Like all your videos, Mike, this one is comprehensive and easy to follow. I loved the different effect chain options that you went through. Again, you never cut corners and always make comparing and contrasting of various ideas super easy to follow. One request I would like to make (because I almost never see it in youTube videos) is treatment of nylon stringed guitars, particularly when one is playing solo chord melodies. Just about every video I've ever seen on "recording acoustic guitar" only focuses on steel stringed instruments. Naturally the nylon world and the steel world are very different places. As a general rule, solo chord-melody nylon string players are looking for a very full, rich and warm sound (often the polar opposite of the goals of playing in steel). For myself, my nylon mixes inevitably come out not "sounding like a nylon stringed guitar" but rather "like a recording of a nylon stringed guitar". That is, some small amount of "electrification" or "computerization" always seems to creep into the mix. While I am sure EQ's and compression ... and perhaps a hint of reverb could enhance even a "nylon" recording, I think these FX must be used with extreme caution and restraint. As an example of a really nice nylon tone, please check out "Oblivian" by Russian guitarist Nadia Kossinskaja here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKqWqrqctMy4mWQ.html I can really hear the warmth coming from her instrument. It's that tone I would love to learn how to capture. This particular piece is "classical style" but the same tone would be nice for anyone playing stand-alone nylon string pieces. I know she uses "a pair of Rode NT5's ( Bridge and 14 fret) und a Sennheiser MK 4". (I know because she told me when I wrote and asked)... but other than that I know nothing else of her recording/mixing techniques. The point is, would you consider doing a video focusing on getting full and rich mixes from a solo nylon stringed instrument? Your same methodical treatment would be very helpful for us "nylon string lovers". Thanks!

You are so right. As it happens, I'd just bought a new nylon string a couple 0f months back, and have been recording a lot with it. I've often found myself using the same positions (out of habit) as steel strings, with poor to mediocre results. I feel that pure classical recordings make much more use of the room sounds. Now of course those players use nails unlike me, as I use my finger pads - so the results would be incredibly different. I also feel like the processing stage is quite different. IMHO, compression can entirely destroy solo nylon string performances, which are generally very dynamic. I am by no means an expert, but I think I'd like to make a video to at least document what I discovered so far. Thanks for the inspiration :)

@@CreativeSauce Hey Mike. Thank you for your kind reply. Like you, I also use my finger pads. This was a conscious decision on my part when I decided to pick up fingerstyle about 4 years ago, as I love the sound. As you put it "IMHO", nails sound too bright. If I wanted bright, I would go with steel strings and plastic picks. I listen to "finger pad players" like Andrew York and am convinced that is the way to go (for me). If for no other reason than picks and nails physically separate us from the instrument, whereas there is a direction connection to our instrument when we are actually touching the strings with the right hand. I like to call it "caressing the lady". Hee hee. 😇 I will really look forward to seeing what you come up with for a video on the subject. I am sure you will not disappoint. I also agree with you (in theory) about compression on nylon instruments. I say "in theory" because I've never tried it... due to lack of understanding of compression in general (until watching your video on the subject). When I find notes that are too loud or too soft, I edit them one at a time directly with Melodyne (but try to keep that also to a bare minimum). I do think a little EQ is almost always necessary with any type of acoustic guitar, as the recording process itself seems to introduce "artifacts" that I don't hear in "live playing"... We need a way to address those "wonky frequencies".... But once again, all things in moderation. By the way, I have some nice arrangements (not original tunes) that I have entered into Guitar Pro 7 specifically for "finger-pad fingerstyle" and have those arrangements both in GP7 format and (naturally) tab/score form. Let me know if you would like me to send you a couple of them. I'll watch for that video! Cheers, RJ

So I took notes: high pass filter on low frequencyies, wide Q cut most all of the frequencies in the entire midrange, subtle cut the entire range of high frequencies, and add compressors and reverb.

These are awesome tips! Feels like the holy grail of brilliant sounding guitars finally being revealed... One question about Nashville Tuning: Have you ever experienced tearing strings while tuning them one octave up? And have you ever seen the production documentary about creating a cover of Bon Jovis "Wanted Dead or Alive" in Sonar X1 done by YT-User "SouthButte1"? Hearing that was when I was first astonished how good self recorded guitars can sound being tweaked in Sonar...

I always enjoy your videos. I'd like to know though when you say there's no processing going on how you overcame the proximity effect and the natural guitar resonances? The mic that you have doesn't sound anything like that at that closer proximity to any guitar in the world with no processing. The low end has clearly already been rolled off amongst many other cleaning up of your signal like the cut you already have at around 200hz. I'd love you to do a response regarding this video by what you mean by no processing. No processing to most people means mic, interface then daw only. That would be really helpful. Can't wait for your next vid

Hey Mike, love the videos. I am a longtime Cakewalk/Sonar user and it is harder and harder to find useful videos now that they sold to Bandlab. Wondering if you could do a video on limiters, paying particular attention to low ends from Bass and Keyboards not ruining the mix. My mixes often sound great through my headphones (usually have to play at night while the family sleeps) but then when transitioning to regular speakers or car speakers the bass dominates the mix and ruins the overall mix.

I've used all of those methods but if I have a song with lots of acoustic guitar I love method 5. Also, I never could get a usable sound with the pick up either.

Hi Mike, I love your videos, I learn from them all the time, and I also use Cakewalk. I have a question for you, I record Spanish guitar, solo and sometimes in a group. I use a Rode NT1-A microphone on the bridge and an AKG 451 B on the 12th fret. My problem is that my breathing is always recorded and sometimes it is too obvious. I've tried all kinds of settings, changing the distance of the mics, different noise gates, and breath suppressor plugings, but I'm still not satisfied. Do you have any advice that could improve this situation. Regards and Thanks.

Should the room be acoustic treated or I can just record a good quality fingerstyle sound in a normal bedroom? do you cover a rug on your floor or is that hardwood or sth else? please answer this question because I have recording equipments but whenever I record in a bedroom I get a dead muddy sound with lot of resonant frequency!

Got a question and hope someone has an answer. I am new to recording and I have a song that I have multi guitar tracks in mind. Is it best to do each track down the middle or do one track left and the other one right? Each track are a little different. It's going to be three different tracks then a lead at some point. Is the lead a center track, seems to me it would.

I'm struggling with input levels for recording acoustic guitar. I have a Rode NT1 A into a Focusrite Scarlett Interface. I find I need to have the input gin right up in order to even hear what I have recorded. But then I get clipping
