In this video Corin demonstrates how to propagate Japanese Maples using air layering. Air laying is a process that involves stripping the bark from a section of trunk and enclose the wound in sphagnum moss. Corin uses the split method & tries out the new air layering pods.
In around 10 weeks time the layer will be cut from the parent to create a new tree.

This is a really good video on air layering, I only discovered air layering a few weeks ago so have tried it on an ash tree that’s growing through some slabs out the way at work, just tried it with some cheap garden wire a plastic bag and some moss I raked out the grass. Also pretty chuffed to find you are only a 30 minute drive away so I will have to get over with some pocket money at some point.

You can wet the trunk above the cut before you use rooting hormone and it will stick. The roots usually start above the top cut, I try an mount the moss just slightly above the bottom cut and go up the trunk a little bit more just in case. You get good results regardless though. 👍

Interestingly, I was out in the yard air layering some J. maples this morning when a passing rain chased me in the house. So I decided to watch your new video-on air layering. You do it just like I have been for years! Next I need to ground layer an elm to get rid of a root that has grown into a massive surface feature. I also have a couple zelkovas that need a similar treatment and a Seju elm I got from your friend Bill V. that has a branch that I want to remove. Like you we had a lot of late frosts and cool spring so everything has been set back a few weeks. Another method is to use small butter dish with removable lid. Cut a notch, put in the moss, and pop on the lid. Fast and easy and it makes it very convenient to pop off the lid and examine the layer for new roots.

its funny that also Peter from herons bonsai did not exactly know why air layering works as he used kind of the same, wrong, explanation as here. So for everyone interested: By removing the bark of trees, but leaving the sapwood underneath intact, the water from the roots can still reach the above, as it is transported in the sapwood. The clue however is that the products of photosynthesis, transported in the bark, do not reach the roots anymore. This causes the tree to produce new roots above the removed patch of bark.

You are correct, that is a more scientific explanation. I'm well aware of, but this video is aimed at beginners and more to show the practical aspects of Air layering rather than in depth discussion of plant cells and their function.

Another clearly described video. Do you not scrape the wound to remove any trace of cambium? Your method clearly works if you are getting 100% success.

I’ve always used a paste or gel of rooting hormones. Seems not a lot of powder remains in place when applied dry. Seems to work here though.

I bought a small set from Amazon which had three different sizes in the pack plus cable ties and a spouted bottle which makes watering very easy. I’m trialling the medium size on an azalea at the moment. It was certainly easier to put on in a small space than a split pot or just a plastic wrap. Good to see Corin trialling the larger sizes too 👍

I wonder about the roots on air-layered trees as many maples are grafted to stronger root stock. Would the air-layered tree have weaker root stock than let's say, a Koto-Hime that has been grafted?
@greenwoodbonsaistudio
@greenwoodbonsaistudio 6 ай бұрын
Yes, often they are grafted to produce stronger growing plants.

Good morning. Thanks for sharing another new video. In layering techniques, can another material be used as a medium for the development of roots such as peat, cococo fiber or akadama 100 × 100? Thanks Greetings and until the next video👍😄

I can understand the need for clean instrument when grafting, but with airlayering the next step after stripping the bark is sticking some compost or sphagnum moss onto the wound, so I don't usually bother. But I'm not saying that I'm 100% right And about watering: I find that the sap from the tree keeps the moss quite moist, so I seal mine completely and don't worry about rehydrating them. But again, my experience is very limited

Awesome video. I'm very interested in starting my first air layers on acer circinatum but the new growth isn't out and hardened off yet. Do I have to wait until the growth is hardened off? It's a late cold season for us and the buds are so close to popping I'm dying to try

Can one cut TOO deep? I just lost 8' of a crabapple on a trunk air layer. 24 hours later it was drooping. As I knew I'll be doing thick trunk air-layers this year I bought a cordless sawzall for the thick bark. (Knife clean up of rooting line).
