Being myself drums teacher, and following TRJ for many years, He's an amazing player, he influenced me, him and many others. For sure I understand guys here who didn't appreciate the "lesson". I advice his DVD "pure energy". There are great exercices for warming up, creativity, moeller technic, etc ... This video here is not for beginners, but there are many things to get for each of us. I understand him when he can't really explain his technique about double pedals technic, or foot technic. Sure, it's good to practice differents technic, (slide, heel toe ...) but feeling with your drums, bass drums... count a lot in execution. The feeling with your drums comes with practising, and playing. About dynamics, i understand him too, you can do so many exercices... but as he said, play on differents music styles is good, he's right. I think personally, that dynamic can be improved if you listen and adapt your play to be coherent with rest of your band. If you really want to understand what he's playing, if you have a teach, show him that, and discuss about that !

i've been a fan for a loooong time! I remember when Common Ground first came out, as well as shedding with him in NC. This dude is literally the Prodigy! He's not making it up, i totally understand why he can't fully explain it, b/c he was a phenomenon! My advice would be that Exposure Expands You! As you expand your musical vocabulary your musical language increase. There's many languages, and even more dialects within that language. So pack your bags and travel my fellow drummers!!

The thing I love about this dudes playing is that even though it's mind blowing, it's never incomprehensible IMO. He's doing crazy stuff but he does stuff or does it in a way that you can almost always hear exactly what he's doing, you just can't believe he's doing it lol I'm sure the sound of his kit could be part of it. Everything sounds very sharp

Some of his exercises will help my weak and lazy left hand and my right hand is getting better at independence.Thanks Tony and Drumeo.
@legacyShredder1
@legacyShredder1 3 жыл бұрын
@@markdemell3717 Part of what makes the left hand feel weak is due to over gripping and over powering everything which causes fatigue and bad time, resulting in a weakness feeling. Take a week and play everything left hand lead while making an attempt to play extremely relaxed. Hammer out several hours of rudiments and basic pocket. Also part of the problem is the right hand when it's not used to following the left. A little bit of time spent with a relaxed left hand lead will fix all of that.

@@markdemell3717 I was getting super fed up with my left hand. I started with traditional grip, and I felt like a newborn child when trying to teach myself matched grip. After a while it was getting better, but it wasn't until I realized I was gripping the living hell out of the stick did everything completely change.

So many people complaining about Tony Royster Jr, "man give us some exercices pls". As music, drum can't be learned only by repeating some patterns like a machine. You need to develop your groove, your ear, and your feelings about the groove to be able to do what this drummer here, Tony, does : listening to his heart, and make his drum kit sounds like GOD. Drum is 20% about technic, the rest is about feelings. Feel the rythm, feel the music, release your inner expression. Keep that in mind about learning drumming, and stop complaining because you can't be as good as Tony Royster Jr. SEE YA

Yes but if u have examples it's easy to make your own variation and put your own signature on it. I buy books and take one example and make a bunch of variations of it. It works great for creativity. If gives u the building block and then u break it up and build.
