Overnight, the largest crane on the eastern seaboard arrived at the site of the bridge collapse in Baltimore to help lift debris from the water. Officials say the section of the bridge trapping the cargo ship weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons.

I Retired at the end of 2022 after 50 years working at almost every port facility in Baltimore, When the Key Bridge was built in the mid 70's ships were nowhere near the size they are now. Ships with automobiles were still bulk carriers using ships gear to lift cars out of the holds one at a time and place them dockside to be driven away. I was there! Containers were new and pure container ships were not yet in service. Ships now are many times the size they were then.

No. It's too dangerous for tugs to be connected to a large ship like this in the channel. They could get pulled under killing the entire crew. Plus, it's far more likely a tug would lose power than a large vessel. You would actually see more catastrophic accidents.

@@donwyoming1936 "They could get pulled under killing the entire crew. Maybe it was the prop walk caused the stern to move port side, of course the bow would move starboard side accordingly. While propeller was in full reverse (judging by the amount of engine smoke), the rudder was much less effective in steering the ship, despite the ship was having emergence/regular power minutes before the collision. Sounds like pilot's or operator's error when they were under great stress to regain directional control, they should have kept the ship going forward inside the navigation channel as it was instead of putting the ship in reversing.

Ponte Pietra is a Roman bridge that spans the Adige River in Verona, Italy. It was built in the 1st century AD and is one of the oldest bridges in the world. On April 24, 1945, during the retreat in Northern Italy, the German army mined and exploded three of its five arches. The explosion caused the structure to lift up and then fall back down, miraculously remaining intact. Ponte Pietra is still in use.

Clearing that mess will take weeks if not months. It's not like rebuilding a road where you can divert traffic to another lane or road. The bridge remnants laying on the ship can be removed pretty quick. Then you have to repair the ship to float it out. Remove containers off the ship? Then bring in trained divers to remove the underwater debris. This will IMO take very long to accomplish. The water is approximately 45 degrees and will not warm up for months so divers will be in underwater gear similar to building an offshore drilling rig. No real pressure to deal with but not the Caribbean. Now I don't know if the yahoo reporter was correct in saying that a ship this size and weight only has 12 - 18 inches of clearance in this channel to the keel! That can't be correct. If it is I would start some dredging operations!

Listen our planet is 70% water and i don't think anyone deserves to Pass through Drowning, thay just sounds soooo ridiculous and absolutely stupid! Our society is built so strong that we have so mnay peiple who are incapable of Basic Survival, this is basically a Handicap. At least make it to where area near bodiees if Water have Swimming Protocols in place to demand that most of the populace living in an area near water, or anyone who works near water, to know How To Swim! What nonsense and artificial handicap is that to not know how to swim? Your Bidy already floats, thats half the damn job, and in a moment of life and death, someone can be so weorheless that they cant even save themselves, in a bidy that naturally floats. Naaaa thats too damn sad and we shouldnt be ok with living with that sort of Handicap!

And all that hazardous waste is leaking into the water affecting the sea life and those who depend on it. Like the Crab fishermen & Oyster fisherman. Why was the ship carrying hazardous waste in the first place!!! Were they planning on dumping the containers in the deep ocean?!!!!

it was intentional.. I'm telling you... It is right there in the video. The ship was steered towards that pier... Cause it was on a straight fn shot to the wide Opening there under the bridge. They steered it into the fn column... power or no power... Now they're saying the fuel being dirty Caused the ship to steer wrong.... IT WAS INTENTIONAL.. WATCH THE FN FILM... Another thing: At 2A.M...How did we get so many videos taken of it?????

It was not intentional. Ships break and the water isn't as easy as you think. It's a dynamic fluid. Not the asphalt in front of your house.

So, you know wind exists and can easily push a boat with massive flat sides? windage is a massive problem for vessels this size when near shore and the wind was pushing the boat to starboard now.. no one is saying dirty fuel caused it to steer incorrectly but if dirty fuel took the generators offline then the main engine would stop working as the generators power the fuel pumps and injectors on the main... also the rudder is hydraulic so again, no generator, no power to move the rudder
