I don't have schizophrenia or psychosis, but re hearing voices: when I was younger I used to hear sth like a radio being tuned or the voice of a radio presenter, it always only lasted for a few moments. And I never could make sense of it. And one single time only I heard a male voice (am female myself) saying my name.

I had a friend who has simple schizophrenia. She controlled it really well for years, but when cuts to mental health happened, she slowly disintegrated. She was paranoid and always said people had moved things in her flat, or she could hear people in the loft when there couldn’t have been. Unfortunately one by one she become very convinced that her family didn’t care, just wanted her to run around them. In the end she became quite aggressive to me and made many racist comments that made me uncomfortable. I had to distance myself eventually because I wasn’t able to help her and didn’t want a toxic relationship which would have been unhelpful to her. I still feel guilt about that.

I really appreciate this video! I'm autistic with a paranoid schizophrenic parent. I've got a curious mind, but I'm not super close with this parent and don't want to be intrusive trying to pick their brain to satiate my curiosity. Videos like this really help me out. I also just... as someone who loves someone with a *highly* stigmatized mental illness, it warms my heart when people can talk about it without perpetuating that stigma. So thank you :)

I have auditory hallucinations. I was interested to hear that people who are faking might think voices are in someone's head but indeed that is not the case with me. Mine always seem to be coming from the other room. I've heard everything from a thrash metal band to a radio interview (don't ask me how I know, I can't understand what they are saying). I have PTSD and the most problematic sound I heard was a man wearing cowboy boots pacing in my kitchen. I didn't fall asleep until I was absolutely exhausted; it seemed so real I couldn't convince myself there was no one in there.

I had psychosis when I took strong antibiotics for an ear infection. I thought I was going to die. Had to get some other calming medication from the doctor. I now empathise with mentally ill people because it seems truly real what your going through . I couldn’t stop throwing up the next morning. Smelling things is scary, because I’ve woken up and smelt bacon cooking and there isn’t any. Someone said people with brain tumours smell things. That was a while ago and I’m still here. I have a very acutely sense of smell. Scary

I had a psychotic episode and it was no fun I can tell you. I initially got diagnosed with severe depression with psychotic features - i was feeling lower and lower over a period of about 6 months then quite quickly things went pair shaped. I really just remember it starting with complete and utter confusion about everything, who I was, where I was, what time it was - I couldn’t sleep, and then thought there were things moving in the shadows. I thought I could hear whispering in my house- not clear voices but muttering. What was bad is the way i sorted drifted in and out of it. No history of any mental health issues, trauma etc - it turned out to be a vitamin B12 deficiency, which can cause psychoses. I had no idea, after a few injections of B12 I honestly came out of it almost like snapping out of it. I have to have regular injections now - the mind and body is so complex how these things can happen. I wasn’t hospitalised but I was under the CMHT and met lots of people and the thing I learnt is many, many people if not most do recover well and those who don’t can manage themselves very well - I think these overwhelmingly positive stories are missed by the media.

Someone on Twitter was asking about schizophrenia. Just shared 2 of your videos. P.s. respect to you. I have always loved psychology and have worked in a state institution for the severely/ profoundly retarded ( decades ago) and worked in residential homes for the developmentally disabled and am no stranger to behavioral problems. I knew when I was young I had to draw the employment line at the type of facilities you work in; went with a class to a state psych hospital. Honestly, not only was it depressing but I was scared. Kudos.

Please can you respectfully please change the R word in your comment. Not only is it unacceptable in this generation, it is highly offence. My son has Severe Learning disability & non verbal autism...12 years ago people tried to call him that name 😡 or used it to make mock him and make fun of him. It's very triggering for the person, the parents, families, friends, carers, therapists, or those with disabilities. Other descriptions are more acceptable & appropriate. Thank you kindly

I hear voices both inside and outside of my head. And the ones inside my head are not the voice in my head, although I also obviously have that. By which I mean, it doesn't mean someone is faking because they hear either or both. Ironically, the voices on the outside of my head are more muffled, which to me is kind of counterintuitive for some reason because my ears are out there, but they sound distant/muffled. Luckily my voices aren't crazy even if I am. In all seriousness, though, I am lucky that the voices I hear are benign, random (like just random words popping in my head as though i'm hearing snippets of conversations even though it is very distinctly in my head..it's not my thoughts and it is really random and unclear where these things would come from or what they mean... like "clouds were floating", "papers, pencils", "did you see the maroon", "she said gray", all in different tones/voices, none of which match my internal mono/dialogue voice that i've always had) or, in the worst case, it sounds like people arguing with each other just out of my earshot. I also frequently hear what sounds like music playing in the other room or something like what radio announcements would sound like. Oh and I'm not violent/aggressive, have never been in trouble with the law, have a great job working as an engineer at a large, notoriously difficult company to work for and am all around fully functional. I get that that in itself is a privilege on the spectrum of schizophrenia and i am grateful for that. Just wanted to throw some first hand experience out there.

Thank you so much for sharing I find this absolutely fascinating. I’m so happy the voices are benign. Do you ever try to make sense of it or is it random and there is not any? Do you notice fitting or music or other phrases come at consistently felt levels of stress in life. Or do voices have any predictability at all? Thanks for your previous comment you don’t have to answer my questions lol✨

@@commonsense571 i do try to make sense of the voices, though that typically leads to confusion. I check with other people though. I am far more capable of discerning since i had a psychotic break and got diagnosed (for obvious reasons). Before that, it never would have even crossed my mind that i was hallucinating. But once i lost my mind, i realized that was a possibility and therefore always keep it in the back of my mind that my reality may not be real at any given moment.

I got psychosis from cannabis after I got my medcard. I hear the voices inside my head for the most part not outside. Although when I smoke a lot of weed the hallucinations would happen right next to me ear as if I had earbuds in. It sounds almost electronic when that happens. My muscles also twitch when the voices are mad. One time my shoulder twitched to the exact rhythm of the voices as they spoke, as if someone was sending the audio signal of the voices into my arm through an electrode.

Really interesting video and great information. On those with psychosis who do harm, some actively manage to avoid any meaningful medical intervention (in Aus we see them moved out of the wards so quickly it’s easy for them to do). Do you this this could lead to a spiral of both a mental health system and an illness that discourages the person from seeking help? It honestly makes my heart sad.

Instead of thinking of delusions as 'symptoms', you would do better to try to understand them, as most delusions do make sense in the context of the person's life experience. Catatonia occurs when the person is in such a dilemma from the contradictions he's being subjected to that he feels disempowered and retreats into total passivity. The biggest risk for schizophrenia is invalidation, and this is beautifully depicted in the David Mercer play, 'In Two Minds'.

But as time went on they changed her diagnosis to schizophrenia and eventually to schitzoeffective disorder, she still has auditory hallucinations and stuggles with what is reality and what isn't, she believes she can talk to the dead. She hasnt taken medication for years though because for one, they dont work, and two she doesn't believe she is ill BUT she has learned to control it and not let it consume her

Question: Do you ever assess kids or teens under 18? If so do you find it more difficult since mental illness presents differently in adolescents? We hear of cases like the slender man stabbing in the US where i think atleast one of the girls was sentenced to psychiatric care but it may have been both of them. Also how important is it for patients to have some kind of talking therapy (cbt, dbt etc)? I ask this as someone who has generally responded well to medications but has never really had luck with talking therapy (ive underdone both CBT and DBT) but mental health professionals seem to always push talking therapy and was just wondering why that is. I personally found talking therapy and the exercises that they ask you to do such as recording your mood or rating your mood from 1 - 10 to be a bit tedious and dumb. Not bashing those who find that helpful but i dont get why they suggest it if medication is working.

I've seen Slenderman. Sad. I think the one girl remains in a psychiatric facility. I think the hope with talk therapy is to get to the root of the issue if it is not organic or chemical/biological ( nota dr here.) Sometimes things are both. I was in counciling for several years. It was a long time before I could actually verbalize to the therapist but Journaling did me a world of good. I refused group therapy; not a fan. What is good for one may not be for another.

Such drugs actually CAUSE a chemical imbalance and can make him feel a lot worse. It's a known fact that antipsychotics cause brain damage.

A few hours earlier I'd been looking at a dissembled bicycle in my brother's garden shed. Some people who suffer from mental health issues are open to the minds of others ...other people have minds ... which one can experience directly. I enjoyed this video but I feel you spent more time discussing your other clips than really discussing the subject. It was very jumpy and bounced around. It would have been nice for you to slow down your pace a little when getting to the examples or the true content. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your work & knowledge. But for someone who wants to reduce stigma, maybe a different example could be used rather than the false narrative that all fat people love cake. Do better than that.
