To add to these, I would suggest doing straight up or straight down (or both) "explosions". To get fireballs that aren't going up or down in the frame. Also, straight 'splosion elements are fun and all. But I would also love to see these powder explosions in shots with models. So the fireballs can interact with the structures and move past them. Especially doing a few shots with a street tilted on its side like they did for the first Independence Day explosions.

Love an explosion, nicely done guys. I don't think it was mentioned but the other weirdly explosive thing is flour. Flour mills have been known to explode because of a spark igniting the air. Mind yourselves when baking!

Lol...I did consider demonstrating flour and calling it ‘The great British Blast off!’. Yes flour and as mentioned elsewhere in the comments, coffee creamer powder works well. Both these materials react very similar to Lycopodium powder...but Lycopodium tends to burn a little brighter and more efficiently/ cleaner.

Reckon you could do some "zero g" explosion elements? Namely with the explosive hung above the camera which is facing upwards, a sheet of lexan between them so you get a nice fireball moving towards the camera, good for spaceship explosions.

Great video, guys! Are these powders specifically made for the effects industry, or are they just powders that have been found to work well? I'm curious if any super fine grain powder would work?
@jp-incamera
@jp-incamera 3 жыл бұрын
With the exception of the Red Gum and Lycopodium powder, we used materials usually intended for other things in our demo. As mentioned in the comments a similar result can be obtained by using coffee creamer powder or fine cooking flour. Many fine grain powders can work as the ‘fuel’, we just demonstrated the main ones we prefer (and that seem to photograph the best). If doing your own tests, please be sure to do outside and away from flammable objects and have a way of remote ignition like we set up, otherwise you may loose eyebrows :)

Should we check with local and State laws when doing pyrotechnics and if we need permits for such effects? Thanks.
@jp-incamera
@jp-incamera 3 жыл бұрын
Always check laws regarding the use and procurement of pyrotechnic materials. Most of the materials considered as ‘controlled substances’ used for pyrotechnics are limited to separate classification and are therefore obtained through licence restricted sale in some shape or form worldwide. When in doubt, contact a licensed effects/ pyrotechnic company to have a licensed (and insured) professional to advise and carry out the effect for you. Whenever we feature anything pyro related in our episodes, we are very careful as to what content we disclose (and don’t disclose). We are aware that our audience is worldwide and that laws differ from country to country. Whenever we disclose the materials used in a DIY context, we make sure that they are not ‘controlled’ or ‘hazardous’ substances per say, but rather talk through the more freely available (unrestricted) ingredients that can be used in an effect, that if carried out with common sense and basic precautions, can be perfectly safe.

Cool video. Idk but I think CG explosions / fireballs look way more impressiv and full. It just feels more like a movie, when the explosion is CG. I think the major downside of filming these elements on a bluescreen is this little tiny edge you get and it look a bit flat. With CG you have HDRIS and more Lighting options to really let the light shine through the volume and exactly match the light.
@jp-incamera
@jp-incamera 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a fair comment, CG explosion sims in Houdini for example can be truly excellent. However I would always say that studying or creating the real thing (even on a smaller scale) can help massively improve the look of a sim, by studying real world reference. CG explosions and fire have come a long way, but sometimes there is a temptation to add much more exposure detail to them in comp...looking a bit too much like the camera is capturing a ‘predicted’ or impossible exposure.
@TheEplestugas
@TheEplestugas 3 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I think a lot of explosions in movies nowadays look painfully CG. The Smoke is just way to fluffy and it lacks the detail and randomness of a real explosion.
@jamescarter3196
@jamescarter3196 3 жыл бұрын
“It feels more like a movie”- what does that even mean? It isn’t ‘better’ when something looks so artificial that you immediately know it’s totally fake. That’s the opposite goal of most special effects.
