The amount of work and attention to detail that making a Cuban chain like this is absurd, as you'll see on the video.
Here are the main steps to making the chain:
00:00 Mixing gold with other metals to make 14K gold.
00:22 Melting gold with torch and pouring into ingot mold to make bar.
01:17 Scanning bar with XRF Analyzer to show gold alloy details.
01:31 Stretching gold bar to form wire (includes annealing).
02:45 Forming and cutting the links for the chain.
04:09 Connecting and soldering links.
05:30 Twisting chain to align links.
07:18 Filing the links to give chain the characteristic flat look.
09:05 Polishing chain.
10:01 Attaching and welding last link of Cuban chain.
11:06 Final chain weigh in (approximately 1000 grams of 14K gold).
12:07 Finished chain!

For some reason, whenever I’ve seen chains before I’ve always just thought of them as being made mostly by machines, but after watching this I really appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship, and just how human this process really is. The jewelry and expensive clothes have never been my cup of tea, but from now on I was take time to appreciate the craftsmanship of these fine pieces.

This took me back to my preteen yrs. My father made me go to work every summer vacation at his shop back in the 70s. Taught me all these techniques. Hated it so much I still won’t wear jewelry to this day. But I am grateful fir it. Taught me how to work!!! And saved enough to buy myself a motorcycle.

Thanks Anthony. I like the continuous non lock design as well for long enough chains, but everyone is different. Some clients prefer the lock though, like the one who bought this Cuban chain.

What scares me the most is this is the level of craftsmanship to just make the chain. I can’t even imagine the level of patience and dedication it takes to get that chain covered in diamonds as I’m assuming someone would need to place each and every diamond on it.

first time seeing a chain w/o a lock ! I've wondered since a few years if that was possible, because it looks extremely good ! and it's even more sturdy.

Definitely. We make them both with and without locks. Personally, I like Cuban chains without locks better 🤷♂️

Ha Ha, frying them golden eggs. All kidding aside, that white powdery substance added to the pan with the links is Borax. Borax helps the solder to flow better when the gold links are welded together.

This has got to be one of those rare cases when then cost of the gold is more than the labor. That is one heavy chain. Nice work fellas.

Yes, the cost of the gold is the biggest part of the total cost. It's always like this unless a vendor rips you off with the price.

I grew up in Brooklyn and always got my jewelry from some very respected jewelers on Canal St.. Fernando's jewelers on 70 Bowery was where I got my piece made, a 14k cooking spatula patterned after a real spatula I gave the jeweler to make for me.. It came out gorgeous 3 in long and 35 dwt or 55 grams and had paid $600 back then.. I always respected the talent of jewelry craftsman!
