This is a "how to" video on my crochet hooks modifications.
how I add pencil foam grips to make the hard crochet hooks soft and easy on the hands.
also a small nod at masking tape, which I have used for years.
The hook gauge I was talking about is for crochet hooks. The ones in the video are for knitting needles. I have yet to buy the crochet hook gauge, so I could not demonstrate it.

Thank you! You gave me an idea to help with my hooks. I too like the cheap metal hooks and I have some tiny 1.X mm hooks that hurt my thumb after a while of using them and i couldn't find any grips for them. Pencil grips are too big as you said but i never thought of wrapping them with tape to get them to fit a hook. I'll be using this technique now. No more thumb pain. Thanks 🙏🏾

I was thinking about trying insulation tubing for the very thin hooks, but never got around to buying some. It can have a small center hole.(it depends on the product.) And the insulation part is fat if that is the choice made. The trick is working out the MM of the center hole needed. Then it is easy enough to order online. At at least than a pound for a meter, a bargain.

I think Amazon has crochet hook grips. I had some years ago that I bought from a craft store but then couldn't find them anymore. Pencil grips are the same. Never thought of masking tape for the smaller hooks. Great tips. Thanks.

I agree with you in so many ways. I insert my steel needles inside a ballpoint pen case. First of all I think they are too short so the pen lengthens it and the pen makes the thin hook easier to hold. I’ve been using foam pencil grips for a long time. I also dislike plastic hooks or needles. I love the aluminum hooks. I covered some hooks with Fimo clay. The clay falls apart when I use the hook it is probably because of my mistake in baking them improperly. I found barber comb sterilizer bottles at the thrift store that I put my hooks in.

I also tried Fimo. My first baked session went well. I used them for a few months but found it was still to hard. I tried making more, changing the thickness, but something went wrong and they fell apart. I didn't knead it for as long. Also, the first time, I used a wooden board and kneaded on that. The second time, I rolled it on a ceramic top. Maybe the Fimo needed warming up (hands and kneading) before? But, It was after that I thought of foam and started searching for an answer.

I have no idea what barber comb steriliser bottles are... but... will get onto Google right now to find out. I collect everything from listerine to orange juice bottles for my collection of buttons and bits and bobs. 😃

Color code the sizes. They also have clear grips.

You can also look up Blue Saturn design they use polymers clay for the skinny hooks that way you can in scrib the size of the hook into the clay before it drys

Hi. At the time I was in the UK and purchased most things off Ebay. I cannot remember where or when I bought that specific needle gauge.

I’m not crazy about those ergonomic crochet hooks , bcoz when I’m crocheting hats & you have to do popcorn or pour stitches the shafts are so short ! I go back to my inexpensive hooks , they can do the job anytime !

I agree. I also do not like a shaft that is not straight. Some have bends and others get fatter and fatter. This distorts the stitch width.

I saw a lady wrapping her hooks with tape then she uses the plastic pencil grips , with her hairdryer on very hot she shrinks the grip then she forms it to her hand ! Do you understand?
