Shopkeepers and retail bosses are demanding urgent action to tackle the epidemic of shoplifting sweeping Britain’s high streets. With many shops taking matters into their own hands and putting in place their own measures to protect their staff and products. Paul Gerrard, Campaigns and Public Affairs Director for Co-op, says police and army veterans working undercover for the chain are catching shoplifters only to have to let them go because police are ignoring nearly 80% of cases. We're joined by Paul Gerrard and David Wilson to tell us more about this crime epidemic.

When we say our leaders need to be good examples, this is why. If they are corrupt and deemed to be stealing at the very top, why can't those nearer the bottom of society's ladder do the same - the difference is their 'stealing' materially, from businesses, not from the public purse.

I work in food retail and our shoplifting has dramatically increased over the last few months. 99% of the time, it's either alcohol or baby milk (massive quantities). And we have had occasions where they have become abusive. I hardly see any police round now due to lack of funding, and there is no incentive for shoplifters to stop as the police don't have the resources to deal with it. The police are only doing there best but they are so stretched, it's impossible to keep up

I earn £70,000 per annum and my girlfriend earns £50,000. We dont have kids and steal constantly from big supermarkets. We are both in the public sector and the government has given us numerous paycuts against our will whilst demanding more from us. They then allow the cost of greed to spiral and all of these companies are making record profits depsite not giving payrises to their staff, reducing the size and quality of food and increasing prices. Those cookies that used to cost £1 for 5 and now cost £1.25 for 4 smaller cookies... thats getting stolen then. We need to stand up for ourselves against this corrupt government and greedy companies

Years ago I worked for Paperchase on a temp contract, in East Central London. We were always understaffed, and the store had more customers than we could handle at times, especially at Xmas. I once saw a roughsleeper walk in and steal a £25 flask off the shelf, then leave. I couldn't challenge him because I was the only one on the shop floor, the queue was long, the phones were ringing, and the supervisors were on lunch break (and they couldn't hear the phone -_-). I thought to myself, I'm not paid enough, nor am I trained to deal with shoplifters, so I had to ignore him.

It’s is terrible that this happening however I do feel that prices in these community stores are extremely high in comparison to the high street names . I do feel that if you are truly a community store you would be supporting the local people with affordable shopping . I’m not making an excuse for the actions for the minority to carry out such actions .These stores are usually in areas where the local community are on a minimum wage or benefits .The reply I got once was ,we are a connivence store where I replied it’s not convenient to be over charged .Back in the 70s 80s these were the backbone of Britain supporting the local communities with affordable prices and of course they had Green shield Stamps to encourage everyone to come back , they have basic stocks so people have no option to buy at the stated prices , they also have a captive audience with regard to AOP’s , disabled people , unemployed who have no choice to shop in their stores at inflated prices . I only use these stores if I’ve forgotten to buy an item also where at a lower price , it’s the same item and brand but at a much higher price .CO OP are not the only company to diversify into the community/convenience market as they have seen the opportunity to make excess profits , until they start to respond to the actual community needs with regard to price margins these incidents sadly will continue .

Unfortunately, retail theft is not consequence-free, whatever the ethics of stealing. What is happening in the US is that retailers are simply shuttering stores, leaving neighborhoods without decent, affordable shops. This what happens when you cut Police and Justice staff numbers.

Why doesn't he get a few security guards then? Those aisles of his look quite isolated and there are obvious structural problems with the store. Part of it is bad floor management. Putting a 17 year old on your self scans with no communication / experience etc. No doubt his staff couldn't spot a shoplifter to save their lives because he doesn't train them. Also has probably cut staff to save his store profit. It is also a societal problem as our government has been making very bad economic decisions. It is also a policing problem as the support isn't there. He won't employ security because he is thinking of his profit.

To say shoplifting is by drug addicts is discrimination because that is not always the case…..shoplifting lifting goes back centuries…people in market places all over the world have experienced it….why do you think some people where put in “Stocks” back in the day….it was designed to name and shame the person…maybe it’s time to bring back “Name and Shame” by showing who they are publicly in shop windows etc when they get caught…. shopping online may help but if you’re things are left unattended when delivered you risk pouch pirates taking your good too.

I used to work in Tesco here in the U.K. for 17 years before Covid (out of a total of 30 years in supermarket retailing in both Ireland and the U.K.) and shoplifting in the last 10 years of my time in Tesco was very bad in my time at my former U.K. store and very few of these shoplifting incidents involved the use of the levels of violence that we have seen since Covid and I’m hearing about similar happening back home in Ireland as well - I’m totally horrified by what has been happening since Covid and it seems that the only way to put an end to this happening is to deploy armed police officers and Millitary to patrol up and down supermarket aisles to protect staff from these attacks as the Gardai (police) have done in Ireland since Covid in response to these attacks in some Irish stores - there is an element of organised attacks designed to put some supermarkets out of business and it is deliberate - I was only just chatting about these issues to supermarket staff at a store where I shop in my local area and they feel that having armed police and soldiers patrolling supermarket aisles is the only thing that would make them feel safer

I saw the co-op prices today £3.80 for a halloumi wrap and £1.75 for a bottle of squash I quickly left the store. How can they justify prices like that!

My dad during the second World War stole 2 Oranges to take to his mum and was caught. He worked a whole month to pay back for them and had a criminal record. When He got his Taxi licence in the 60s It was taken away the criminal record. Of course he never stole again. Today you kill someone and nobody does anything. More disapline is needed otherwise It will only get worse.
