As someone who is currently running a NSFW campaign, having every sexual encounter be consensual out of game is like the entire point of the campaign. I rule that everyone out of game must be comfortable with what's happening even if their characters aren't participating in-game.

The second story is absolutely insane. Not only depriving the character of her agency but doing such sick stuff without asking for the player's consent... Playing one more game with such a DM seems like Stockholm syndrome.

With regards to trauma dumping to the dnd group: I actually found myself in a situation like this once where most of the group was chill. Sometimes, talk got heavy, but that was rare. However, one player who joined would make her troubles everyone else's problem to solve. We wanted to support and help her, but it came to light that she was trying to tear us away from eachother when we didn't give her what she wanted. In the 3-4 months she was around, she built so much resentment in the people around her that the friend group was irrevocably changed. I don't want to go too deep into it, just be careful out there. Not everyone is equipped to help, even if they are willing to listen. You don't need to be your friends' therapist, and they don't need to be yours.

Honestly, most of the situations are bad but the Chuck story really made me sick. I am very much into NSFW campaigns, brutal ones too, but all of that with a trusted DM with whom we discussed limits and consult more triggering scenarios. This felt violating and I don't think if this happened to me at the beginning of my trpgs adventure I would continue playing DnD.

ok, this last story... this hits close to home for me... I had a friend from Russia who constantly told me how horrible they were, that they didn't deserve my friendship, that they should die, that no one would care If they died, it got to the point where it made me very uncomfortable, I hardly slept because I worried about them, and worse, several anonymous messages were sent on my tumblr blogs saying that I should hate them, and that they they were horrible and deserved to die and stuff like that. They also said every time they lost their friendship with someone that they hated them(the friend) and only wanted bad things for them. I started to realize that none of that was healthy, and I realized that the anonymous messages were from them, and they confirmed it! I cut off contact with them and asked them to get help (they didn't do that) as this was not an ok behavior and I was becoming uncomfortable with it. I ended up blocking them on all my social networks, and even on my Wattpad(I blocked them months ago, this was more recent!), like, they literally said they were searching for me there and that made me even more uncomfortable! I asked them to leave me alone but they just ignored that and continued stalking me. So when you read this story, I was able to relate with OP, because this situation is very similar to mine... and it's not even related to D&D!

I've almost never seen any game in which r-word on characters is okay. And assuming it is, there would still have to be OOC consent. You just don't freaking do this. No game I'm in allows that, even though we do allow some fade-to-black romance. And we also all have an agreement that anyone who becomes uncomfortable in the game for any reason can step out, no questions asked. Or ask for a pause. A lot of us deal with neurodivergency, with mental health struggles, etc, and we're here for each other first. The games are meant to be fun. If someone is not having fun, we need to figure it out and make sure they're okay.

I don’t really understand what makes people feel so comfortable expressing their.. “Non-Consensual” kinks in front of your acquaintances.

I have a horror story, but it's pretty short. But to preface, our prior to this, we played various series of what one could consider one shots with cringey activity. With that being said, basically, my friends and I in middle school tried our best attempts at playing a campaign of dungeons and dragons. However. Our usual DM decided to be a play as a player, and a player became the DM. However, our former DM decided to play a zombie, and uh...well, the zombie was extremly murder happy, to the point where they killed an old man NPC and then later killed a little girl NPC to steal her hair and wear it for themself. Later on, the really gross situation happened where the former DM said that their zombie started having...uh...maggots the size of human babies come from the zombie's genitals. That had human faces and looked like the zombie. Like I said, this was back in middle school, and mostly two of the players there (me and one other person) had a stronger, more adverse reaction to the comment. We, being in middle school, decided to eventually dump the zombie into a river where we left him until the end of the session when we fought a baby white dragon and had to get the zombie in order to actually have a fair encounter. But yeah, I'm glad none of us are like how we were in middle school anymore, but it's safe to say that the session was a bit more lively than any of our other ones.

Some day I'll write down my DSA-Horror-Story, but for now: During my teen and early adult years I was pretty active in written RPGs, especially some in the Harry Potter universe that worked via chat. Two groups started out really great. First year or two we got more members, made it quite far into the story and put a lot of effort into creating classes and small events. Then some of our admins got on a power trip -.- They formed two fractions and pitted members against each other. In the end the RPG died. We never managed to build a similar one and with conflicting schedules after school all the rpgs died down soon.

When some god complex DM starts insulting my significant other and calling her names, that would be an easy flat hand to right cheek moment on my end.

The second one with the former prostitute character. I've recently played a paladin whose background was "Courtesan of Sharess" because I was interested in exploring the idea of how someone like me (ace) would interact with a religion that was very much associated with sex. However. In my case, I've played with this group for 10 years prior. And we're all into the idea of sexual positivity... plus we're mostly in the demi to ace range somewhere. There was some roleplay bits dealing with this, but no actual sex was shown on screen and treated with respect. Sadly, that campaign ended when one of the players died unexpectedly (complications for a health issue some time back, nothing violent). We wrapped up the adventure (Hoard of the Dragon Queen) and tabled the characters for some other time later on.

Probably not literally but the story is remarkably similar to my own experiences with someone self deprecating and compliment fishing in a role play server I modded and when confronted about his behavior later turning out to have been behind the random “people” attempting to raid our tiny ass private server. He was both trying to mess with mods& owner for reprimanding him for his trauma dumping, and it trying to make himself look cool by taunting the “raider” with cringy insults and lines

i think the note about discord servers/moderating is a good one. it's so normalized today to be a part of or moderating for a server or it's often expected of creators to have a community server that i think it's important to realize that it's a very big task to moderate groups of people and it's not for everyone, especially younger people. that kind of experience certainly isn't anything new to discord either, as i've had similar experiences on forum sites back in my teenage years but with the accessibility of social platforms now, i feel it's been amplified and i've even seen business or companies using kids and teens as their mods for their servers which should.. never be a thing (granted, not GOOD businesses or companies cos this is a very irresponsible thing to do). i also will say, i get that person saying they refuse to mod for big groups anymore etc bc i, personally, have not really had the best experiences on discord/in servers, having things started in the best intentions and gone sour, to the point i kind of avoid them now which sucks cos i'm forever looking for cozy community somewhere and have yet to find that since my days as a young forum poster.

There are very rare situations when it is OK to take away player agency. For example, "Your player has recently been infected with lycanthropy, it's a full moon, and you're feral. Hand me your character sheet, until sunrise." Or "Your player has been possessed by X, and now X is controlling your character." For even MORE fun, you tell them that in private, and you give them little notes of what they need to do, all while the rest of the party is COMPLETELY CLUELESS, and wondering why the PC they know and love is acting like such a weirdo. Ummmm, let's see. What other situation would it be OK to take away player agency? Ummm.... Yeah, I'm stumped. I don't know, maybe for a VERY SPECIFIC and SHORT cinematic cutscene? But it would still need to MAKE SENSE. Actually, I did have some of the PC's be infected with "Donkey Brains," which means that, at random times, they will basically lose their minds, and become like donkeys, following the basic commands of their master, whoever happens to be randomly assigned as the one they recognize as their master, for that time. It has led to some funny incidents, like the time the prankster cleric ordered her "donkey" to use all the pots and pans as "armor," for an hour. But, it was just silly fun, and I NEVER give them Donkey Brains in a combat situation. I'm not that cruel. Although, if they should be already having Donkey Brains, and then get into combat, their master could use a bonus action to give them orders, such as "Hit that!" or "cast X spell!" Also, I gave them some amulets to ameliorate the situation, so they don't have it happen nearly as often. It's still fun, and adds spice. But when it comes up, *I* am not the one controlling their characters. It's the other players, and they all know, "It could happen to me at any time, so I need to be kind, or I'll face pay-back." But the way that DM was doing it? NO. Just NO.

Mini horror story! I had joined a campaign run by a friend of mine with several people I knew but hadn't played with yet. One player threw me for a loop in the first session. They, a young character, upon meeting my graying, older character, decided awkward flirting was the best option. We hadn't discussed anything like that in our session zero, so I wasn't prepared in the slightest, and just ignored the comment and turned to the npc we were talking to to get our quest. Their character turned into a "flirt with anything that moves" type in the first session. I'm very aro-ace, which they very much knew, and while we'd never played together and likely wasn't aware that I don't play out relationships because I get supremely awkward, it was still unexpected, especially coming from someone else who's also ace! I left the campaign after session 1 because of a conflict with that player outside of game that I couldn't set aside to play together, and I didn't want to ruin it for my other friends. There were other things about that player that made leaving the campaign a decision I'm happy about in the end, though I am sad to have to shelve that character for now. Still, no D&D is better than bad D&D!

The Ahbed one reminds me of my ex gf. 💀 Grew up together, so it wasn't a "I dated someone I met online and they were nuts" case, either, lol. We loved to do text based roleplaying around highschool. She had 3, 4 or more side accounts posing as her "friends" or her "friends' 'friends'" to spy on me.. Gave them names, nationalities, families, background stories and everything. Stole people's photos online claiming they were said friends, too. She'd use these accounts for anything from trying to creep on what I was doing/who I was chatting with asides her to manipulating/pressuring me about our roleplay sessions (trying to derail my characters' arcs, complaining about how I need to post more, hijacking the entire game to revolve around her ideas, etc.). Shit was wild.

Nobody will play with me for free, so if I charge money for the privilege of playing with me, they'll not only be more willing to play with me, but will submit to my commands and bow to my rule, recognizing my rights and authority to choose EVERY ACTION involved in the game! I hate this sort of shit we had in the second sotry, like even if you are fine with having dark things happen in your game, springing this kind of shit on a player without consent or way out is just really disrespectful. Forcing your players characters to be something they don't want is a great way to dissociate them from their character and make them lose interest in your campaign. Even when I just had a slight backstory change, (it was agreed, that the DM would alter our backstories, and we would discover it during the game). It took me a few sessions, to get into the roleplay with this character again, because it was far from what I had originally in mind for him. Campaign's great, tho. But for OPs case, even if I was fine with the word I won't say, because I want my comment to not be removed by YT, I would have gotten up and left if a DM did that shit to me mid campaign.

The intro story, I dont think it's that weird or bad to marry someone you're dating in every game you play together? It sounds like the problem was just that they would quit after that and not actually get into the game and get invested in it the same way as their partner did and wanted both of them to do. Also, wouldn't you still feel weird if you significant other married someone else in a game? Especially if you don't know the other person or what their relationship is.
