Have used that style of chain coupler on many vacuum pumps and clutch cable hoists. They are reliable and relatively quiet, much better choice. might want to add a catch pan/pad for oil. running dry is their big weakness. I love how you two show no fear in tackling projects. Nice work on the cabinets.

You guys are sort of living my dream. I congratulate you on that. I have a few little suggestions that you may want to consider. First, hand grinding may not have been the best way to taper your motor shaft. If you had let your local machine shop cut an adapter on a lathe, then concentricity would probably have been better. I do need to compliment you on the quality of your hand craftsmanship though. It is much better than most people are capable of. Second, there is a type of multi-piece shaft coupling with a rubber spider in the middle that is commonly used in industrial applications. They are less alignment sensitive compared to most other options. One of them would probably run more quietly than your chain coupling & also make motor removal easier when you need to do maintenance. All brush motors will eventually need maintenance. The brushes themselves are a wear item, like tires on a car. Third, the anchor swivel should not be connected directly to the anchor shank. You should have a shackle & at least 1 or two chain links between them. Otherwise, if the anchor is firmly set & a tide change causes a side load on the anchor, the yoke of the swivel can be pried apart. The swivels are rated for straight pull only, not side loads. The bowl side of the shackle should be in the shank of the anchor, so that it can swing from side to side. That is the purpose for the bowl of the anchor shackle being shaped the way that it is. May you find fair winds

Great video and conversion of your drawer to a better storage shelving and great job on the engine. One word of suggestion. Please, please, please add some links of chain in between your Rocna and your swivel. The anchor will set in deep and if you have a tidal swing or wind shift you'll pivot on that swivel and blow the pin apart. Just google swivel failures. Looking forward to more videos and seeing you guys cruising.

As an owner of a slightly elderly 36 footer here in Britain I really admire all the work you've done to get your boat seaworthy. You have been both so energetic and innovative that I have really been struck by you both. I am particularly impressed by the fact that you are both young but you have tackled some pretty significant projects especially rebuilding the floors I am always worried that young people these days don't pick up tools, repair things, renovate, modify , be constructive, get their hands dirty. Well done! You deserve to succeed with your dreams Just take care of yourselves and UMA Happy sailing Alex

Hi again! I was watching the episodes about the motor instalation again! I have to say I so much admire your work and skils it is worth a lot of love so I send you mine!. I can tell you that I have now began my own project. I am refitting an Amel 52. Most of the boat is finished but I am an stubard old fart so I rip the motor out to do a tottal renovation on it. It is an Volvo D2.75 a real work horse. and it didn't realy needed the repare but what the heck, when I still was on the hard I decided to change all barings and bushing and also new spreaders. No I am not going electric because the engine is just fine and I am planing for longer trips next year, So perhaps we meet out on the ocean one day, The sailing community is rather small so it seams like people meet in different places all the time. I will buy you a bear if we meet out there! Love and light from the old fart in Sweden :D

Random thought. If the chain becomes problematic down the road, another option would be a CV axle similar to what would you would find on a small front wheel drive car. It'll be quiet and you won't have to worry about perfectly aligning the motor and trans each time to pull the motor or worry about it vibrating/shaking lose on passage and cause an issue. If it breaks in a undeveloped country, I think your odds of finding an axle are easier than finding a chain....thinking out loud. You guys are doing great!

What a difference in rotational noise! It takes energy to create noise so now you've increased your run time.....good show Dan! I would have used an elastomer based coupling but it looks like you've aligned those shafts well and found a workable solution. I'm not used to seeing girls using routers and rotary hand saws, so I was impressed when Kika was using them like a pro. And I now see she is also an excellent free-hand graphical artist! Thanks man! Yes, Tesla is on our radar. We have a lot of tweeks and upgrades to make on our system. But so far, it works fine for our needs. More batteries and a better cooling system at the top of the list. Maybe converting to direct drive or belt might help squeeze some more efficiency out of it. But so far we just sail everywhere and use the motor to anchor.
