Whattup my Psych for Sore Guys (and gals)
One of the questions I get asked the most is 'Do people fake mental illness whilst they’re on trial?'
This video is Number two of a series of three - about criminal is faking mental illness to try and get away with serious offences. I tell you beautiful view was how to do this and her not to do this - related to have a forensic psychiatrist, such as myself assesses individuals to give evidence for criminal trials.
Armed with this knowledge, do you think you could fool me?

Fascinating stuff. Working in the support and recovery side of MH and treating all as subjective we don’t look for ‘fakes’ however I’m certain that I have worked with some over the years. Unconditional positive regard is a real skill! Are you ever concerned that you might have misdiagnosed borderline cases?

A really big dead give away for me is when someone says that they "had their stomach pumped" following an overdose of medicine. That form of treatment has been well and truely moved to history now, and claiming that screams the person is lying to me.

Please take a look and offer some thoughts on the letecia Stauch case. She is accused of killing her 11 year old stepson and is claiming to be not guilty by reason of insanity. She is claiming to suffer from DID. The trial is closing today in Colorado Springs. It’s broadcast on the law and crime network. Her evaluations with DR Lewis are video recorded and make interesting viewing.

Even if she isn't faking it she will go to a criminally insane unit which is like a jail and a mental hospital combined. There is a good chance she will be locked up longer in there than a regular prison.

I have a diagnosis of BPD and BAD. I have had several psychotic episodes and 3 hospital stays over my 36 years. Can people really fake Psychosis? How do you fake that? Why would you WANT to have a wrong diagnosis hanging over your head? So many questions??? By the way I love your Podcast, I'm a 3rd year Undergrad in Psychology and Criminology now so this is literally the perfect podcast for me

I know for me, (type 2 bipolar) when I have auditory hallucinations, I don't usually hear voices the way that people think I would. Often I just hear music. It's always close by, but I can never find exactly where it's coming from and it's unrelenting. Oh, and it often sounds familiar, but I can't name what song it is. Thankfully they go away once I start being able to sleep again. I have blackouts, but I don't lose entire days and not even really chunks made up of hours, more like I only retain flashbacks of certain events. Though what I hate the most is the jumping between topics. It's embarrassing bc I think I'm making perfect sense, but no one else does. Also, I not only have a very hard time processing what's being said to me (bc my mind is going too fast and in too many directions), but I also have an extremely hard time formulating a response. Typically choosing the correct words and then actually saying them correctly. Basically, my mind is in overdrive and it all makes sense to me in that moment, but to everyone else (and me looking back) it looks like it's gone to mush. But like I said, once my body finally crashes and I can sleep again things usually go back to normal. During my worst manic episode I only got like 3 hrs of sleep in about a week. Can't remember exactly how many days it was somewhere between 6-8. Luckily I'm not an aggressive person so neither I nor my family have to deal with aggression from me. Just frustration from never being understood.

My niece has some drug induced mental problems they're caused from her heavy drug use. But she also exploits the mental illness. She does seem to hear voices occasionally when she is high and coming down but that is meth. When she shop lifts she does crazy things so the employees will say ^geez they don't pay me enough to deal with that" and usually they let her take what she wants. She will go to Walmart go through the line to pay when the cashier tells her the total she says oh I am not paying what can you do about it and grabs her bags to leaves. So if they do call the police she can say she thought she paid. She does have some charges for stealing but not to equal how often she does it. I can't list all the stuff she does here or this would be too long. She inflates her mental illness in court too and she gets slaps on the wrists. She doesn't even do what they order her to do. Shes been orderd multiple times to go to treatment and after care for her drug problem and her mental illness she just doesn't go. They have sent her to 120 detox at a women's prison a few times. The court threatens her that if she doesn't comply she's getting 3yrs in prison. Quite the racket she has going. If I did that stuff I would have been sent to prison or ordered to a secured mental facility for years to complete a sentence. The county court where we live does not treat most individuals that way. Our family is somewhat divided on weather she is mentally Ill or faking. She tried to kick my 82yr old mothers door in, stole from her and tore up her yard. Several months later she called and asked if my mom forgave her then asked for money. My mom stopped giving her money which pissed her off and prompted her trying to kick the door in. She remembers what she does. She's pretty good at it for people that can't see it is an act. Most people are shocked by it. No one in family will let her live with them anymore at all. So she is homeless and I feel bad about that but she stays other places and doesn't seem to mind as long as she can get high. Can you give me some information on how I can tell family members she isn't as bad as she let's on? She's also addicted to getting reactions out of people. She's just as addicted to that as the meth and drugs.

Here in India, a friend of mine faked that I was mentally ill just because I was in substance use which I never abused in my life. The accused a friend of mine mixed 50 pills of benzodiazepine like Nitrosun 10mg in alcohol to murder me which due to my family background was in coma for 10 days. But overall the accused tried to steal my life from me by taking advantage of the communication gap in our family. It took from 2004 when I was male raped with 50 pills to finally diagnose the crime in 2018. Meanwhile the accused joined MS13 and dealing drug peddling and sextortioning of good looking wives of unhealthy husband's apart from his inherited government job in Revenue department of India.

So I’m currently dealing with a particular person who everyone seems to believe is malingering, however from the interactions I’ve had with them I’m fairly confident that there is a genuine psychosis and that they pose a significant risk to public safety based of past history. What do you do? I feel like an assessment was made based of of their history, when actually sitting and talking to them it indicates that they are not well.

@@johnnyearp52 yeah, well his psychosis was induced by the ... cv shots if you know what I mean, at least before those he never had any mental disorder, neither did the family members. 1 month after the second, he started to have delusions. and literally after 2 antipsych pills it was gone. but he's still on the pill. too bad he was in this state for a year because for the love of god we couldn't drag him to a psychiatrist. and his neurotransmitters were all over the place while he was in psychosis, this was the only fact he accepted and decided to go to the psych doctor. so weird, but it happens.

I totally disagree with you as it would take a lot more than listening to any psychologist/psychiatrist's expert opinions to even help you play mentally ill. If you've learnt and perfected lying everything and everybody will pick you pretty quickly. There's a recent saying 'If you tell the truth it becomes part of your past. If you tell a lie, it becomes part of your future.'. My point is the same outcome as Googling many easy ways of killing your partner, friend etc. It becomes a matter of remembering every lie you've told and you'd need to be an extremely good liar with a photographic memory. Just thought I'd put that there. 🤔 Food for thought.
