I miss my brother Dave so much already. I was after Dave to widen up the Cleaver to a bigger cut and the Tanto tip. Dave was working on this head, with no Tanto, and actually Jesse wanted to reintroduce a "Croc" head as the original Crimson Talons under Scott Mackie from Spintite had. So this is really Jesse's inspiration to Dave like an heirloom he's handed down to Jesse as far as I could tell from chatting with Dave. I told Dave Tanto it. LOL,,,but he wanted a diverse array so everyone could get something they liked. That was Dave. Always trying to reach out to all the bow hunters. I'm going to hunt with the Croc this year instead of the Cleaver,my baby doll in remembrance of a super loving great kind God fearing man Dave Bittle. I miss talking equipment and performance with him. Great job as per the norm John. This one touched me hard. We lost a great man.

What a great comment, Mike. Thank you for sharing about that. Dave actually finished this head before he passed away. He asked me to test it and that if it did not go well to not make a video about it. He didn’t want Jessie to have to deal with a bunch of customer complaints right after he died and handed the company over to him. Thankfully, the head tested quite well. No surprise there. What an amazing gift to give your son.

Shot 2 deer with the 150gr croc and they performed incredibly. Both extreme angles, one a frontal and the other a severe quartering away. Complete penetration with both deer only going about 35-40 yds, great heads and cheap compared to other heads.thanks once again John and I'll say a prayer for Dave.

Dave and I have been corresponding for a few years now. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I have been shooting his broad heads since 2019 and can't say a bad thing about them. I started with the hyper speeds,then the cleaver and as of last year the crocs. They are amazing broad heads and simply the best band for your hard earned dollar. Hi I am one your fan from Italy i really enjoy your videos! Sorry for my English but i want ask you one question: when the arrow is flying turn on itself, so this phenomenon have some effects using broad heads in hunting? …. or the turning speed is treasurable compared with the arrow velocity? Many thanks for your answer!🎉
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 ай бұрын
Thank you! The vanes or fletching causes the arrow to spin, and that stabilizes the flight, keeping it on course. The more you attach the vanes at an angle, or offset, the faster they will rotate.

I love you chanel, I feel if you used meat and bones to test your broadheads, it would reflect more realistic data. Hunters dont shoot into MDF or steel or Concrete. If you could use more realistic mediums to test the broadheads, we could see how they truely perform. thanks for such great work. Regards Merrik
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 ай бұрын
Thanks Merrik. I appreciate the comment and agree to a point. Of course we don’t hunt MDF, Steel, etc. But the advantages of those mediums is they are uniform; consistent. So we can readily compare how one Broadhead is affected by them with another and how it is affected by them. The problem with bones is that they are not uniform. The angle of impact or the geometry of the bone or the density of a certain bone will all very greatly in any testing. So it is impossible to make, specific conclusions about one broadhead performance compared to another. On top of that, there is no way I could get enough animal parts to test 70 broadheads per year. However, I do shoot as many animals as I possibly can in a year. It’s usually about 10 or 12. And I use as many different broadheads on those hunts as I can, to see how they perform in a hunting situation. That being said, if a broadhead performs well on MDF, steel, and concrete, it has a much greater likelihood of performing well on an animal.
@georgewashington16213 ай бұрын
@@LuskArcheryAdventures John, as a middle ground i think it would be helpful if you tell about your hunting experiences with the broadheads you test, when there is such, in the video. I often read most or all of the comments under your videos and sometimes you mention briefly how they performed for you in real world conditions when you shot animals with it. It would be great to include this information in the video as not everyone goes through most of the comments and replies. I remember you did tell about some of your experiences in the videos themselves, and of course there are your videos of the hunts themselves, but as i understand neither cover all of your hunting experiences with some of the broadheads that you test, so i think everyone would love if you include any such experience you have in the review video, maybe in the end after all the testing so that it doesnt affect people's perception of the testing beforehand, and with a disclaimer that it is your subjective experience and it might not reflect what other people will experience, but i am sure this will be a great addition to your videos! And as always, thank you for your great videos and the time and effort you dedicate to the cause!

@LuskArcheryAdventures3 ай бұрын
I prefer the wider cut of the 125 grain. But the 100 grain is very good as well.
@bowdude333 ай бұрын
I have both because this super short single bevel with no tanto tip is my favorite design! I can say the croc’s are definitely sharper and a higher quality steel (harder and more impact resistant + better edge retention). I’m going to use them over the a2 but the a2’s are badass and much shorter so they’ll fly great. Can’t go wrong with either but the Crocs will be in my quiver this fall for a Colorado Muley Buck
@anthonyalvarado8372 ай бұрын
How would you compare these to the TOTA single bevel?

This has a much wider cut. So it depends on what you’re hunting and what you’re wanting the Broadhead to do.

04:10 "One and a quarter inches wide by 1 inch long... ... should aid in penetration." I'm assuming you are referring to the surface area of a low profile head like this when you say it will aid in penetration. Because actually, the shape of that head puts it at a mechanical DISADVANTAGE. That's a ratio of 0.80:1.00. (1/1.25 = 0.80) That's a pretty inefficient angle for promoting penetration. Think about a wheel chair ramp. They generally are 3 + times longer than they are tall. Sure, the low surface area of the broadhead will improve flight and reduce friction through any media it is shot through. But the cutting angle of that broadhead is closer to a "chop" than a "slice". Everything in nature that is meant for puncturing from porcupine quills, sting/manta ray barbs, predator fangs etc are always at a mechanical advantage with a longer-than-wide profile. Even the indigenous peoples of the entire planet that hunted with spears or bows understood this hundreds and thousands of years ago. All of the broadheads or points (which are responsible for the actual killing of the intended animal) from arrows, to bows, and knives are fashioned with mechanical advantage in mind. I'll watch the rest of the video now. My bet on this broadhead is that it will be incredibly durable, fly relatively well, and have roughly the same penetration (within an inch) of every other broadhead in gel... simply because gel is meant to stop projectiles, and it does its job really well. I do really like it's simplicity, though.
@bowdude333 ай бұрын
John goes over this in multiple videos but it doesn’t work that way on animals. More surface area equals more friction and drag slowing down overall penetration.
@PersonalBestOutdoors3 ай бұрын
@beau7278 yeah. You basically repeated almost verbatim what I said above. The only thing about that head that aids in penetration is its small surface area. You are correct. Gel IS NOT a good test media for measuring penetration. The best media would be actual live (or recently decreased animals shot before rigor mortis sets in) animals (which are also not uniform, and testing on them would require dozens of shots before getting the fairest results). But before I get into this comment deeper, I would like to say that I enjoy John's videos. There are some real merits to his testing. Flight forgiveness, edge retention, and hard impact resistance. I understand that ballistic gel is the fairest media for equal and impartial video testing. I understand that a person cannot just go and shoot unlimited numbers of large game animals (except for hogs in Texas) and even measuring penetration on them would be difficult as the correct shot would ruin the results because you want to stop the arrow in the target to measure penetration. Ballistic gel is meant to stop the projectiles fired into it... and as I said above, it does its job well. Almost all of the broadheads tested penetrate the same depth into the gel. NOT EVERY BROADHEAD and not EXACTLY THE SAME DEPTH, but a majority of them do, and within an inch or two of all the others. One must ask themselves why? Gel is consistent. It was designed to rapidly reduce momentum so fragmentation could be analyzed. On top of that, the friction created by the Gel as it contracts around the projectile being fired through it affects overall penetration. If you shoot it under a high-speed camera, you will see the gel violently shaking and convulsing. This robs the projectile of its momentum by serving as an energy dump. Finally, there is no form of lubricant on the projectile (blood) as it passes into or through. Don't believe this affects penetration? Ask John how difficult it is to remove an arrow from ballistic gel. Many people will use an air hose to force air into the hole, which releases the friction and surface layer tension on the arrow. Another mark against Gel is that every time you put a hole in it, you have weakened it. Because it is cut or has a hole in it, it now has less ability to resist the next projectile. By the same token, if you leave the previous arrow in it, the Gel will actually resist the next arrow MORE because it is being forced tighter by the object. It behaves similarly to our very own foam targets we shoot regularly. When the target is new, it stops arrows quickly. After you've put holes in it for a few weeks, months, or years, it drastically becomes less effective at stopping the projectile. Body cavities are layers. Hair covered in dirt, skin, a small layer of meat, bones, then pretty much a large section of sacks filled with liquid and air. Then, back to bone, meat, skin, and more dirt covered hair. On top of that, one the arrow has penetrated the skin, and until it leaves the opposite side skin layer; it is being lubricated by blood. So... one must now use physics to quantify penetration. Mechanical advantage, edge sharpness, mass, efficiency, surface area tension etc. Mechanical advantage is a longer-than-wide cutting tool. Edge sharpness UPON IMPACT and edge retention WHILE GOING THROUGH an animal promotes penetration by reducing friction by severing tissue efficiently. Mass is the overall arrow weight (very loosely defined) "an object in motion tends to stay in motion". Roll a wheelbarrow tire 200mph down a hill. I bet it will dent a bumper of a car. Roll a tractor tire 70mph down a hill. I bet you the car it hits will be totaled. Efficiency... the arrow must follow the broadhead. If your arrow enters the target slightly sideways, you've just lost a ton of potential for penetration. Surface area tension. The more surface area present on a broadhead the higher potential it has for drag. Kind of a no-brainer.
@bowdude333 ай бұрын
@@PersonalBestOutdoors so if more surface area means less penetration then why would you want that
@PersonalBestOutdoors3 ай бұрын
@beau7278 surface area is a very small piece of the pie, man. A broadhead 3 inches long by 1 inch wide has a lot of surface area than a broadhead 1 inch long and 1.25 inches wide... We can agree there. But it also has excellent mechanical advantage. Far greater than the smaller broadhead. 3:1 vs. 0.80:1. All else being equal, sharpness, edge retention through media, same arrow weight, perfect arrow flight etc the 3 inch long broadhead WILL OUTPERFORM the croc featured in this video.
@LuskArcheryAdventures3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I know this is a hotly debated topic. We’re definitely not talking about wheelchair ramps nor are we talking about wedges at all. We are talking about cutting tissue, not prying it apart. The geometry of a broadhead affects penetration differently in different mediums. In some mediums, the longer narrower Broadheads that have more surface area, actually create more surface friction that can hinder penetration, as compared to a shorter head with less surface area. In other medium, the opposite is true. The challenge with animals is they have both. It all depends on where you hit. I do give a bonus for the penetration of longer narrower heads because I recognize they do not penetrate in cardboard and ballistic gel in the same way they would in an animal. That being said, the opposite can also be true. A shorter single bevel head will breach bone more effectively than a longer narrower one, as it generates greater torque and pop the bone apart, allowing the shaft to glide through.
