Did you know that drone use in most National Parks without permission, even as a recreational or amateur user can attract huge fines, confiscation of your drone, and other penalties? If you are a professional content creator you may need a licence to operate your drone, insurances, and various other requirements.

Very interesting topic and great share Ralph 👍 I didn't realise there were so many National Parks in Australia and so many rules about drones 🤔

Thanks Bruce - it was quite a surprise when I found out, especially seeing how some of the biggest KZfaq creators are using drone footage all through national parks - not cool!

I’ve had rc planes, helicopter, and 5 Dji drones for recreational use only. 1 week ago, I sold my last RC. After 5 years of flying, I sold all of them. Why?, because of the fun police!!. I’m a responsible man of 61yo. I’ve had enough of all the rules !!. And I never had an accident with people involved. Fly safe and enjoy.

Can’t do much in Australia - under lock and key with absolutely everything. It’s quite disappointing recreational users are automatically prohibited in pretty much all states, especially if you as a recreational user take the time to learn to fly the drone and be a responsible pilot of the drone

Mess for whom? You basically can't fly anywhere. Every council makes up it's own rules as well because they don't want drones to be flown. The rules set by CASA are really very very strict but you even if you fulfil them you still can't fly because someone just didn't like the idea of drones. That's not reasonably too basically block up every space in the country all the time. A more sensible approach is to register the drone, have insurance, licence the training & centralise with a website. This is so that at certain times & certain places people are actually allowed to use them & everyone knows this. I think that drone footages like great photograph enhances the value of nature & why protect places with public money if you just keep the public out. The idea that there'd be a feeding frenzy if buzzing drones everywhere ruining everyone's enjoyment is simply untrue. You got tracks with 4WD, motorbikes, boats on rivers & somehow we've seemed to manage all this usage. I didn't buy a drone for years because of this but I couldn't help myself & bit the bullet because the image quality is so amazing now. In WA & Queensland you are actually allowed to fly in the National Parks if you discuss with them to make sure they're weren't any operations going on. Sounds reasonable. To my dismay I'm in WA now .... the few parks I've been to simply just ban them.

Basically you cannot fly drones anywhere , so what is the point to even sell them? Nanny state at its worst. I cannot believe that anybody would think that this is normal and ok. I am sure many people buy small 240g drones, only to discover that they are practically banned everywhere in Australia.

Great video mate. If you go through the process of applying for a permit let’s say for example in the snowy Mountains what are the chances of it being approved?

I've been told by NPWS centre at Jindabyne there is zero chance as an amateur. They also said theres a good chance as a pro if you have licence, insurances, and pay required fees

The link to Andy H's page appears to be broken. Or something on that site is. I got "There has been a critical error on this website." when I clicked on your link. Just a quick comment though - they have problems with us flying our drones in parks citing welfare concerns for the local fauna, but have no issue about noisy, fume belching scenic joyflight helicopters buzzing the local flora and fauna, or groups of mud-tyred 4WDs making their way through them. Surely they must have a greater impact on these areas than someone who puts a 250g drone up for a quick video/still shots of the parks?

Good one Ralph. I know what you mean. I've seen a lot of questionable drone footage on KZfaq. I shot some myself, just a quick up about 15m rotate, then land. Never saw another sole all day but obviously not legal.

Very good, thanks Ralph. I brought a mini 3 pro specifically to capture some footage in the mountains in winter when I camp out in the snow. I was devastated to learn that I can't fly there. Have you tried to get permission to film in a National Park? Do you think I can get permission as an amateur?
