Combat Story

Күн бұрын

Today we have a special Combat Story that takes us from commanding in bloody fighting in Vietnam to some of the seminal moments in our military’s Special Operations history, all courtesy of retired colonel Keith Nightingale.
Keith served two tours in Vietnam, one as an adviser to the Vietnamese where he learned jungle warfare from one of the most interesting and lethal characters in country, followed by taking command of an infantry company in the 101st that had just been wiped out, literally, hours earlier.
Keith was a founding member of the 1st Ranger Battalion when it was created by Gen Creighton Abrams in 1974-later commanding both that battalion and the Ranger brigade. He then gives us a fly on the wall perspective of the Desert One catastrophe and the subsequent birth and creation of what we know today as JSOC, to include why we have DIA, 160th, Delta and more.
We even touch on Keith’s time as the DoD lead tracking down none other than the Drug Kingpin Pablo Escobar.
Keith has gone on to write three books, “Just Another Day in Vietnam”, “Phoenix Rising: From the Ashes of Desert One to the Rebirth of U.S. Special Operations,” and “A Soldier Looks Back: Memories and Reflections of a Combat Veteran, from Normandy to Afghanistan.”
This was a memorable Combat Story that gives us a look inside some of the most significant moments that created the modern US military we all know and love today.

Rangers lead the way! I'd of killed to of been at 1/75. Instead stuck at 3/75. 4ooooooooorrrrrrrreverrrrrrrrr.... Columbus GA. Sucks donkey dick and maybe be the oddest place on earth with its weather. It's the hottest place on earth. The humidity is 1,000% but oddly in the winter it's cold as balls. It's just hell on earth there. Oh and the bars suck. The town sucks.. but other than that. It was the greatest and best time of my life hated to have to leave in 2013. But to that I don't know about you there 1/75 good you imagine or want to ve in now with all of this woke bs. He'll the covid jab would have gotten me kicked out. There's poor bastards that refused and got dishonorable discharge is complete bs. RLTW 3/75

The cool thing about 75th Ranger regiment is the history that they created behind it. I mean it goes all the way back to the Swamp Fox Francis Scott Marion. during rip what is now known as rasp, we were tested on all of that history and I don't know how many times a day we had to do the Ranger Creed. but that Creed is embedded in your brain from the start of it. from Ranger hold, through rip or rasp, to the day-to-day goings on. that Ranger Creed is just instilled in your brain. this is such a cool interview to listen to. the guy who actually started it up. absolutely loving this one as I've Loved all of your interviews, this one obviously hits a little more home to a guy like me, who's an old batt boy. I've read and listened to so many stories of desert one Eagle Claw and it was just such a s*** show debacle. the first joint Special Operations mission that went to hell in a handbag when an Iranian tour bus pulls up to them out in the middle of a desert. It went disastrously downhill from then on. Awesome interview as always. RLTW 3/75

Do not know how I missed/over looked this interview for 8 months. On point Ryan. I loved this one. Partly because I lived some of it. From an Air Force SO perspective Keith was not wrong. We were more like the embedded Air National Guard as far a resources, funding and people power. Most of us worked our "Regular" job and did weekend warrior with SO. We wore so many patches that we would wear the velcro out. When the 1rst SOS moved from Kadena to Clark in the early 80s it was a cluster. When Keith said that SOW was in it for the money he wasn't lying. Our tasking was for man power like the other branches, but we were mostly tasked for assets that were very expensive to procure, allocate, operate and maintain. Not to mention the rivalry between SAC and MAC and who would have operational control. Hanger Queens was putting it mildly. We would have cannibalized and recycled prop wash if we could have figured out how to can it.

Ryan, another great one! I love and hate ones like these. Love to watch them and hate that they aren’t longer. I have a special place in my heart for Vietnam Veterans and have studied the war since I was a kid. Being a Desert 1 Vet, made it that much better with the Colonel having served in that theater as well. Awesome stuff and can’t wait for the next amazing set. Appreciate y’all! 💯🇺🇸

Hey Ryan, love what you’re doing with Combat Story. I’m also fascinated by these stories. One question: is there any reason why you limit these episodes to about 2 hours? I feel like many of your guests should have episodes that are 4-6+ hours long so that they have enough time to go into detail on all of their stories and lessons learned. If it’s a concern about people’s attention spans, Jocko and The Shawn Ryan Show have many episodes that are 6+ hours long and are super successful. Keep up the good work!

I had a strange education while in USARSO getting to know authority and knowledge from a 2 star command and my own battalion staff. I thrive on this sort of 'solve the problem' story telling and see this man's legacy in my entire military memory. Please come back so we might gain the benefits of your interview once more😊

I can't help but think that E/2/13 Black Sheep, was a result of this man's lineage. LTC Kennedy and his cadre showed me the methods and reasons for my indoctrination. Thank you Sir, a legacy well done. Little wonder, I ended up in Panamá with the Nation Builder's and saw the NAV course for Jungle Expert, the Night Stalker's Det., and all the orchestra of JSOC.
