Frodo's voice in this is how I imagined it while reading the book 40+ years ago. Very innocent and child-like. He grew up in a sheltered place, having no idea of the horrors of the world. Suddenly he is cast into the worst of it. It's no wonder he emerged so damaged he couldn't remain in the Shire. He lost everything he was to destroy the ring. Tolkien wanted to express this, and did so very well. It represented those of his generation who went off to war. Those who did come home were never the same afterwards. They had seen the horrors of brutal Warfare, and never forget what they saw. They lived with it, some better than others, to the end of their days. Few spoke of it. That's probably for the best. Most people would not have believed them. They couldn't imagine how awful it was. In truth, they didn't want to know. They just thought they did. When these Veterans did speak, they would find people avoiding them, fearing them. They learned quickly not to talk about it with anyone except other Vets. Having suffered the same hardships, they helped each other through the bad times. It's no wonder most remained friends for the rest of their lives.

Almost everyone in the Animated LOTR movie was rotoscoped. Ralph Bakshi wanted to get the most realistic movement as possible so he hired actual stunt doubles to trace over. even in some scenes you can tell its live action with a saturation filter over it (then entire battle of helms deep was with real stunt doubles BTW). Bakshi was a genius with this movie, and it sucks WB wanted and tried so hard for this to flop.

I actually love that in this version, Gandalf has a few moments where he gets to be ominous and spooky. Like for all his moments of warmth and charm, he's still an ancient, magical being with a lot of weighing on his shoulders, including the knowledge and memory of horrifying things that cause him to come across a good deal darker and more somber. He kind of reminds me of the Fourth and Seventh Doctors from Doctor Who in that way.
@maaz322 Жыл бұрын
I agree, Gandalf in the movies was more like a sardonic grandpa and friend than a man of ancient wisdom or mystic nature.
@JK-yt3dm Жыл бұрын
TBF, Tolkien did write him as a sardonic grandpa originally, and then had to balance that depiction with the new, darker tone of the lord of the rings so he would seem like the same character. It was inevitable he would seem a tad bit lighthearted at times, given the source depiction Tolkien had to work with.

@@FatGouf It's not supposed to be the entire story. Ralph Bakshi planned on making a duology, with this movie covering The Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers and the second half covering the rest, but the studio told him that nobody wanted to watch only half of a movie, so they didn't put "Part 1" in the title (This was before the idea of multi-part adaptations caught on). And then what do you know? The sequel got canceled because the first film ended up getting negative reviews for not covering the entire novel. Good thing Rankin/Bass adapted Return of the King a couple years later or we would've never seen the One Ring get destroyed in animated form. Though neither Bakshi nor Rankin/Bass ever touched the second half of The Two Towers.
