Theres a reason the USA commercial of Metroid Fusion calls that thing "your greatest fear"

The irony is... the Metroid DNA used to save Samus' life from the X parasite infection... was from the baby Metroid... the same baby Metroid Samus spared and brought along from Planet SR388 after being recognized as its 'mama'. The same baby Metroid, after being mutated into the Super Metroid by the Space Pirates, that sacrificed its life so Samus can truly defeat Mother Brain. Once again, that baby Metroid saves Samus' life through its DNA killing off the infection and giving birth to the Fusion Suit.

“Samus, you shouldn’t have done that...” First play through I about had a heart attack. Subtle things like that just cut through my soul.

This game has everything to scare you. A creepy intro to set up this game with a creepy plot to back it up, an enemy that combines creepy music and invulnerability to be absolutely terrifying, timed sequences to put your nerves on edge, and ear demolishing screams from Ridley and the final boss.

That was one detail I always liked, how in the restricted lab area, the other metroids ignored Samus, they probably see her as one of them. The Omega Metroid is probably much more violent than the larval stage or possibly territorial

Fun fact, if you go into the game’s files, you can see Nettori actually IS (mimicking) a robotic Chozo statue under all those vines. So you really weren’t far off.

I really like that one of Dark Samus's victory animations in Smash Bros is a reference to SA-X, with the sudden zoom up on its face and its creepy glowing eyes.

The Metroid series is excellent with creating tension and fear, especially for often being on systems with limited graphical capabilities. It also even can damage a player's ears, in some cases. How immersive!

On the topic of the SA-X using the Spazer Beam instead of the Plasma Beam: That shot went right through Samus. I like to think the SA-X is just that terrifying and figured out how to use the Plasma and Spazer Beams at the same time.

If only they gave SA-X a better fight after such a long build-up time. But this is still my most fav Metroid game

"Do you want that Samus in a Bikini?" I played Fusion some years ago and stopped at the spider boss from which you would get the Space Jump. It was the scariest thing I ever saw in video games. Even watching this video with this music was crazy powerful.

The funny thing about the namesakes of MetroidVanias is that the themes of the two are what you'd expect the other to have. Metroid is full of eerie ambience and you constantly feel at risk, while Castlevania has blasting music, you feel awesome when playing it and there's only the occasional fright you'd expect out of a sci-fi story,

I was just thinking the other day about how now that Metroid 2 has gotten a good remake (2 of them actually), the next step is to remake Metroid Fusion on the Switch. Certainly a landmark game and perhaps the most horrific despite being on a portable. Imagine how much they could improve the SA-X, giving it better movement patterns, maybe allow it to appear in certain other rooms if you dick around too much, making things less predictable. Oh, and on the Hard mode you can fight several of them in the final battle at once. Indeed, Samus' courage is a force to be reckoned with on its own... most of the time. I suppose she could say she's already been through the worst that can happen- losing one's world and family as a child. On the other hand, Link has been able to face down multiple Redeads and other unholy atrocities like Dead Hand without going mad from stress.

Ah, i remember this damn Nemesis thing. Is the feel of shooting every single weapon and the 0 damage sounds and your head turns in 90° from "Fight!" to "FLIGHT!!!"

Fun fact: this was my first Metroid game handed down to me along with the gba when I was 5. My first encounter with the SA-X made me pissed scared and I turned off the console. I could get past other bosses but Serris as I kept trying to fight it under water :/

A bit of visual storytelling that I love in Fusion is how every single door in the Restricted Laboratory area requires Level 4 clearance, when usually there's just one door with extra security clearance, and the rest are just those white Level 0 doors. It really accentuates how you're ESPECIALLY not supposed to be in there.

The way the SA-X stalks you throughout the game reminds me of the Xenomorph from Alien.

Nintendo REALLY brought the Sci-Fi Horror genre to an artform with Metroid: Fusion. Kind of hard to believe that you can get so deeply engrossed in the game that you (I did, at least) get that feeling feeling of personal fear that you're the one about to get taken down...it breaks the wall between reality and fantasy, and I love they made a game that actually makes you fear for your own life, even though it's just pixels on a screen.

I feel like they went into a LOT of uncharted territory with the Fusion suit. It's almost like weaponizing bacteria instead of standard weaponry. The ending feels kinda...rushed. Not in a "They rushed the game" kinda way. Her getting the standard suit back just doesn't really seem to fit. It's almost like they planned on keeping the game's ending with her just barely able to defeat SA-X, then flying off, leaving the Power Suit behind, and keeping the Fusion Suit. Which would be cool to me. I'd imagine they were basically in a meeting, finished explaining the plot, and after they were finished someone said "Haha, cool! ...soooooo how does Samus get back the Power Suit?" - In this moment, they realized/remembered Samus has very specific branding and merchandising, along with other stuff - "..." "..." "..." "...I see." "No! I mean, uhhhh we're still working on that!" *After the meeting* "FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK-UHHH SHIT, I don't care! Whatever! Have her absorb the SA-X, it makes sense if you don't think about it!" "Wha-? But sir, I thought tha-" "DON'TTHINKABOUTIT!!"

The SA-X showing up during the Omega Metroid fight could be for a rather simple reason I never see anyone bring up: Samus's ship is the only way off the station and the only way to reach said ship is through the Omega Metroid. Hell it might be in the docking bay because it chased one or more SA-X in there, devoured them which pushed it to molt into an Omega. Then it sees Samus approach and thinks "Yay more food has arrived!" and attack.

a minor detail, but i always appreciated how Samus holds her arm cannon up with her hand, while the SA-X just uses its hand over the arm cannon to aim it, shows how week Samus really became at the start of the game.

The sa-x can't grab ledges because in zero mission you need the power grip to do so and the sa-x can't do that because it's copying the suit from super metroid and not zero mission. You(the player) can grab ledges cause the new suit is lighter than the old one.

I probably played Metroid Fusion because of the SA-X specifically. I'm glad I did because the game is great fun and I've played through it multiple times, always trying to get a faster time and a better score each time. However, upon playing the game the first time, I realized that some of the assumptions I made about the SA-X were not true, and I couldn't help but be the slightest bit dissatisfied... For the one thing, I was given the impression that the SA-X was an entirely random encounter throughout the game, to the point where it could literally pop-up anywhere. I assumed that each sector would have a metaphorical "time-limit"; if you were to stay in one place for too long, the SA-X would become alerted to your presence there, and would randomly enter the sector and begin searching for you. I felt like this would've stirred up the fear; the game is encouraging you to explore through areas for secrets, but also has a consequence for lingering; so it would become imperative to manage your time effectively. When I realized that every encounter with the SA-X was scripted, I couldn't help but feel like it relieves the tension a bit too much. Another problem I had was the revelation that there was more than one SA-X on the space-station. It makes for an interesting idea that there are more of these dangerous and powerful enemies on-board...but you only ever encounter one at a time. The revelation that there are not one but ten of them, is ultimately kind of pointless. Plus, it robs the unique menace of the SA-X; the idea that the X that nearly killed Samus in the intro was now Mimicking her, gives the sense of the situation being "personal"; this creature knew how dangerous Samus was to it's natural predator - the Metroids - and had now taken her form, effectively replacing her. And now that she has Metroid DNA - and its intended role is to replace her - it is now hunting her down across the ship. This makes their "rivalry" a lot more interesting, and why the final section of the game works so well - the final confrontation when Samus overcomes her X-Counterpart, but then has to join with it to overcome a common-enemy. If I were directing this game, after the restricted sector is jettisoned from the space station, I'd include a scene that reveals the SA-X overcame the Metroids, and escaped from the sector as it was being ejected from the station, most likely landing on the surface outside, until finding its way back in. It would be representative of Samus' never-give-up attitude and her ability to overcome seemingly any obstacle, and would further paint the creature as an unstoppable force. But those are just my thoughts

16:24 Yes. The general head canon is that the fusion suit is nimble and lightweight, which allows it to grab ledges and climb ladders. But the original suit was too heavy to do so without the power grip upgrade that you find in zero mission. And since the power grip WASN'T in super metroid, the SA-X doesn't have it. Gotta love the attention to detail in this franchise!

From what I heard on the Metroid Wiki. The metroid that attacks you in the final part of Super Metroid, is the baby metroid that Samus was raising from Metroid II, which is now in adulthood. Before it killed Samus, it suddenly noticed that Samus was her mother basically, and stopped attacking her. Also, because of you Whoisthisgit, and some other youtube videos of Fusion, I decided to finally get a rom to play Metroid Fusion, and man was it a fun but difficult game the bosses! But after about 2 days, I finally managed to beat it, and it felt so goood! I'll def be buying a actual copy of the game!

A small discrepancy I noticed however is @11:18 The SA-X is using the Ice Beam not the Spazer (the Spazer was simple an upgrade that made your shots shoot 3 beams by default) that's why it can freeze and severely damage damage Samus. Metroids (in this case Samus as well) aren't weak to Fire which is what Plasma of the Plasma beam which would be much weaker (lore-wise) against Metroids as they have great resistances to every element except Cold. SA-X can't use the Gravity Suit because Samus never had it as seen in the opening scene she's seen with the Varia suit. @16:46 Well I wasn't the brightest but I didnt expect that wall to blow up too!
