Many aircraft builders would love to have a workshop and hangar located on their favorite airstrip. This would be a place to build without distraction and then fly when the project is completed. This short video shows a workshop-hangar one builder has created on a small rural airstrip that is off-grid from the utilities and didn't cost a fortune to build. This can serve as an example of how to create your own man cave hangar away from the bustle of the world!

Beautiful set-up! Love how innovative and creative he is. The electric company quoted him a price, he said "nahh I'll do it cheaper", and ended up making his workshop self-sustaining! I'm glad he enjoys aviation because I can tell he is making the world a better place because of it.

I installed a small 500w solar panel system running for very cheap at my remote hangar in Kansas. It works much more reliably than the generators the other folks use and it doesn't make any noise. My system is much smaller, but it runs a drill press, radio, small compressor and runs my 28v LED lighting system for at least 6hrs. The panels connect to the batteries with a MPPT controller, then the battery connects to a 5kw inverter which runs all the 120v equipment.

I would have insulated the building before anything. It's cooler in the summer and easier to heat upon the winter. And I would have asked the utility people could I do the trenching to save cost. Solar is just constant maintenance. Nothing like power for 24/7.

I thought this was about putting up the building, Looks like he got an agricultural contractor to do it, but no costs mentioned anywhere so who knows whether its affordable or not.

This is just the best. I would never go home. I wonder if he can find a way to counter balance that hangar door so he doesn't have to use such a big drive motor...

I was interested in this video until I heard he was keeping the location a secret, then I was very interested!! It took nearly 20 minutes to find the exact location of his secret man cave. I won't divulge it here, but it reminds me of sweet, sweet Belgium.

No ... they are sealed, correctly spaced, appropriately sized, charge rate limited and designed for the purpose. If I had used a mixture of types (or maybe leftovers from a 787 project ;) ) then there could be heat issues with charging asymmetry.

Dont have a name - it was subcontracted by builder - but most commercial building door companies are familar with this size - tell them what width you need and start from there.

Can you at least say what state this is in? It seems to be the USA, because of the electrical outlets configuration, in spite of the British accent.

Most builders complete their projects quicker when the project is at home because they can spend that “commute time” working in the garage, basement, or other workshop, instead of driving. Working at home isn’t distracting if you structure your schedule so you just don’t answer the phone or the doorbell when in “the factory,” and everyone else in the house knows not to interrupt you during those times. Also, you can pop into the workshop and take a measurement, verify something, or do a half-hour task while waiting for dinner to cook, etc. The hangar you feature is fine for final assembly, painting, and keeping the finished aircraft in, but working at home, if you have suitable space, is usually more productive.

I wonder if you can build during winter: virtually no sun power, so batteries may take weeks or even months to get charged. Depends of course where you are. And what about any heating? Or vandalism and robbery (of your exposed solar panels or worse): are you well insured? At remote locations this might be expensive. But if it serves you well: be happy, don't worry. And success with your repli tiger moth.
@steveukman
@steveukman 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, on a sunny winter day they charge really quickly. I am close to the 44th parallel, so do not have months of darkness ;) The "45 mins of continuous use on a 90 minute charge time" rule works pretty well, even in winter. Nobody uses big tools continuously, so I have never run out of power. Rechargeable tools also help even out the power demands. The biggest winter problem so far has been snow drifts limiting access to the building. I just plan my projects to take care of smaller assemblies, wiring, software &c. in the winter.
