I like to think one of the gnomes chasing the giant is a bit flatter than the rest.

You deserve so many more subscribers and views, man. Your map making alone is superb, and your DM advice and such is top tier but the best part of your videos is definitely how freakin' positive you always are!

Your videos really helped me get over the scary part of D&D as a very new baby DM!! The way you describe things really break it down for me and I couldn’t be more thankful that your videos exist!!

I think another way encounters can be made interesting is with permanence, if I were to kill a gaggle of goblins on my way to another village, I'd probably be considered a helper and people would probably be a bit more open to me if said goblins have been a menace, conversely, if I encounter a goblin cave later on, they might be the same goblin tribe I killed from, and so they may petition me to not murder them all (as has been clear I can do with their best warriors in their raiding party) and to have their wares in offering. Beating up some guards who are extorting from a caravaneer could lead to a bounty or to respect from the guard captain depending on if they are to be an antagonist or a helpful NPC.

Beautiful drawings and wonderful ideas! I think the best travel encounter I've ever run was "Black Arrows" from Lost Mines of Phandelver. It gives the players a chance to see the ambush coming and take a proactive step in the action! I'd love to here you talk about how you come up with a good "spin" on a classic encounter, such as the Iron Brewhaha example. What components make for a good spin and what is the process for writing them?

Thanks dude! Not sure if I have a solid process for coming up with encounters yet. Something I should think about and figure out how to articulate. For me, spinning stuff just means flipping expectations of the players. That can be done by switching who is the hero and the villain in the situation, adding humor to more grim encounters, or mashing together multiple ideas so they aren't as noticeable. Should probably come up with a good list of these things to make it easier!

@@JPCoovert Heck yeah! I often find that my "taste" or "instinct" is just me applying rules and criteria that I haven't articulated yet!

I go into these fun things often. I do a lot of instructional for new DM's / GM's and designers/creators. You are not far off from the questions that are asked often and processes of thought tied to them. That's how solutions begin. Have fun creating and discussing the games we love.
