I will add how nice this is looking. The raised beds are nice and your stone entrance came out very nice. My second suggestion in addition to my response to the urn and birdbath is to add two matching evergreens in the front - one on each side - in those cleared areas you already made. Perhaps boxwoods or whatever your preference. Evergreens are so important for winter interest and hardscapes. And like you mentioned, they rest your eye with all the color of your flowers. Containers would just add more hardscape.

I thought the same thing about the two cleared areas - some type of evergreen matching to flank the area. Keep the busyness of the colors down but leave a nice winter interest.

The stones look great! Definitely adds to the area! I think that the terracotta pot may look better in your landscape...I think because it is directly behind the birdbath you can no longer see the outline of the Birdbath.

I agree - maybe put the pot out in the landscape. The older I get I realize how hard I used to work. Can’t do it now, or maybe a better word is “won’t “. 😀

I thought the same thing. I think it's just because it's now behind the bird bath. I think it would look fine to have that spot be empty. Or perhaps one of those birds houses that's on a tall post so it would be skinny. But that may look like too much as well. Edit: Actually, looking at it again, if it were my space I'd likely remove the pot and put the fountain in its place. If you're growing something up the trellis I think it might look kind of crowded. I don't like having to brush up against plants and it looks like it kind of necks down the entrance. Also, i love the pavers there. Makes me realize it doesn't take a large patio to make little places to sit and enjoy

Good morning! Great job, your patio looks absolutely wonderful and will bring many years of enjoyment. TERRACOTTA POT IDEA: in my eyes this pot looks too new, it does seem to require more of a soft patina of the well loved English garden you are going for. So, instead of painting I suggest you AGE the pot using garden lime, which will change the orange to a beautiful aged soft white. There’s a great “how to” with pictures I found on the internet - not sure if I’m able to paste links in the comment here, but google “how to age terra cotta pots” and look for the blog “my 100 year old home”. I also suggest switching out the plant in the pot - maybe something pyramidal in shape, or a topiary? Perhaps a bamboo tent trellis? Another beautiful obelisk? Something else to ponder 😊

Beautiful patio! Love the way you efficiently removed the sod. I would suggest covering the clay pot with ceramics, then elevating the pot on a stand or pedestal, making it taller than the fountain which will identify it as the focal point of the garden. Beautiful job and inspirational. Thanks for all the great and informative videos.

I am a landscape designer. My opinion is to remove the birdbath. Its nice but not in this space. It detracts from the main focal point - the large urn. I love the scale of the urn and using it as a focal point is great.

I think I agree. The only other option would be to remove the large pot and bird bath and put a larger water feature where the big pot is. Both is definitely to much though.
@pansyface00

@@jenniferwolford4646 a large urn in the middle is traditional in potagers. I think its perfect as long as its elevated if needed and level. It is the focal point when approaching and entering.

I agree with the comments about leaving and even elevating the urn but moving the bird bath. The size of the urn is good, the bird bath is sweet and needs its own space. I wouldn’t paint the urn, just fill it with a glorious array of plants. Although if you really want the color changed, go for cement gray.

Wow. Looks great. Thanks for showing us how it's done. I like the big pot as a center point to start the exploration around the space. The birdbath is so lovely, I think it needs a space of its own. If the pot is terra cotta, remember painting it will change the porous nature of the clay. But if its plastic, no problem. If it's terra cotta, I like the previous suggestion of aging it with lime. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and seeing how this space changes.

The patio looks awesome. If it were my space, I wouldn’t leave it with just mulch. I would plant a variety of hostas, or other foliage plants creating a slope up to the raised beds which we all know will be loaded with flowers come Spring. The green foliage would provide a bridge between the lawn and the flowerbeds, and also soften the edges of the stone.

The pavers look great! I think once your flower beds come in the terra cotta pot won’t stand out and bother you. I don’t think I’d worry about painting it. One thing I think would make a big, beautiful impact is staining your raised flower bed boards. I recently watched Garden Answers montage of raised garden beds, and the dark stained garden beds were stunning! It really adds so much depth and makes everything just beautiful. We were so taken by it we recently stained our backyard fence a dark color. It was a huge job but the results are well worth it. I’m sure what ever you do will be wonderful.

Be careful of making the area to busy. You want that visually restful. I think painting the terra cotta urn to be in the color palate of the new stone patio is great idea, doesn’t need to match just same color range, lighter, darker. It’s a perfect size for center focal point-put it where birdbath is. Put birdbath off to the side nestled in your flower beds but still in view and audible. The new stone patio is awesome. Fantastic job!!!

It’s looking so good. If you paint the pot with primer and then there is a spray paint that looks like concrete, I believe it comes in different colors of concrete to match what you have. Also maybe just a row of something all green that would stay shorter like rosemary shape like a hedge would look nice on the outside of the beds? Hard work always pays off. I’m looking forward to getting out in my own beds. The older I get the more I dread those aches. My mother used to say, well it lets me know I’m still alive. 😂

Whew! The patio looks wonderful. I don’t envy you all that hard work - my back could not handle it these days… ☹️ Regarding the borders, I think they are too small and would widen them as you suggested. Then I’d fill them with a limited palette of minor bulbs such as Grecian Windflowers (anemone blanda), all blue or blue and white, for instance, with a few clusters of small yellow narcissus. Over top of them, I’d plant a low-growing ground cover, maybe one of the ajugas; something that will not compete with the backdrop of the colorful cutting which will soon fill your flower boxes. I think a non-flowering lambs ear would be beautiful there but I think your climate is too wet for that to stay healthy. The only terra cotta experience I’ve ever had is freezing and thawing which cracks them in my z6b garden but I agree, it looks a bit out of place. At the outer corners of the beds, I’d try either a pair of evergreen topiaries or something narrow but not too tall such as fine line buckthorn.

Beautiful! I'm envious of your ability to get outside and work. Even though it's 48 outside, my yard has 8 inches of snow on it, so my stone path will have to wait. I love the idea of 'resting your eye'. So important. Why dont you put some evergreens on the sides, either in a container or planted. Something woodsy, cedar possibly, birds would love it. I also think the birdbath could be moved elsewhere in your garden. The eye wants to pull in the pot/urn at the other end. I think there is paint that will age that, maybe even look like there is moss growing on it. If you wanted a more formal look, consider a stone paint. Then, put another evergreen in the urn/pot. My mind sees that pulling everything together, with a few places to rest the eye. It's going to be lovely, Danielle, whatever you decide to do!

I can see two diagonal raised beds going in to surround the stone patio. I don’t think the mulched area needs any flowers, but maybe some clover as a ground cover. It would attract pollinators, occupy the soil, and bring some more green to the garden. I agree that the bird bath needs to be moved, though. It looks like it’s in the way sitting in the middle of your path. Instead, I would add an additional bird bath and put each in the middle of the mulch triangles, now clover in this scenario. Then, they are also tucked away in their own corners surrounded by flowerbeds instead of layered over the centerpiece urn. You can use spray paint to paint the terra cotta a more neutral stone color, or wait to see how it matches with the flora you plant in the garden.

Removing sod by hand is a heck of a job in and of itself. So, admiring what you did there alone. I have these exact stones, a Lowe’s purchase, and have tried to lay them in a pattern that matches the pattern in the stones. I quickly gave up because they’re so darn heavy and cumbersome. I eventually moved them to make them a small footpath through a bed because between the lines on top, and the pattern of the shapes, it was impossible for me.

Maybe a lime wash effect on the terra cotta would make it look aged and blend in a little better. I have not had a lot of luck with getting paint to stick to terra cotta long term. Water inside the pot seems to make it peel on the outside. Or maybe a grey wood stain would work if you want it to look like stone. I have seen Laura from Gardenanswer use wood stain on concrete pieces maybe it would work on terra cotta.

Nicely done! The patio area looks fabulous. I think the shape you created looks so good with the irregular stone and the edge it created. Some additions I would consider: Painting the terra cotta container black so it doesn’t stand out but remains as a shape in that space? You know how black gets lost in the landscape? Also you have a great opportunity to put small ground covers in this patio area. Any of those step ables would work. Lastly I can see upright evergreens in the corners to create that ‘walled in’ feeling that you mentioned. The shape of Graham Blandy Boxwood is what I picture there. I have had one in my garden for years and transplanted it once and it looks great. It will also go along with the English Garden look you like. Love your videos! I am a landscape designer that had to quit working during Covid. I have been learning about growing annuals for cutting to keep me busy and maybe turn into my next gig. Thanks for all your help and inspiration.

think you do a really beautiful design, it looks very natural. I would live with the two sides barren for now, you can always add later

Beautiful outline with the stone and that's not easy. I got the same stone to make a short walk from sidewalk to my greenhouse to the garden gate. I only had about 8 of those rocks and it took me a long time to figure out how they fit. I had to youtube it too!

Great job! I was considering removing sod on side of my house. You made it look easy!! Maybe paint the flower pot the color of your chairs?
