you would come and visit me for hunting i would have to buy a hunting insurance for my guest. I would also have to send a copy of your ID to our regional state hunting agency. Thats it.

My farm is a doe factory. In my experience October, November, and December I have multiple, multiple mature bucks show up to join resident bucks. I'm not disputing what you're saying, that has just been my experience in again country with multiple food plots.

Purchased 42 acres last summer... its clear cut and I only access 10 acres and have left the other alone besides trapping and putting out 25 chestnut and sawtooth trees. lots of pressure around the property and at the end of hunting season had many different bucks on camera. My 10 year old harvested 1 mature 8 point. I have 4 acres of Clover Planted and will be adding a 250 gallon water tank this weekend. I have hunted for 40 years and killed bucks in the 170" range but my first piece of property that I have ever owned... Hoping to make a honey hole for my 2 boys. Thanks for the great videos... Started hunting area with some friends last year. 1st comment to me was" kill does. We need to kill 20." They know the need due to studies but these hard heads won't kill them. I managed to take 2 does in 5 trips out. Seen more deer in 5 days of hunting than in my whole life. As far as I know the other guys hunting didn't take a one. My guess this year is we need to take 30 to make up for all the breading. Awesome hunting.

I own 80ac in Virginia I have a total of 5 does on my property. They raise their fawen in the sanctuary I made. I have nice mature bucks show every 3 years. I never seen buck beds on my property but I got pictures of them night and day. I have food plots and a lot of hard woods. I only have three to four stands to hunt from.

I cannot think of better advice for the small property owner than this. I have practiced this approach for years and have documented double the buck sightings per hour of sitting in December as I see October. The buck population in the area keeps falling and falling de to harvest but buck sightings on my property go up and up.

I like the suggestions but I'm in the Texas panhandle in the mesquite. 40 acres on an old gravel pit. Lots of chutes and hides. Its a very interesting place to hunt.

I’m lucky, my lease is 16 acres and I’ve had 3-5 times as many bucks as does on my property from when I put my cameras out in August until now. Mostly small stuff that I would like to see grow. I have about 4-5 decent 8 pts and 2 that are over 16” spread. I want to keep them on my property as much a possible. I only hunt the east side of the property and stay out of the overgrown hedge apple orchard area. I have an old 300 gallon water trough on the property. I filled that puppy to the brim back in September. I put one of my cameras there and wow what a sight. 7 out of 10 deer photographed are bucks. A lot of spikes to 6pts. It’s been an honor to see them and pass in hope they may survive the year. I am not afraid of taking 3+ does off my lease either. My goal is two does with a bow and 3 with a rifle. Our county is polluted with does.

My hunting area is mostly riparian woods on the edge of corn or milo fields. Do you have any advice on keeping does out when they have all the corn they could ever eat all summer long?

This was insightful not sure if we can do this with our property though. When I first started hunting the property we would see bucks (3-6 years old) pretty often we would see 3-4 real nice mature buckboard season but about 5 years ago the property was hit by logger who over logged taking out a lot of the acorn trees leaving the deer to depend mostly on the food plots and as soon as it starts to grow deer eat it down. At first it wasn’t a problem but fewer and fewer people started to hunt the area even some of our neighbors and more under growth started to grow so now we have sooo many does and fawns but only a handful of mature bucks. When season starts the bucks lay in the thick undergrowth and only move at night. Is there anything thing we can do

Hi Jeff, great video. My question is around deer hammering habitat improvements, will that cause the does to move in to soon. We should be closing very soon on a 60-acre parcel (so no history) and some of the food plots were huge (one is almost 5 acres), and we think we want to put them partially back into doe bedding and browse to create that depth for the bucks to bed behind, and then transform the remaining into long narrow transitional kill plots. If we plant with switchgrass, Red Osier, white/red pines, etc., what are the chances of that getting destroyed by does moving in too early? There are some decent ag fields near us in Clare County, Michigan, but still a lot of heavily wooded tracts with mix of hardwoods, conifer and softwoods as well. I put together a shopping cart earlier, and it was close to a $1000 on trees and shrubs (just a guess on quantity), not including any Switchgrass seed, which does not seem to be very cheap. Would love to have you out for a site visit, have sent a couple of emails.

Really appreciate the feedback! One of the reasons so much content is devoted to bucks, buck hunting and buck management, is because bucks are the lowest holebin the bucket. On publi or private land I could shoot a doe on just about any sit, any state I hunt in. It becomes easy. Doe movement is much, much easier to predict, with does having much smaller daily home ranges, being able to tolerate much higher levels of hunting pressure and requiring much lower levels of habitat quality. They feel the freezer at such an easier level than the oldest bucks in the neighborhood...not much strategy involved or to talk about or to create content for 🙂

I just spent 9 days in in a stand, in NW Illinois on 3 acres and never took a shot. Saw one spike buck and 2 yearlings. Land to lease here is way friggin out of my price range and public land is far to dangerous for my liking. That's the reality of most of the individuals I know that can hunt. Please understand that I am blessed to have 3 acres to hunt and am grateful for any meat in my freezer. Have a Blessed Christmas and a Prosperous 2021.

How do you get rid of the does? I have lots of them with fawn. I have lots of great cover and natural foraging plants and cacti.. also a mountain lion that’s living in my pop up blind 😂. He’s hard to hunt! So should I cut the feeders off until the fall?

great stuff for sure, but I have a question. At 5:08 you said if you are only hunting during the rut not using property to fullest. We hunt firearm first 2 weeks in MN and last 2 weeks in rotation of SD, WY, MT. In MN 1 buck per person per year. What are you suggesting?

I have 270 acres but 170 is ag maybe crp next year most of the timber is around the edge of the field I have 5 food plots. How much would it be for you to take a look at a map and make sure I am doing it right and if there is something else I can do?

Consistent Early October mock scrapes were what loaded my land with bigger bucks. And eliminated the older “dominant” does. Those 2 things brought more big mature bucks than anything

Do you think these same rules apply to those of us hunting suburban deer? I feel suburban bucks move much more and are far more sporadic in their patterns. Especially with people being outside more in the spring/summer? I REALLY like that picture at 4:15. That bucks is in the woods, but look at the town in the background, I hunt something like that.

Maybe some day Tyler...thanks for the suggestion! I don't use them...used to in MI but not legal where I am at in WI. You should check out some of the scientific studies on minerals...not much support for using them in terms of anything health related. I know several professional whitetail fenced operations that don't even use them. I'm with you there, Lucas. This "doe factory" talk seems to be geared to more northern agricultural areas or for purely trophy hunters and doesn't fit the mold of the southern pine thickets of south Alabama where many of us live and die by our food plots and supplemental feeding. Not to mention vistas of hundreds of yards spanning multiple hillsides and fields is non-existent here with timber giants owning most of the land. But we also manage our deer herd with a healthy annual doe harvest to where we have a fairly equal buck-to-doe ratio so over-browsing by does is not an issue as it is made out to be in the video.

Deer diets are different from location to location. So the habitats are going to be different. I am curious if the mock scrape sticks/vines would work in the south (NC). I would guess you would have to find an active area/trail. Do you put anything in the scape to attract them initially? I remember back in the 90's my brother came from Michigan and bought a 50lb bag of carrots and placed them in the woods where there was plenty of deer activity... Nothing. They rotted in place, not even a raccoon/possum... nothing. What works in Michigan may not work in a southern state.

So could you theoretically put alot of pressure/activity on your property during summer/early fall (june-september) to try to push deer off, then mimimize pressure in say mid septemeber and have the deer filter back in. I'm thinking mostly CRP land with a couple small corn/soybean plots central MN?

The bad thing os that doe family groups don't seem to mind the pressure...I would think with quality habitat and food it is nearly impossible let to push them off. Typically soybeans aren't really a good choice for most small parcels 🙂 corn isn't too bad...then later summer plantings can keep the does sway too. Does just take so much pressure...in particular dying the Summer.

My neighbor feeds the deer and doesn't hunt them, so in theory if I stop to feed the deer the does will start to go to that area and the bucks will stop going to that area as much? Would putting in a mock scrape when bucks are still in velvet will that pull them to my property be a good idea?

We need to kill several does this year, but I don’t have many on my property. There were 60 or more deer every night with about 10-15 being does on the plots early in the season but now in late season all we see are bucks. How can I create a small plot that will attract late season does?

How far from a property would think a muture buck would be calling home, when hes showing up early to mid November..? The same herd stays around. But around that time every year mature bucks start coming threw either that weve never seen or seen a few years prior.. For whatever reason all around that time I cant find sighn of them anywhere off the farm. Its in KY surrounded by 1000's of acres of National Forest..

Bucks travel just to find doe and I’m just wondering what would be the best hunting tactic on this, wait for the bucks to return home? Lol I've been doing things right all along. That's why I shoot big bucks and my neighbors do not. I don't feed deer in the spring and summer, but start around September with corn and protein. I plant my food plots around October 1st. That just depends on temperature and rain. I live in Arkansas in the mountains with limited open ground. I see bug bucks all season. I've been trying to get time to plant spring and summer plots and feed corn and protein, but this makes too much sense. I'll let my neighbors feed the doe in the spring and summer. Let's keep this quiet lol.

Jeff Appreciate the insight. I just picked up 8 acers north of Charlotte NC. I have about 7-10 doe hitting my food plot on a daily basis. Land is half cleared and half wooded. It also backs up to a hundred acer clear cut farm. What are your thoughts on doe count?

Thanks! That's a tough call....I maintain no Summer plots and typically have just a handful during the Summer...12-15 on 52 acres during the Fall. Does and fawns. I walked out a week ago and I had 15 take off while they were hitting the fresh young rye appearing at spring green up. Really take s good hard look at your October/November numbers...also making sure that you don't have too many during the Summer. I prefer just a handful during the Summer at most...

I'm 25 years old and I have shot two Boone and Crockett Bucks on public land in Wisconsin. Hunting private land with food plots is over rated unless you like killing does. All you need is water, bedding, and the patience to stay on stand all day. Hoping to be in the 200 inch club by 30.

Last year alls I got on trail cam was doe, fawns, & young bucks. 1 cam from may to late September I got 994 pics & i don't have any food plots. I shot a doe on bow openers & there was about 20 deer around. After that I didn't see or get pics of any deer until gun openers. The buck in my pic I got 10 minutes in to shooting time. I don't really care if I shoot bucks or doe, but I think I shouldn't shoot deer when there are so many deer around. After that day I got about 30 pics of buck & doe during the rut & the bucks were all nice bucks too.

I am trying to figure out how you influence deer to come to your food plot in the morning or during hunting hours as opposed to midnight. I hunt public land and bait with corn, but they only seem to come between 12am-3am, how is it possible to change the pattern?

Tacklebuster There’s an article about baiting deer with corn and it makes them become more nocturnal when you bait because they feel safer at night then in the day, I can’t remember where the article was but you can try and google it.

Boy that's a tough one Joe...so site specific! I think that also dep nds on ag or nig woods...type of habitat, food sources and climate. I've seen some really extreme cases including over 100 does and fawns during October/November on 300 acres...40 on 26 acres. Thank you very much too! How can I contact you. I manage/ own about 110 acres. I have counted up to 100 does and fawns during the summer. Tried to get rid of them by not planting until August to get late bloom but they always return. Some great bucks transit my property but they just do not stay. Only see bucks occasionally for rest and hit the bait for a quick meal then gone.

I have 15 acres and I live on it. I may never have mature bucks living here, it's just too close to my house. But I do have does. My strategy has been to leave the does alone, and only hunt the rut. I still treat it like the bucks are there. The mature bucks will come, but the pre-rut is my only window. I have killed 4 P&Y deer since 2001 including 2 in the last 2 years. I used to hunt a lot more. Now, I try to only hunt the edges of my 15 acres, and try not to disturb the does. They are the bait. I will try to make the property more buck friendly, but I don't think they will live here. I almost never even get them on a trailcam until the rut. But I've learned a lot from you. I've added water, I've added food. I still have improvements to make.

@steel salad how very unhelpful @mary riser Put in some good fall food plots. Good green plots, maybe some corn depending on how much room you have. Acorns aren’t the holy grail. They’re intermittent croppers that only last a short while, weeks at most for white oak acorns. I used to put in oak seedlings bc I was hoping to get more than the handful of oaks on my farm. The outdoor media places way too high a premium on oaks. If you want to plant trees: go with some chestnuts near bedding then pear and persimmon, maybe apples by your afternoon food spots. Chestnut Ridge in IL sells Dunstan Chestnut seed so for the price of one tree from Realtree’s Chestnut Hill, you could grow 30+ trees. All the ones I bought from RTCH at Walmart either broke at the trunk from the wind or established poorly - got better growth off a root sucker tubed the 2nd year for 2 years than I did with their 15gal tree in 3 years. Hallman Farms sells the best quality wildlife pears (25$ tree that’s grown 3-4 years in the nursery). Good luck!

I like to have the does especially during the rut , there is not a large number of does or deer anyway the does come in heat and the bucks know where they stay the bucks will come . I would never spend 10,000 to kill a mature buck especially when your neighbor could kill it first . I've shot 5 real nice mature bucks saw them one time and it's when I shot them never seen the same deer 2 years in a row . I think how you hunt depends on where you hunt I will agree on over pressuring your hunting spot I feel that is probably the number one problem for most hunters

For sure...was just out on two parcels in NY this week and their ash trees are just starting to die. First saw in MI on client parcels 9-10 years ago, and then in Oconto Falls WI a little after that. Now...it seems just about everywhere. The good thing is that if you cut it and keep it young before it does with regeneration, there is a chance it can make it thru the passing of the beetle. Will see!

I mean this 100 percent constructive. Im not trying to be a dick about you say this but you do that, just trying to learn. I saw some hinge cuts on this video as bedding areas were being mentioned. What made this property the right place for hinge cuts as opposed to them being a waste of time? Personally id have a hard time cutting down a perfectly good tree, im not a hinge cut lover, just trying to learn.

Extremely subjective....so many variables. Enough that they keep bucks from entering the land on a daily basis. On the northern MI property I had up to 260 acres and 20-25 does and fawns was too many. On the SW WI 195 acre ag land I hunted 25-30 does and fawns was about right. On the 52 acre parcel I show a lot...10-15 does and fawns every day, is about right. Depends on neighboring pressure, total cover, food sources, surrounding food sources, amount of daylight browse...all contribute to a balance for leaving enough room for bucks to relate closely to a consistent food source all hunting season long...
