Creating your own wall art with drywall compound is not only easy, but really fun! The ready-mixed drywall is so easy to work with and creates gorgeous wall décor. This project only needs a few basic supplies.
I painted over an old canvas that I know I'm never going to hang again. Rather than keeping it in storage, it got upcycled. I primed and painted over the original art, trying to achieve a subtle ombre effect. Once that's done, the real fun begins. There's no special technique, just spread the compound with a spatula (I picked mine up at the Dollar Tree), until you are happy with the result. If you don't like a section, just go over it again. Drywall compound gives you plenty of working time. Then let it dry.
I chose drywall compound over spackle for a few reasons:
- Cost. Compound is much cheaper
- Size of project. Spackle was created for small patch jobs, so it can create cracks on a large project like wall art
- Easy of use. Compound is much smoother and softer. It's easier to spread it over large areas.
To dress up the project, Ralph built a wood frame out of scrap wood that we picked up a Habitat ReStore. And I spray painted it with left over gold paint. Like really left over, from my brother's garage that we found when he was moving out. Even he doesn't know how old it is. But it turned out perfect.
My new DIY wall art hangs as the backdrop to my crafting table. I love how it turned out, it really is a designer look on a DIY budget. I got to upcycle and create decor that perfectly matches my space.
