I was raised to believe that credit cards were evil... I really wish I would have known where to find this kind of information when I was younger. By the time I was ready to buy a house, I had no credit. Luckily my girlfriend, now wife, had really good credit. Really hope some young folks see your video and really listen to your advice. It is great information and spot on advice.

For an immigrant who has 0 idea what credit history is - this is the best video i could ever find! Thank you for the explanation, I only have 1 question: should i leave some balance like $50-$60 in my statement balance or balance should be paid in full? some videos say i gotta leave some balance in order to show the credit usage..
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
Glad you found the video helpful! There's a difference between "leaving a balance" vs. "reporting a balance." If you "leave a balance," that means you did not pay your full fill. For example, if your bill was $600 and you paid $580, that would "leave" $20 left over, which would be the portion that gets carried to the next month (and you'll be charged interest). If you simply "report a balance," that means you let your balance get reported to the credit bureaus to show that you're using your card. The opposite of this would be to report a $0 balance, which would mean you paid your card down to $0 before the billing cycle closes, and then a $0 balance gets reported. Your balance usually gets reported 1x per month, so if it's $0, then that's when it looks like you aren't using your card (from the bureau's perspective). So... No, you do not need to "leave a balance" and get charged interest to build credit. I'd personally avoid that. It's also ok to report a $0 balance, which counts as an on-time payment and helps build your credit score. However, if you consistently have a $0 balance, your score may eventually become stagnant instead of growing higher. For that reason, it's often best to let a balance get reported, but ideally one that's not too high. Here's a link to another video you may find helpful: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNp5qqqdydidoo0.html

Thanks Ronald! Having 2+ secured credit cards will likely do the opposite and *increase* your credit score 🙌💯😃 You may see your score lower slightly in the beginning months, but once the cards get older, 3 awesome things will happen: (1) Your average age will rebound and grow longer (2) You'll have even more payment history and (3) You'll have more total credit in your name, which will drive down your utilization provided your spending habits remain the same 👍

For Credit Utilization, you say keep it under 30%. Others say keep it under 10%. Which is it really? Thank you.
@MarkReese Жыл бұрын
There isn't a hard rule about this. Generally speaking, under 30% is ideal to maintain consistent good credit scores, and under 10% is ideal to maintain consistent excellent credit scores. Also be aware that you can use whatever portion of the limit you like throughout the month. Just get the utilization low by the close date, which is when most cards report their balances (i.e. your utilization is only calculated 1x per month, not daily).

I have a friend who reported 30% credit card utilisation on their most recent credit report then the remaining balance was paid to zero after the statement date but before the due date, the person's credit score dropped after the due date, do you happen to have any knowledge on why that occur and what can be done so this doesn't occur again?
@MarkReese2 жыл бұрын
1. The score likely dropped because 30% is a moderate amount of usage. To obtain higher scores, under 10% is ideal. 2. To have a lower utilization get reported, do the following: a. Identify the statement close date. b. Make an early payment (Payment 1) a couple days before that statement close date in order to bring the balance down to an amount that represents under 10% of the credit limit. That will cause a lower balance to get reported. c. Let the statement close & get the bill. d. Pay off the rest of the bill in full on any day by the due date (i.e. Payment 2) 3. If your friend does not have a need for the highest score possible (e.g. in order to qualify for a lower rate on a house, car, loan, etc.), then a drop in credit score due to utilization does not have any real-world significance. During some months when I have higher expenses & bigger credit card balances, I actually don't make multiple payments to bring the balance down. I simply let the bigger balance get reported & my score drops. Then next month when I have my regular (and smaller) expenses, a smaller balance gets reported & my score increases again. Score fluctuations are normal & aren't a problem (unless, again, you _need_ to maintain a high score for a specific reason).

How does the utilization ratio work for something like the Capitol One Spark 2% Cash Plus Business Card that doesn't have any preset spending limit? I guess the rub is there is no APR so you just pay a 2.99% fee for any balance not completely paid off each month. I just don't get if there's an open date, close date, and due date like any regular credit card.
@MarkReese2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak with 100% certainty with Capital One charge cards, but with an Amex charge card, the utilization of that card is not factored into your credit score ✌️ All charge cards still have an open date, close date, and due date 👍
@TonyNovation2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkReese So, I figured out that the Capitol One Spark 2% Cash Plus Business Card, advertised as "no limit" actually just means it has a hidden spending limit that "adapts" to your needs. Complete bullshit being that I signed up for it for $150 a year and my first purchase of $15k was declined. Bastards, I tell you!
@MarkReese2 жыл бұрын
@@TonyNovation - Ah bummer, although Amex charge cards work the same way. The transaction approval threshold on charge cards fluctuates based on various factors, one of which is your purchase history...another of which is payment history. Since you haven't had prior transactions or payments on the card, perhaps $15K at once was a red flag. Before you give up on it entirely, consider charging around $5K to it for a few months, then ramp up to around $10K, and then higher as needed. I've seen Capital One become quite generous with limits & transaction approvals with people after the history has been built 💯 Totally understand your frustration though.

If you don’t have a use for the line of credit anymore, here’s what I’d do: Apply for a new credit card now to get some more credit in your name. Have the $28K line of credit open while you do this to leverage that line’s age, history, an and size. Then, because the line is only 1 year old, go ahead and close it. Keep your credit cards open and let them age going forward. Btw: Fortunately, positive credit history remains on your credit profile for 10 years after closing an account.
