Cricket is the most widely played darts game in the USA - but in the UK, the hotbed of darts, people don't even know how to play!
I go through how to play the game of darts cricket, and also go through the alternative game played in the UK under the same name!

Great video mate, I'm UK based so always played 501 but about 4-5 years ago was introduced to cricket by another player on my team. We mainly use it as a practice game to 'get us moving around the board' as a warm up for 501 but over the last few years I've grown to really enjoy it and I play it alone now to on darts apps when practicing at home. I think it's great for improvement on the 'set up' triples that you really only use in finishing 17s, 16s etc, I'll always be a 501 player but I really appreciate cricket now as its own game and I enjoy it a lot. Sorry for the long post lol but keep up the good videos, good luck with the channel.

In addition to your description of American cricket I would add the advice that you never chase your opponent. If your opponent closes, or blocks out as you say, twenty in his first three darts and is able to score on them, your first three darts should be at nineteen to try and close and score on them. Otherwise, if say you only get two twenties, you leave them open for him to score on. Then you will be down not only the one twenty you didn't hit but whatever he scores on them. If you close nineteen you can at least score apace them. Then when you get a chance you can work your way back to closing twenty. The scoring at times and in the right situation can get fairly crazy. Most games, at the level I play at anyway, the score doesn't exceed 200 to 250 per side. However, last year I played a doubles game where the combined score was over 3000. Also, to win the game you must not only close out all the numbers and have a higher score but you must close out bull as well with the outer section counting as one while the bull counts as two.

Hey, recently subscribed to your channel and love it and found it really useful. I live in Cape Town South Africa and interestingly we play the UK version of ‘cricket’ as you guys do (generally in a pub) but we play a game called ‘Killer’ which is the US version of cricket except it goes from 20-10 then doubles, trebles and bull (same scoring rules).

Most people in a bar setting in the US play the version of Cricket where the 1st person to get 3 of each number and 3 of the bullseye wins, so it is pretty simple. People who are really into darts will play the version where you are playing for points, which is fun because it is a lot more strategic, but most people do not.

It's a mental game but otherwise, very straightforward. I've often had debates on whether 501 or cricket is the more skilled game. I prefer 501 despite living in the US and growing up playing both. The league I am on is more cricket based but we do play some '01 games too. Our singles matches start with 301 DiDo then cricket. If it goes to a third game, it's a choice between 301 and cricket. More often than not, cricket is chosen.
@patrickfutato6555

I also play a three player variation of Cricket (US) where your points get applied to the other player or players who haven’t yet closed out that number. So if player 1 has closed 20s, but the others haven’t, any 20 hit by player 1 adds 20 points to players 2 and 3. If player 1 and player 2 both close their twenties, but player 3 hasn’t, any 20s hit by player 1 or 2 gets added to player 3’s score. In the end, low score wins.

Watched a couple of your videos, liked what I saw and subscribed. I, as always, would like to give Darren a big shout out. He gave me a set of Harrows Verve darts a couple of years ago, a dart I never would have considered for myself. Im here from darts review. I’m on west coast Canada we play a cricket type game we call tactics which is the same as cricket but includes doubles and triples of any number. The league is fairly large about triple the size of our 501 leagues. I would love to see more videos! More training and practice vids. More tips and tricks. Would love some DIY vids showing how to make things like a hideaway oche or darts storage solutions.

Interestingly, we used to play a slightly more convoluted form of American cricket back in my school days (early 90s). It included numbers down to 12, plus also trebles, doubles, and a “bed”, one bed being all three darts thrown in the same bed. Hence its name “beds and bulls”. And of course we also played the English version of cricket. I find the most mystifying thing in all this is how the American game got the name “cricket”!

Threw a few darts at a bar I worked at when I was 21. You are right, mostly cricket. 22 years later I join a dart league start throwing 01 games & get addicted to darts. 9 months in & it’s all I think about lol. We play more 01 games but always have the cricket games. Wish 01 could grow in the states. Like your channel hope to see more. If you have any pointers for a left handed thrower that is right eye dominant would love see a segment about eye dominance & opposite hand throwers

I’m just starting out & but the more I get into it & it seems to be growing. For most it is just a fun night out at the bar, but more seem to be getting serious about it now that people are getting dart connect & web cams & playing people from different places.

I'm in Canada and yes we play Cricket but I wouldn't say we play more Cricket then 01. I'm a Steel tip player so I can't speak for the soft tip players though. That said our league is structured Doubles Cricket best of 3, Doubles 501 best of 3, Doubles Chicago (DI/O 301, 501, Cricket) best of 3 (winner of the cork chooses which game is played so if you win 2 straight you won't play one of the types of games). Then we play 2 rounds of 501 singles best of 5. This is the first I've ever heard of the UK version of Cricket darts. I have to say it sounds really interesting. Only issue I see is if you are playing on your home board to often you are going to blow through the single and double bull really quickly and will need to change your board more often as there is no rotating for the bull. That said I'll give it a go, it will break up the monotony a bit.
@DartsClass
@DartsClass 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tom, I find it fascinating the formats that are popular in different areas around the world! To be honest the UK version is normally played as a fun interlude game or a warm up to break up the monotony of 121 as a practice game. But it makes for a nice change every now and again! Thank you for watching and for the sub! I appreciate it 👍🎯

Sorry for the text wall. Just some insight from a US based dart player. I have been playing darts for around 12 years or so now. Pretty much play everyday. I am 34 from Houston Texas. Outside of the city hubs here in south Texas its ALL pretty much soft tip darts. Unfortunately for whatever reason the bars/pubs around here that play steel tip darts are all clustered around the city center in my case even though I prefer it. Being about 30 miles away it really doesn't work for me(thats 60 miles round trip for me so after drinking its a no go), so I am stuck playing by myself or with a few friends on my steel tip board. Soft tip is whats popular here in the states MUCH more that steel. Also most of the bigger statewide tournaments(Bullshooters/State from Arachnid) have different events which consist of doubles and singles cricket, Doubles 501 OI OO Freeze(which I hate freeze and open out for the record for those who know what freeze is), Mixed trips(2 guys 1 girl) cricket. These are the events how we go pro in soft tip by placing in the top 3 of those events (minus trips) then you would be eligible to play in the pro class and if you become good enough you will begin to find sponsors and such. Also one big thing I have noticed being mainly a soft tip player and going to any steel tip competitions playing cricket, soft tip cricket here in the US and in most Asian countries are VERY heavily focused on scoring more that closing, for instance even if I am ahead on points I may still throw 2 darts at a scoring number then throw 1 just to either close or chip away at your numbers, Steel tip players here almost take offense to that as they throw to close numbers even when behind. Most of us serious soft tip players exploit that heavily. Another big point about 501 or 701 here in 99% of the places you play you will be throwing for bulls not T20. Due to the fact bulls are worth 50 for the red and black vs 25 red 50 black. Being its far easier to hit bulls than T20 EVERYONE throws BULLS. Another little fact, most tournaments here are blind draw double elimination Cricket Double Bull on/501 OI Master Out(instead of doubles only its Bull Triple Double out ex. 142 would be Bull Bull T14). I know alot of Europeans/Steel tip players look down on soft tip but what alot of you do not realize is that in the US/Japan/South America thats what most of us have access to. Especially in my and alot of the very talented guys and gals here case. Alot of us would be playing steel if it was closer to us and more popular. The reason I bring this up is because of the comments I read on some of the soft tip videos I watch on youtube calling it "not real darts" etc.... That couldn't be farther from the truth imo considering I and several of us are pretty solid on a steel tip board too. If you want an idea for some content you should look into Gran Boards for soft tip. Not terribly expensive for a Gran Board Dash and imo the app is 1000x better that the Nexus board. I own both for the record. I hate the Nexus board and it was 3x the cost. In the case you see this for some reason feel free to reply to me for any questions. I would be willing to ship one over to you if you have any interest. It may be another way to pull in more US and Asian based viewers if you have any interest.

The reason why Cricket is more popular than 501 in the US is because it is easier to understand, if you play the social kind there is no adding, which is helpful after a few drinks, and even if you have never played darts you might still be okay.

The US Pub Darts Cricket is just as you showed w the exception that we don’t “add” on the points. Most people in pubs cant do the “maths” anyway! What you will see is variations to the game. Double in’s to get started is one. Going in order 20-15 then Bull being another. My darts league just plays a straight Cricket with anything you hit (20-Bull) counts and first team to block out all numbers and bulls wins.

Nice watch! As a Canadian, I love and play a lot of Cricket. In my league we play (back then when we could gather 😅) 2 Crickets and 2 501. I watch a lot of PDC and British youtubers so my view of darts is more British than Canadian though. Keep up your good work, I'm proud to have been in the 1st 300 subs! Video suggestion : I struggle a lot with my release, my darts often don't fly in a straight line and wobble a bit on their way to the board. Because of that, they often land leaning on one side, causing me to hit 5 and 1 instead of 20. If you have any tip for that, I'm taking! Cheers! 🍻🤘🏻

'Murican here. We play a lot of 301/501 but I prefer cricket. I don't know where this "Americans don't play 501/steel tip" misconception came from. We tend to play soft tip for safety but we generally consider steel tip to be "real darts", and x01 is the default; if you challenge someone to a game of darts, it means x01 (usually 301 DI/DO) unless specified otherwise.

I know this video is old, but if you want more fun and variation play low ball cricket or wild card cricket. Low ball is 1-6 instead of 20-15. Wild card is hard on steel tip but we have played via picking numbers out of a hat. You can look up videos on how wild card works. I like any game that doesn’t have you always throwing at the same stuff. 01 games are great, and I play them a ton, but there is a reason why people have to constantly rotate their boards.

Lol iv always been told UK players claim our US Cricket takes no strategy an only uses 5#’s of the board.. I highly disagree but iv heard more UK players hate our game more then like it.. In US we are growing to like 501 alot more.. i think our problem is no one likes to keep score especially drunk 🍻.. cricket is a lot easier for ppl who have been drinking a lot…
