We will find the critical angle and refractive index of a perspex block by using a ray box and a protractor.
When the angle of incidence is smaller than the critical angle, the ray is refracted.
When the angle of incidence is larger than the critical angle, the ray goes through total internal reflection.
When the angle of incidence is equal to the critical angle, the ray travels along the boundary of the prism. This is the angle of incidence that we want to note down.
To find the refractive index, you need to do 1/sin(C).

Great work, but I have a question, should the critical angle occurs when the reflected light beam is travelling through the boundary and in 90 degrees with the normal, in the amazing video I have noticed 43 degrees was still has some refracted light? Thank you for the great job, keep it up.

You're right, when angle of incidence is equal to the critical angle the ray travels along the boundary. This is called grazing. But it's so difficult to tell exactly what this point is. You'll often find that, in this experiment' you will see the ray 'jump' from refraction to total internal reflection because it's hard to get the incident angle exactly equal to the critical angle.

Great work but i thought in order to find the critical angle, the ray must be refracted at a 90 degree...Can you please explain why it has to reflect internally rather.

You're right, the critical angle is the angle of incidence for a 90 degree refraction... this is also known as grazing... as the ray travels along the boundary. It is only when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle that the ray undergoes total internal reflection. In an experiment to find the critical angle, it is often quite difficult to angle the beam so that it is exactly the critical angle. You will often find it easier to angle the beam to achieve total internal reflection rather than grazing. So in the video, I was trying to find the angle just before it 'jumps' to total internal reflection.

I tried filming using the ray box's beam... it didn't show on camera as it was too faint... and it didn't work filming in the dark too. So I had to resort to photoshop! 😆

I'm so annoyed that they didn't demonstrate the critical angle or total internal reflection with the experiment; all that set up for nothing!

Sorry that I couldn’t capture the critical angle on camera. I had to turn the light off to see the grazing effect… but when I did that, the room was too dark to film. I’ll try it again next time and see if I can film it properly. :)
