Cresson, PA - The Summit of the Allegheny Mountains (Drone Video)

Just nine miles west of Horseshoe Curve, Norfolk Southern reaches the summit of the Allegheny Mountains in the borough of Cresson, Pennsylvania. Sitting at an elevation of just over 2,000 feet above sea level, Cresson is home to a small rail park containing a Pennsylvania Railroad caboose, a shelter with picnic tables, a gazebo, and a viewing platform, making the rail park a fantastic place to watch the action on Norfolk Southern’s busy Pittsburgh Division. Besides watching trains from the rail park, railfans can watch live trains in Cresson around the clock on the RailStream webcam ( • RAILSTREAM LIVE! Cress... ) located at the Station Inn, just a few blocks from the rail park. In addition to the 60 or more Norfolk Southern freight trains that railfans can see each day in Cresson, Amtrak trains 42 and 43, The Pennsylvanian, pass Cresson during daylight hours each day. Additionally, the R.J. Corman Railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern at Cresson right in front of the rail park. In this drone video, we explore the mainline section of track that passes the rail park in Cresson, along with the small Norfolk Southern servicing facility right across from the rail park. We also take a peek at some of the railroad equipment being stored behind the servicing facility.
This video was recorded using a DJI Mavic Pro drone, and the audio was recorded separately at ground level using a GoPro HERO Session.

Very nice video, David! Good overall presentation, too. My son and I just spent a week at the Station Inn back in September. We visited the Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, the Juniata shops, and even took a day trip to Strasburg and the museum there. Had a great time!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane @David Lauback. I grew up in Loretto, PA, the home of Saint Francis University. Was born there in 1956, and have been familiar with the sounds & sights of area trains throughout my lifetime. I now live in Freeport, PA, and have no choice but to have become an amerature Railroad & Train enthusiast since my property borders an old railroad depot and also has several trains running within 100 yards daily.

I’ll be in Cumberland in a couple of weeks! Travelling on the Mallet, as I’m from Great Britain, Cresson will be on our TO DO LIST as we shall be continuing onto Reading for another steam trip with 2102

Good job. This is Tom Lieb commenting and most of my 40 years worked on the railroad - Penn Central/ConRail/Norfolk Southern - track department was spent at this headquarters here in Cresson. Nice to see it 'from the air'! Lots of memories stirred! Thanks, David Lauback.

I can almost see my moms childhood home at 8:10 The church is on her street.Powell Ave.My aunt still lives in the house.She just turned 101 yrs.old.

Cresson PA is my home town where I grew up. Love this video and makes me miss Cresson! I use to live in the apartment building right beside the tracks.

Hi Dave. Kenny from Albuquerque New Mexico. Been there many times and stay with Tom at the Station Inn. You did a great job thank you. Both my Grandfathers worked for the PRR in Harrisburg PA and Enola PA. Our house was right next to the tracks at the Over View Bridge in Enola. This was 1943 to 1950. If you ever have a opportunity I'd love to see a drone view of Enola and Harrisburg. Thanks Kenny.

Sir David !! THANKS as DRONE VIDEO is awesome !!! Don't know if its still there ,,but there was a Cresson Ridge restaurant on US22 that had a painting on the wall next to the ceiling of Horseshoe curve !!! Been many years since been up there since the completion on I-99 !! ""KEEP IT SAFE ""!!

K B- Sadly the Cresson Ridge restaurant is just a vacant building as of two years ago.My aunt lives in Cresson and when I was a kid back in the early 1970's when PENN CENTRAL was still around,my dad would take us to that restaurant for a hamburger and a big glass of chocolate milk when we would visit from Michigan.Boy,I really miss those times.

Great video just one thing the Pittsburgh line doesn't go all the way to Conway it stops at Pittsburgh and the Fort Wayne line goes to Conway and beyond

Great question! I'm not exactly sure, but I believe that NS lists the overall grade of the Curve as 1.34% in their timetables. If anyone on here knows for sure, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
