Shaper Origin is an amazing tool for both prototyping and small production batches. It is reliable and fun to use. I use it for production of single and double skipole holders for OKOsystematrix ski organiser which I manufacture in LAAX Switzerland.
Shaper Origin
Shaper Origin helped me to understand feeds and speeds needed for bamboo cutting pretty fast. The simpliest way to describe my way of using it is:
⚙️ go as fast as possible while Shaper Origin still moves smooth without jitter ⚙️
When dust flies in the air you are not on a good track. You want tiny chips that land on your table or in your vacuum system. My machine is connected to a Festool portable vacuum cleaner and it works pretty good if a pocket between your bit it is kept empty. With Shaper Origin you can change all variables really fast. No need to go to a computer like with a CNC. Because of that my learning curve was super steep eventho I am a beginner user of CNCs and CNClike machinery.
Cutting bits
I use italian cutting bits made by a brand called Fraiser. I chose and ordered them after a short google search and I do not regret. Good value, fast shipping. I can't compare to anything else but honestly, for around 35 bucks including shipping and import taxes to Switzerland for one bit I have no problem. I will keep on using them. They only go blunt because of my learning mistakes. Once you dial speed&feed right they seem to cut bamboo forever without going blunt or even dirty. Some valuable tip for those who are into bamboo cutting both with CNCs or hand machinery. Use straight bits. Yes, straight bits. Forget any fancy stuff. If you dont believe me, look at my product.
These are Fraiser bit types I use and highly recommend for cutting bamboo boards of 12mm depth
Main cutting
Straight router bit, long series
Diameter 6 / Length 25 / Shank 8
3 passes: 4mm+4mm+5mm
Logo cutting
Straight router bit, short series Diameter 3 / Length 8 / Shank 8
Helix, and yes, I cut a 12mm board with a 8mm long tool and it works perfect with this Fraiser tool
Cleaning bits
After dozens of hours of work with Shaper and lots of trial and errror I learned pretty well how to clean bits. A short video of my way of cleaning them is coming sometimes in the future for sure because dirty bits = shitty cuts and their unnecessary early dead.
Thanx
All this is possible only because of Enlain and Urs Welti who lets me share his workspace and many tools. You are a friend a mentor to me 🙏🏻 Thank you so much Urs 🙏🏻
